This is the future. We have already seen it in movies that are based in the future. Homes will be fully voice automated with cameras everywhere to help with automation. Not worried.

And people choosing to live analog, will be hunted down and killed, with the excuse that if you are not with us you are against us, a saying that have rung from so many lips already thru history.

At this point if you have a "smart devices / smart home" I'm convinced you are monumentally stupid. To a degree I almost find it comical - they actually get people to pay to be spied on. Not trying to be insensitive but it's like 1984, except everyone isn't brainwashed, they're retarded.

This coupled with the Facebook patent mentioned in an earlier post pretty well declare that any concern either FB or Google express about your privacy is a lie.

Do you carry your smart phone into your house?

Don't own a smartphone. Flip phone stays off most of the time. Have so far managed to avoid infesting the home with any 'Smart' devices, but it is getting harder to avoid. Cars old enough to not have any always connected features.

Make sure you have a fortified bunker backed up by lots of guns and ammos. When I read comments like this, it really helps me understand why one of our parties choose paranoia as the battlecry. It is ingrained and passed on generation by generation. What a sorry attitude to have.

1984 again? What a cliched and overused, outdated neanderthal phrase. Once again: paranoia.

No smartphone so don't have to worry about that.

No wonder the "building off the grid" trend is growing so fast. Maybe some are taking it serious and doing something about it, though it is still only a few.

An executive in his office whispers to a Google device at his home via his smart watch: "Is my wife with someone?"

His wife heard that via Alexa.

We know what happens the next.....

Not sure what politics has to do with this...

Companies and the Govt. abuse information all the time. I guess the equifax, target, etc. data breeches didn't happen huh? The masses go along with this crap because they can post a picture of their f****** food or talk to their microwave. Really, it's pathetic. Sorry, but my home is private space, if some company/govt. wants to invade my private space they can go get fucked - doubly so if they think I'm going to PAY them to do so.

Maybe they also want a seat in front of a panel like what just happened to Mark Zuckerberg. lol

meh I dont mind datamining when it works properly. If the point is to make sure that ad spam is targeting me correctly then more power to them. Better than getting the same fucking chevy safety award commercial over and over everytime I turn on youtube. That said I ended up tossing my alexa's. They constantly ease drop on you and activate randomly. Big pass on home automation of that sort until they back off on this kind of intrusive stuff.

This thread reminds me of Minority Report and how much I love it. Time to go watch it again this weekend.

Do no Evil. Trust us. And you shouldn't worry if you have nothing to hide!

Now, kindly provide us with admin rights on your Win10 PC. We know what's best for you; that includes targeted ads and timely OS updates.

You should read the book instead; It's much better.

A scanner, darkly 1977.

The last page reads from today, with reference to all the people dying of opiates. :(

Thank you for suggesting it. I'll give it a read.

What we didn't know is that Dick was writing instruction manuals.

Enjoy having your life micromanaged, I can't believe you think it's ok. Do you see any drawbacks of having absolutely no privacy? I see so many It'd take hours to even begin.

Also saying it's already in movies proves that you drank their cool-aid, you think it's fine because you saw it in a fictional movie. To each his own, but I'm quite sure when you are in the world you say is fine with you, you'll wish later you had your freedom. There isn't anything control freaks and psychopaths find off limits, so good luck.

Try an adblocker when on youtube, no more commercials.

Sigh. I remember a simpler time, a time when new technology was actually a cause for celebration. We doubled the bits in your console!! Cameras are digital now muthafucka! Yeah. Now it's all surveillance and spying bullshit, or how many extra $$$ can be squeezed out of people who play whatever the fuck video games have morphed into. The future sucks.

if personal data is kept private with a few million USD in fines upon failure and leakage ( but politicians are neutered with regards to any punitive action against big tech.), then sure. Most of this can be referenced to an on-site database with regular but generic updates.

heck, this is how things are done pre-internet, with directory booklets. Heck, some company can probably make a buck these days by copying everything Google does but with a tack-on "offline as default" mode

So they're going to watch you bang your wife/gf/whatever and if you don't please her well enough according to the algorithm then you'll see ads for toys i bet.

That, or they will create a Tinder account for her and put a link on her desktop.

Well, it was always about making money, and there's nothing inherently wrong with that in an of itself. They wanted to sell you a new console with double the bits, that's how they made their money. I'm 100% for capitalism that doesn't abusively exploit the consumer. The sinister evolution is now they want to sell you things AND exploit your privacy/information for extra profit. Even ignoring the appalling invasions of privacy, they've also shown a total disregard for protecting the data they collect, sensitive or otherwise. There's no master plot against anyone (no tin-foil hats), but it's simply cheaper for them to pay out damages than to properly secure data, so for them it's just another cost cutting business decision.

The good news is you can limit your participation. I don't have facebook, twitter, etc. I don't have smart devices like microwaves, doorbells, thermostats, etc. I have a smart TV that I've restricted to be a dumb panel - it isn't hooked up to wifi and has no ethernet plugged in. You can opt out of this crap (except for a few items such as equifax, tansuinion, etc.) by simply not participating. Most people have limited resources (ie. money) to spend, if a company wants to screw me over witt data collection etc., I'll just spend my dollars elsewhere - it's really that simple.
