DAN HSLP-48: A powerful sub 50mm heatsink

Took a couple of weeks to get, but worth it.

Any chance this will compete well against an AIO 120? (I know its a silly question but I'm an ITX user with a larger case)

My mobo really could use some airflow over the VRMs but I'm not sure it's worth replacing my existing AIO if i'll just be fighting core temps instead.

If you have a larger case just get a bigger top down cooler. Like the Noctua NH-C14S. Tons of downward airflow. Massive performance. Or if you don't have that much room the NH-C12S is a good option too. This heatsink is for very small cases. I'm not saying it won't be a good heatsink but if you have the room why get something that's specially designed for small cases that might not perform as well as others?

The part number that I googled after delivery was k4a8g085wb-bcpb, but I'd want to verify it. I can't take a picture of them now, as I just put everything together last night. But the next time I take it apart I'll take a pictures. That might be soon, as I want to reverse my fan, which requires me to remove the heatsink, which will give access to the ram again.
 
This test is not good. The cooler would be testing in an open setup and it would be use only the standard fan. I think the temps in the A4 Case would be more diffirent to the Noctua L9i/a
 
So they've already send out review samples. I have hoped to test one since i've already tested the C7 + Noctua L9i. But it seems the prefer bigger websites instead of smaller forum reviews. Althoug i told the explicit that i wanted to test the cooler in the dan case... and open "bench" comparison doesnt show the full potential of the cooler.
 
Yes. We need performance reviews of the Black Ridge inside the Dan Case A4. I just ordered my Dan Case and the Black Ridge cooler so I got nothing to do but watch videos and read about them until they arrive. (hope the performance is good!)
 
Maybe the chip he tested wasn't pushing enough heat to properly show the difference between the coolers. Also he didn't test it with a Noctua fan, related to that it may be much quieter at a given fanspeed. Lastly this cooler shouldn't have any turbulence noise. Looking forward to some more reviews.

They fucked up by not sending samples to forum reviewers. That's where this community lives! A review of a SFF heatsink that's not IN a SFF case is just useless...

There is no Noctua NH-C12S, it is the Noctua NH-C12P, but that has also been discontinued. The Noctua NH-L12s is the current 120mm top/down cooler but it is super low profile and not nearly as beefy as the old NH-C12P (which also had a "SE14" version that came with a 140mm fan)

My mistake, you're right the L12s is the one I was referring to. Point still stands, don't get a super niche cooler unless you fall into that niche and need it out of necessity.
 
It seems the black ridge is in stock at some retailers in germany. just ordered one + a slim noctua 120 15mm fan and gonna test it next week.

I will test following setups:
Case with all panels installed. Aida GPU + CPU stress at the same time, to see whether the orientation of the fan has an impact on the cooling perfomance of the GPU. While testing i will record the noise of the different setups and maybe measure the noise with a sound meter. But thats just a maybe, depends whether i can borrow one from work.

  • Noctua NH-L9i with the stock 92mm blowing towards the cpu
  • Noctua NH-L9i with the stock 92mm exhausting out of the case
  • Noctua NH-L9i with the stock 92mm blowing towards the cpu with my fan duct

  • Black Ridge with stock fan blowing towards the cpu
  • Black Ridge with stock fan blowing out of the case
  • Black Ridge with Noctua 92mm fan blowing towards the cpu
  • Black Ridge with Noctua 92mm fan blowing out of the case
  • Black Ridge with Noctua 120mm fan blowing towards the cpu
  • Black Ridge with Noctua 120mm fan blowing out of the case

I wouldn't bother with this option:

It just doesn't work well as the case heats up, I've tried it with my l9a and fan duct.
 
I know it tested it. It's just to compare the gpu + case temperatures with the black ridge ;) I think the black ridge could lower the temperatures inside the case with the fan blowing out of the case

It's more important to cool the hottest components in the case then try to lower the ambient temperature. You actually get higher returns trying to cool the hottest components, because the delta between the cool air and the hottest component (the CPU) is large. while the delta between the cool air and the ambient temperature is small. Moreover, the other hottest component, the GPU is compartmentalized on the other side, lowering the ambient temp(by a tiny bit) on the CPU side doesn't help with anything.

Can you also add a test with a bottom 92mm fan and a 120mm top fan blowing towards the cpu AND the same test but with both fans blowing away from the case? The Louqe Ghost S1 allows for the dual fan configuration (at least with a 15mm fan on top) and so I'd like to know how it performs and compare it to a NH-L12 that's been modded to fit a single 12mm fan the bottom.
 
Probably not. Since i havethe asus vii impact there is no space under the mainboard and on top the riser cable blocks any installation of another fan.

Installed the noctua NH-L9i fan on the black ridge in the "stock fan orientation" blowing out of the case. So far the temps are pretty much the same as with the Noctua NH-L9i blowing in without installed fan duct.

Build quality isnt that awesome, since i had to bend the heatpipes a bit to get it installed. Seems the QC isnt that good at the moment. The highest spot of the cooler was 56,5mm before bending it.

Edit:
The temperatures in the case dropped about 10°C tho with the fan blowing out. GPU, SSD and mainboard temps sensors read 10°C lower values

Yea but a little bit of bending did the trick. I will post pictures etc as soon as I am finished testing. Turning the fan around (blowing direction cpu) improves the performance. Funny that they install the stock fan in a way, that the cooler performance worse...

In my opinion it isnt worth going for a 120m fan since u need an extra fan and VLP ram. For example the Noctua A12x15 @ 900rpm has the same perfomance as the noctua A9x14 @ 1300 rpm. If u go higher then 1100-1200 rpm the A12x15 gets much more noisier then the A9x14 @ 1500-1600.

The difference between a NH-L9i and the Black Ridge are about 7-8°C at the same fan speed.

I'm struggling to justify purchasing this to replace my l9a with custom shroud. That said, 7-8° is pretty good but that's compared to an l9i without a shroud? It looks damn slick though, thanks for the benchmarks, good work!
 
No I didn't use the fan duct for the test. I probably won't test the stock fun. It will perform pretty much the same maybe a little bit noisier
 
So judging by how it compares to the nh-l9i, this is looking like it will perform almost identical to my LP53 with nf-a9x14? Am I interpreting this correctly?
 
CPU Temp wise a NH-L9i with a fan duct perfomance similiar.

But the overall temps in the case of other components like SSD (mounted at the lowest position under the PSU), mainboard, GPU are several degrees lower (as shown in the diagrams).
