AAA Says Driver Assist Systems Are Deceptively Unreliable

"Self driving" tech is all the rage, but a new report by AAA says that consumers should be more cautious. AP says testing done by the company shows that "electronic driver assist systems on the road today may not keep vehicles in their lanes or spot stationary objects in time to avoid a crash." In spite of this, many diving automation systems use the word "pilot" and other terms that make some drivers believe the cars can drive themselves. Responding to the report, auto manufacturers stress that those systems are supposed to be assistive, but AAA seems to think the message isn't clear enough.

The auto club tested the systems on four vehicles that had adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist and automatic emergency braking. Vehicles tested included the 2018 Mercedes-Benz S Class, the 2018 Nissan Rogue, a 2017 Tesla Model S and a 2019 Volvo XC40. In addition to Tesla's Autopilot, Volvo calls its system "Pilot Assist," while Nissan's is named "ProPilot Assist"... AAA says the vehicles drifted out of lanes and hugged lane markers, struggling with moderate traffic, curved roads and streets with busy intersections. Three of the four would have failed to avoid a crash when the vehicle ahead of them changed lanes and a simulated stopped vehicle was ahead. "As a result we had to take evasive action," said Brannon. Only the Tesla system brought the vehicle to a complete stop in all five track test runs, but driver intervention was needed for the others, the AAA report said.

and people thought these big name companies could out do what Tesla's been doing for years... either way i'm not that surprised, i tried the nissan one in the rogue for shits and giggles i'm pretty sure a blind folded drunk person could drive better than that.

Tell that to the families of the Tesla owners that died using their system.

Oh please. Even pilots know an auto pilot cant be left unattended and expected to complete the flight perfectly. Its a burden reliever not a do it for you solution.

The real problem is people are just stupid.

Oh please, shit happens. How many more people die from just people driving with no assistance? Answer: A lot more.

But hey, if this helps bash Tesla some I'm sure people will. God forbid a company do something new.

Can't have it both ways. Shit on the other manufacturers because their system sucks, but Tesla is given a pass for their shitty system because it's Tesla?

nope i don't give them a pass at all, the system can always be improved but when you look at the real problem in the case of people that have so far been killed/injured you can't 100% blame the system.. fault lies with everyone, driver, cities/states that don't keep up with road maintenance, shitty ass road designs.. that being said though tesla's system is miles ahead of any of the others..

Yeah, but that's the nature of the task at hand. It must accommodate those characteristics.

You say you aren't giving them a pass, but then go on to give them a pass by placing blame elsewhere.

Nice attempt at deflection.

From the linked article "Only the Tesla system brought the vehicle to a complete stop in all five track test runs, but driver intervention was needed for the others, the AAA report said." Why is the Tesla system shitty in your opinion?

Also, avoiding a stationary object after a lead car changes lanes, is basically the kobayashi maru. Most 19 year olds would fail that test.

[ edit: I read that as other cars needed driver intervention, not that the Tesla failed some other 'non test track runs' ]

My wife and I just had a conversation the other day in the car about people relying on their car's tech to drive. I watch countless people change lanes without looking just because they have blind spot detection in their mirror. Tech fails and it takes that one time you cut in front of a semi at the wrong time and get your card punched. As time progresses I feel like a minority in regards to tech running my life. Don't get me wrong, I use electronics but I like to do things myself for most tasks.

When I was young and stupid as we all are, I put complete reliance on cruise control to maintain my speed everywhere. These days I hardly use it, even on the interstate.

Tech isnt the problem here IMO. I saw people changing lanes all the time before blind spot detection was a thing. I still see it happening. Hell I see people pull out of stop signs w/out checking in either direction right into oncoming traffic. I stand firm with: People are just stupid. Ok stupid AND lazy.

That's why people need to actually drive their fucking cars or stay at home.

God forbid you under sell and over deliver rather than imply it is something it is not.

My wife got a new Subaru with what they call "eye sight". It will try to keep you in between the lines. I tried it out on a lonely part of the highway - found it weird. It seems to work.
This is obviously not for "self driving" - it's meant to get you back in your lane if you are not paying attention. It's also supposed to apply the brakes if it thinks you are going to be in a collision (have not tried :) ).
I told me wife not to try to put her makeup on while driving and rely on this. I can only hope she listens to me!

I'm currently in an Outback service loaner that has this garbage installed. It's constantly intervening when it shouldn't. When I test it, it consistently fails. I finally pulled the fuse because I'm afraid it will actually cause me to get in an accident.
