The owner of the former CItigroup tower in Long Island has announced that Amazon is moving into the 1.5 million square glass tower. Citigroup is seeking to vacate the building by 2020 and the move is considered a boon for the Savanna firm that owns the building.

"We're thrilled that Amazon selected One Court Square as a critical component of its HQ2 plans for Long Island City," said Nicholas Bienstock, a managing partner at Savanna, in prepared remarks. "It's truly a privilege for Savanna to have the opportunity to partner with Amazon in a transaction that has the potential for tremendous job creation for New York City, and we look forward to a successful execution that will bring extraordinary benefits to the neighborhood, the city and region as a whole."

If they aren't constructing a new building, then what did they need all those tax breaks for? Just waiting for all the "Elon is just a subsidy farmer" types to chime in and call Jeff a subsidy farmer too.

It is not nice to take advantage of people just cuz they are not super smart, sadly it seem like the MO for most rich people / companies.
Amazon will probably do some tax joggling and deduct every dime their headwaters cost in Denmark, and we will be happy to pay for such a poor little company.

Q: whats the best font for irony ?

Probably stuff that ends up being 0 percent interest employee home loans

A: Amazonia, of course. Or Officina Sans if you want to keep the ironing in-house.

Didn't need them but if the cities are stupid enough to shovel money into Amazon's coffers, its good corporate governance to graciously accept the legal bribes. The businesses that were already there are likely to get screwed over by this when landlords start tripling the rent because "Well Amazon is here and the property values went up."

Soon we will hear about workers demanding higher wages because the rents have gone up.

Just more reason to raise wages and link it to inflation like most modern nations have done, implement rent controls, invest heavily in affordable housing like Singapore, and get money out of politics! Bonus points for making it impossible for someone like Jeff Bezos to hoard as much wealth as he has. We need to bring back the effective maximum wage we had under FDR and Eisenhower through their taxations while using some good ole Teddy Rosevelt monopoly smashing of the modern day robber barons. It was America's golden age for a reason with our "Great Prosperity", until Reagan showed up and created today's mess.

I both live and work in long Island city and am excited for Amazon to move in. I will be applying for a job as soon as possible!

My apartment's value is gonna go sky high and that is a nice bonus. Glad I don't rent.

They are building a new headquarters. They will be hiring 1200 for the citi building, but when hq2 is finished the total employees will be 25-30000. It's something like 32000 in tax breaks for every employee hired. The tax break will be spread out over 10 years.

That prosperity was largely due to the US being one of the few countries with a infrastructure that hadn't been destroyed in the war.
We had little competition until those countries rebuilt.

Rent control always leads to less/more expensive housing, except for the fortunate few that just happed to have a place before the rent control started.
We tried investing in affordable housing, it was called the projects, and you see how badly that turned out.

Besides, the solid blue areas of California have the biggest income disparity in the country and some of the highest housing costs, and I see no real attempt to fix the problem.
Every so called solution ends up making the problems worse. Now that we are a one party state, with one party having super majorities in both houses, it will get even worse.
The real blue wave will be all the people fleeing California over the next few years, and then voting for the same type of politicians in their new states. (Sorry Texas)

It was never a bidding contest, just the ultra rich looking for more handouts. The two locations picked for Amazon headquarters miraculously happened to be the same city as Bezo's other homes. Now all 3 of Amazon HQ's are an average of 6.4 miles away from each of Bezo's homes in 3 different states.

Hah yeah right. More like ways to pad their bottom line. I highly doubt they will give a 0 percent employee home loan...
