Picked up an iP XS yesterday...

Change, why would you be getting an iPhone ?

Why not get the Pixel 3 or something vastly superior instead ?
Are you saying a Pixel 3 is vastly superior to an iPhone XR?

Lol okay. That’s enough hyperbole for one day.

If Google stops partnering with Verizon in America, I would consider it. But right now dual SIM support would help me on my overseas trips

I've been curious if you can use the eSIM on Pixels for any US carrier and then use the SIM tray for your overseas SIM(s). But in the light research I've done on it, it seems that the eSIM is only good for Project Fi service.

maybe it'll work after the carriers enable it for the iPhone. But from what I'm reading on XDA, dual SIM wouldn't be available unless Google enables it. Back to iPhone

I was using CallerApp on Android, which is amazing for blocking spam and recording calls. But on the iPhone, I'm now getting so much spam (so much political shit). I've got both Hiya and TrueCaller installed on the iPhone. Neither of them blocks anything!

might be conflicting with Apple's auto blocker, since they brought it in I haven't been getting spam messages.

You can still go in to see "blocked calls" and I had over 40! wtf?!

Laugh, the Pixel is not even superior. Probably one of the worst phones this year except for the camera. Haven't you read about all the issues it has? And 4gb of ram in 2018 on an Android is obsurd. Note 9 kicks it's behind.

I need help badly in this. I just got a frigging automated call with them using my name about helping me with student loans, and hold on the line... I HAVE NO STUDENT LOANS!!! WTF?!?

Ah yes, I just got one of those calls a couple hours ago...for the third time in the past week. All under different numbers.

I've been getting calls about alleviating my back pain with a free back brace. They all come from the same area code and prefix. The only difference is the last 4 numbers on each call.

My phone didn’t start auto blocking until I started blocking them myself. Try blocking the numbers after. I have 10 blocked voice mails too lol.

Got a call a few hours ago with some guy asking if I was [my name]. I asked him why he wants to know and to state the purpose of his call. When he wouldn't answer either question I hung up on him.

Caller's Area Code and 3 digit prefix was the same as mine. Was that the same for you?

Mine have been pre-recorded.

Yea apparently my iPhone auto blocks those calls now.

I feel like a lot of people knock iOS until they really try it. I was one of them. I like it a lot now
I tried using my younger bro's iPhone SE, now that he's moved on to an XS, to familiarize myself a bit more with iOS (not as a phone, though, my SIM's staying firmly in my Note 8).

The more I try it, the more annoyed I get by simple things like file management, gamepads that inexplicably stop responding properly (I use a MOGA ACE POWER with the SE), keyboards with missing press-and-hold functionality without jailbreak tweaks, Cydia itself needing tweaks and additional repositories just to not have broken links to tweaks and the ability to buy the paid ones, no Bluetooth mouse support (barring a select few mice made to work with remote desktop clients), the "always-open app drawer" nature of the Springboard launcher, AirDrop generally not working (why can't I just transfer the file directly the way Android and every other OS does it?), so on and so forth.

It's actually put me off greatly from getting an iPad Pro down the road, because no matter how great the Pencil experience on a thin, light, long-lasting tablet might be, the OS is holding it all back. It's making me think that I might as well take the hit in portability and battery life by going with a Surface Pro, Zbook X2 or MobileStudio Pro, because then I know it won't be the OS that can't do what I ask of it, only the hardware.

If someone spIns off Android to use memory management like iOS and Windows Phone (save states with a few categories of apps that is approved for multitasking instead of all apps multitasking), it'll be pretty close to perfect. This memory allocation issue killing the launcher or other system vital tasks is what I don't like the most about Android. Shit like TouchWiz is even worse by using so much RAM that's there's hardly any free memory left. I can't even answer phone calls on that POS GS9 because the phone app just simply don't work. An iPhone with 3GB of RAM performs better than an Android with 8GB (though a superior processor might have a lot to do with that too).
My Note 8 shrugs it off, but I suppose having 6 GB of RAM helps.

System-vital tasks should never be force-quit just because of RAM limitations, but I've seen some abysmally cheap Android tablets with just 1 GB of RAM do exactly that with Lollipop and Marshmallow. I'm talking about the Settings interface and launcher being force-closed and reloaded here, which is just plain inexcusable and would surely sour a lot of user opinions on Android in general.

iOS’ task manager is leaps and bounds better than Androids free for all approach
Except for when you want something open in the background and iOS just force-closes it on you.

Two fairly common complaints I've heard are that iOS can't do background downloads (something that's trivial on any real OS), and that it'll disconnect from remote desktop sessions where an Android device will stay connected.

There needs to be some kind of user-adjustable priority on that, sorta like prioritizing what ship subsystems you want to keep online in Elite: Dangerous when you deploy your weapon hardpoints and exceed your reactor's capacity, so you trim down the minor stuff that you wouldn't use in combat to bring your overall power usage down to what your reactor can handle.

On the other hand, that kind of flies in the face of iOS's touted simplicity, which is why I'll probably never get along with it at this rate.

iOS allows background app's to run, you have to allow it, but it will either store the app in stasis (default) or allow limited capability (to include connections) if allowed.

I've never had an issue with downloads happening in the background, this hasn't been an issue in years. Sounds like a PEBKAC issue here.

Remote desktop also works fine if not the top app for anything less than 5 minutes. If you leave a remote desktop session in the background then that's a security hazard so I'm ok with that disconnecting regardless.

You can also swap out the keyboards without a jailbreak. Lol. You have a lot to research still.

And most of these complaints are not something that 99% of people would ever care about. I'm not saying they may not be valid. I'm saying that if you have some specific needs, then an iPhone might not be for you. I'm still very happy.

One complaint I do have is the slow ass charging with the included charging cable. Not including a fast charger on a $1000+ phone is crazy.

My guess is that this won't happen until it's packing USB-C in the box, like it did with the iPad Pro. Now, whether or not it should've gone USB-C this generation is another story... I could see why, but I'm happy I didn't have to get a dongle for my 2015-era iMac just to sync and charge locally.

Yea, I wish they’d pick up the pace too.

Not that I disagree with it, but I've got them third party much higher wattage Anker chargers years ago. Since Apple isn't changing the technology like QC 1, 2, and 3, I didn't have to buy a new charger for faster charging. Heck, I've never even taken the charger out of the box. My newest Anker USB-PD 60W charger (with Apple's usb-c to lightning cable) is charging my iPhone/iPad even quicker - a charger I got to charge my tablet and my Essential Phone.

Yep, that is what I use with wireless charging. Anker products.

Hmmm, could be outdated complaints. I'll have to dive further into this. After all, complaints about not having cut/copy/paste or a file manager (even if it's a neutered one) are rather outdated at this point!

I admittedly haven't tested out remote desktop stuff yet, but that's because I wouldn't dare make myself suffer with that on an iPhone SE-sized screen. This is for the prospect of doing so through an iPad Pro. Even so, I still kinda wish it didn't require very specific Bluetooth mice, one by Citrix, another by Swiftpoint.

Oh, another thing I really need to find: a .VGM player that actually works. The only free one I found on the App Store doesn't seem to import .VGM files downloaded from ZIP archives correctly, and the rest are paid. Droidsound-E on Android doesn't have that problem.

You can also swap out the keyboards without a jailbreak. Lol. You have a lot to research still.
Let me clarify this: is there a single keyboard on the official App Store that can do what SwipeExpander does?
http://cydia.saurik.com/package/com.jerryen.swipeexpander/

I have yet to find one, sadly, and that's pretty much how I'd want a keyboard to work on iOS, since a lot of Android keyboards do that sort of thing. I just don't know if Apple's provided keyboard APIs allow that sort of functionality, in which case you're screwed without jailbreaking anyway. (Not that Android is much better with certain things like mice, where any decent FPS source port requires root for raw mouse input...)

Looks like iOS 12.1 not only fixed the beauty mode on the selfie mode, but also added a little bit more contrast to all photos by default in post processing for both front and rear facing cameras.

Well, it wasn't really a beauty mode (more of a flaw that looked like a beauty mode), but yeah -- seems like this was an opportunity to adjust image quality overall. One of the early complaints about the iPhone XS was the tendency for Smart HDR to occasionally overdo shadow brightening, rather than allowing some dark areas to stay dark.

I've been curious if you can use the eSIM on Pixels for any US carrier and then use the SIM tray for your overseas SIM(s). But in the light research I've done on it, it seems that the eSIM is only good for Project Fi service.

I'm using Pixel 2 on Fi with eSIM and the SIM card from a foreign carrier. It's only dual sim but not dual standby, so I have to switch back n forth between the SIMs.

Before I got rid of my iPhone X I compared it directly to my iPhone XS Max in terms of cellular/WiFi performance and reception. The iPhone X always showed equal or greater reception than my XS Max and retained the same speeds.

So recently I picked up an iPhone 8 Plus as a work phone that has the same Qualcomm X16 modem as my old iPhone X. Despite some updates that apparently "fixed" connectivity issues I still noticed that the 8 Plus has better reception. Not only that, but since the iOS 12.1 my XS Max also will randomly need its WiFi turned off and on again to get the internet to work on it (maybe 2-3 times per week).

Despite the large jump in performance Intel modems received this generation compared to their previous modems; they're still not up to Qualcomm modem standards which is disappointing.

I have an X and an XS Max and have been going back and forth between the two for the past few weeks.

I have not noticed any issues with connectivity /reception on AT&T at least. Where my X worked the Max does as well.

I like the size of the X for carrying around but the Max when using in most instances. Turned 50 last year so the larger text overall is nice and just generally having the larger screen has been very nice from a user standpoint.

Trying out some very thin TPU cases has made the size more manageable.

I do enjoy my Max quite a bit. The reception/connectivity issues I experience aren't anything major and I probably wouldn't have noticed if I didn't have both phones side by side. My XS Max still gets reception everywhere my 8 Plus does, but the 8 Plus just has better reception in certain areas.

The only thing that bugs me is the WiFi issue on my XS Max where I need to reset the WiFi on my phone a couple times per week. My phone didn't have the issue when I first got it despite numerous other users claiming to have the issue. But once I updated to iOS 12.1 then I began to have the issue as well which perplexes me. But again, only a minor annoyance and nothing that ruins my experience with the phone.

I'm on 12.1.1 and not noticing wifi issues at home. Did have some at the rink the last weekend when my son was playing in a tournament but I wrote it off to the wifi getting overloaded by all the people at the tournament.

My wife is wants the XS Max. Just waiting on a decent deal where you don't have to jump through hoops.

Good luck. Thats kind of the way things work in cellphones. Unless you can find a deal direct from Apple.

Deals direct from Apple are extremely rare. They just started to give additional trade-in value with the purchase of an iPhone XR likely due to weak sales. But other than that, I don't remember the last promo from Apple on iPhones that was note-worthy.

Apple can't have sales; that would tarnish their image and brand of being the best electronic jewelry you can buy.

Google seems like they're trying to do the same with the Pixels, though they have had a couple decent discounts or bundle deals on Pixel phones, they're just somewhat rare. The difference here though is that Apple has the market share to command this and Google absolutely does not. Also, I think Apple has overall better hardware both internally and in design, so that's another reason why they're somewhat justified, though I don't think any phone could be worth $1000+ to me at this point, even with 0% financing, it's just absurd.

I have an iPhone XR but I'm unwilling to pay the premium for an iPhone X or XS and especially not the maxes. But let me play the devil's advocate here. You are on your smartphone way more than any other device you own. The devIce is your TV, your camera, your computer, your scheduler, and your babysitter perhaps - among numerous other things.

The argument is there are $600-700 devices out there that does most of all that pretty well too. What's the resale value? How's the security? Is this company spying on you? Is the company a POS paying off politicians? Etc etc.

So truly the iPhone XR and the Google Pixels are basically the best of both worlds there.

If there was a BOGO Pixel deals (soon after release) are available for everyone not just Verizon customers, I would have gotten them. Google's lose. But for now I'm happily using the iPhone XR.

There are ways (MASSIVE hoops to jump through) to get the Xs for about $350 that involve porting a ton of numbers into a prepaid service.

I just traded my wife's iPhone 7 in for $750 off an Xs on T-Mobile's promotion through costco. Add a line for 2 months ($40 total for me) and trade in a 7 or newer, and get a prepaid card for $750.

If there was a BOGO Pixel deals (soon after release) are available for everyone not just Verizon customers, I would have gotten them.

They had one for Fi customers.

Ya'll see this? First ever compelling reason for me to consider an iphone.
