Why are PC gaming developers going tone deaf?

We have two major publishers that have seemingly lost the needle on their compass.

Bethesda with Fallout 76, 96, something six. A multiplayer PVP based Fallout game with no in depth single player story line. That isn't fallout to me and it seems they are doing it just to do it with SOME IP. I don't see this as being a big win going forward... maybe I'll be wrong.

Blizzard with the blind cash grab and announcing it to a room packed full of long time Diablo PC Fans. What they hell were they thinking with this? Again they lost the needle. I hope they can find it again.

Any other major developers that have just left their fan base behind and gone way off track?

So both are trying out different things. Big whoop. Obviously MMOs are a big part of online play, and so is mobile. Seems reasonable to pivot a few of their IPs into that waters to see what's up. Existing game are still being played and updated. If you don't like them, then don't play them.

I mean they could have had real balls and make up a new IP like Gearbox did with Battleborn and We Happy Few (taking some precedence over another Borderlands), but instead played a substantially safer role. I sort of remember folks flipping shit over Bungie making Destiny and not another Halo game. That seemed to go fairly well when people took stock of what they were angry about.

I guess am really not computing this tidal wave of entitlement and screeching over it all.

In my opinion, they are just trying to capitalize on recent trends and follow the $$$. Its not hard to see why Blizzard would try to address and capitalize on the $50 billion and fast growing mobile market. While this all may seem to make short-term financial sense, in my opinion it hurts their brand in the long run. I am not sure if they are taking into account potential brand dilution by watering down the franchises (Diablo, Fallout etc.) that took decades to build. Also, it is highly demotivating to creative talent and may create employment retention issues as evidenced at Blizzard. So destroying your brand + alienating your most creative employees for short term financial gain? Not sure, to me its not worth the trade off?

Companies make games for where they think is a market, it sucks if that market is not you but it's not the end of the world. Ofc it would suck less if those "different" games were made side by side with the ones you/we want. You also can't expect for a company to make the same game over and over again slightly modernised to keep fans happy, they can make whatever they want, if we don't like it we don't have to buy it, like I wont be buying COD BOIIII due to no sp campaign.

Also whatever a company does they will catch flak for example if blizz makes diablo 4 a modern diablo 2 some people will be very happy, others like me less so because we like 3 better then 2, but there is also a chance that some of the people who loved D2 will hate it because they changed a few things like not include their favorite class, or making it less OP etc..

You can but make the best game possbiel that you want to make and hope people will like it and you make enough money to warrant doing it.

It's what happens when you replace developers with marketers. Also, big data is the new trendy thing. Large companies believe that all the data they're collecting or buying takes out the risk of investment because it tells them ahead of time what the market "wants." It's why companies like Blizzard can tell customers "you don't know what you want" these days because they believe they have the data to back up that statement.

The above combined with the fact that most of them are living in an echo chamber supported by the press that gobbles their cocks it's no wonder the gaming industry is in this state.

I'm curious why someone thinks these releases mean no other releases in the other series. It's not "zero sum."

Because when you make money hand over fist or have the possibility to, nothing else matters.

My main gripe ? This utterly expensive re-definition of the word “free”.

Folks, these are not games any more. They are modern day designer drugs.

They should reboot “Breaking Bad” but in this new version Walt teams up with a computer class geek and writes game software in a well air conditioned Winnebago. Instead of sudoefredren they have a fridge full of Red Bull.

And the old garp “don’t like it don’t buy it” has not saved me from my World Of Warships addiction.

Those Russians know how to cook game. Dabloons will be the death of me.

This horse has been beat to shit. It would make no sense for them to release a full fledged SP campaign this soon after Fallout 4. Thats why they're calling it Fallout 76 instead of Fallout 5. That aspect of this debate seems like controversy for the sake of controversy.

As to the wisdom (or lack of) trying this experiment with Multiplayer Fallout at all, that's a different topic and I guess the tantrums will rage because it's not a game that caters to everyone's unique expectations of Fallout.

Soon? It's coming up on 3 years in a few days since Fallout 4 came out. 3 years is about the normal amount of time between sequels in the industry for those franchises not on an annual schedule.

I guess am really not computing this tidal wave of entitlement and screeching over it all.

The devs are not entitled to our money or our praise either. That's what's so funny about these types of anti-consumer reactions: we the consumers are just "acting entitled" because we called a bullshit product bullshit. Diablo fans are allowed to heap praise on the IP, but any criticism is invalid because "you don't have to play it."

In the case of Diablo, those devs were presenting a game developed by another studio; it's not even their own work so who cares how they felt about the reception they received?

Certainly disagree with a product... sure.. go ahead.. but the OVERREACTION like they went off and made a video game about skinning your childhood pets while torturing your family in a woodshed.. the reaction is one akin to players actually being attacked. That's where I don't get it. Hell - maybe I never will.. but it seems so 'autistic screeching' meme.

This is where I'm at. Everyone is entitled to their opinion of a product, but these days people seem to have lost their grasp on what a reasonable reaction should be. I'm heavily anticipating Diablo 4 and I'd much rather have seen that announced than a mobile game I will never play, but at the end of the day, it doesn't matter. Bioware doesn't owe me Diablo 4. I can accept without malice that eventually Diablo 4 will be released, and I've got plenty of other things to do before then. Instead of a reasonable reaction, most people these days will go spam social media, review bomb, and generally just cry and whine on every platform where they can be heard because something didn't go exactly their way. Also... it's a video game. There are so many more important things going on that people could be channeling their enthusiasm into, but instead we're going to act like Bioware is Satan reborn because they announced the wrong video game.

I think gamers often forget that video game developers and publishers are businesses, and like any business, their sole essential requirement is to generate revenue. They don't make games as a personal favor, they don't do it out of the goodness of their hearts. Obviously they want to make products that people like, but every single thing they do still comes down to the almighty dollar. Sometimes gamers want or expect things that do not make financial sense and game developers/publishers aren't going to do things that are not financially smart just to make people happy. In the case of Diablo, we all know that Diablo 4 will be a profitable game, but that doesn't mean there aren't other, more profitable avenues that Bioware could be going down right now. Is Diablo 3 still generating revenue for them? If so, it makes more sense to look towards an audience that is not currently generating them revenue than to replace one that still is. Mobile gaming is huge right now, it makes sense that Bioware would want to enter that market. If people would step back from their keyboards and think for a minute, they might realize that a financially successful mobile game could lead to a larger budget for Diablo 4, resulting in a bigger, better game.

First don't buy into the PR spin, after the PR disasters of the last decade, I'd put money down that the most egregious of online protester are shills for the company helping change the narrative. Changing the narrative has been key to all these PR disasters.

90% of all gamers are just disappointed and want to voice that in hopes they will get D4. The extremes should be ignored.

Second, I have said it before, it was the height of stupidity to announce a mobile title like this. This kind of announcement should have been saved for an investors meeting, not a gaming conference. That by in large is why this reaction has transpired. If I can do a better job in an industry I don't even work in, whomevers idea this was should be fired.

Lastly, I agree, wish companies had more balls, but the reality is large corporations with investors and big investments in development cannot readly take those risks. Indie gaming is where it's at.

My main gripe ? This utterly expensive re-definition of the word “free”.

It's not a drug, it is literally an extension of VLTs. It's an insidious addiction that these companies are promoting. These programs need to be reclassified as gambling NOW.

you got to understand, developers are no longer in the business to please consumers, now they are in the business to please shareholders. Shareholders see how GTA5 has had 5 billion in revenue and so now games have to find some way to tap into significant revenue. Gone are the days when making 3 million was amazing. If a company cannot produce a great monetization vision then shareholders take their money elsewhere.

Shareholders? Outside of Activision/Blizzard on the stock market, which company churning out AAA games is listed? Sure.. MSFT, EA, and TTWO.. but that's what - four out of a crowd of thousands?

tell me how many studios have been bought and dissolved the past few years. probably shareholder is the wrong term. you can probably replace it with publisher. developers generally don't have the money (flexibility) to do what they want and to get it they enter the crazy publisher deals. some are good, others not so much.

Guys lets not debate that money is the driving factor here. Nobody is out there making video games and giving up years of their lives just to share a vision. They are doing this in hopes that their work is appreciated. That appreciation is shown through financial success. They can sell millions of video games over years and make hundreds of thousands of dollars after everyone takes their piece of he pie. OR they can sell direct to consumers via a digital medium and make money IMMEDIATELY. With the lion's share of the pie going to them. And if they are really successful they can sell out to a company like EA and walk away from it all. (See the founds of Bioware as an example. Also the guys that made Age of Empires.)

Great companies DO happen. They last for 5-10 years then the owners are feeling done, or someone makes them a cash money offer they really have no reason to say no to (other than to negotiate a higher offer). They get a huge payday. The workers if they are nice get a nice payday too.. and those that can afford to not work for EA walk away. IT's happened so many times.

So yes I appreciate that the developers and owners of these companies want to make money hand over fist, and hopefully churn out a good product that connects with their audience and hopefully expands it.

But Blizzard and Bioware have managed to disconnect from the fan base and try to shoehorn in something based on a non gamer non fan only cash driven board of directors. That is the failure.

A successful mobile game will mean profits for their shareholders; Blizzard is not in the position of scraping together money for game budgets. There is no reason to believe that a financially successful mobile game will do anything other than encourage them to keep releasing mobile games, especially if they can outsource much of the work like with Diablo Immortal. They have multiple record-selling PC games in the series so there's already every reason for them to continue to push the PC platform.

This "gamers need to remember that developers and publishers are businesses" is so backward. In what backward-ass world should I as the consumer take time to consider the needs of the company when considering a product they are pushing? They aren't going to make games just because we want them? What? Unfortunately there's a "too big to fail" element to some of these bigger conglomerates and decisions like these show that they know it.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion of a product, but these days people seem to have lost their grasp on what a reasonable reaction should be..

This is the trend in general, not just in gaming. Someone does something you don't agree with? Go off the deep end and call for their heads. It's totally out of whack.

I think we just give to much of a platform to vocal minorities. They have always been yelling for people's heads, its just society didn't give a shit and moved on, now we have decided we at least need to look like we care about everything.

We have basically not only started feeding the trolls, but given them a prime spot at the banquet table.

This younger generation making games has no idea what makes a good game and don't build of the successors of the past.
Then the fans are so cranky so why not make them crankier by making bad games =)
It usually takes a foreign studio with outside focus and vision to make a game that is true to the original vision which just makes it a good game.

Look, to be honest, people probably have a right to feel butthurt about the announcement. They most likely have thousands of hours in the game. Diablo would probably be dead except for the people continuously playing it and supporting the community through the years. That model is actively supported by devs through the seasons concept. Go and buy Diablo 3. It will cost you 30 bucks unless you manage a rare sale.

As for mobile, fuck, I don't want to play games on my phone. I have enough problems with battery issues. The concept is somewhat ludicrous to me. I mean sure, lots of people do it, more power to them. But I may play video games for hours at a time. How does mobile support that model?

You forgot to mention Bioware with Anthem.

To answer the question they didn't gone tone deaf, but the coins falling into the microtransaction / lootbox slotmachine drowns everything out. They don't want to listen, they want a piece of that market.
What they failed to realize is that the gamers who play Diablo 3 and FO, and those who play fortnite and mobile games are different groups, with only minor overlap.
They're trying to feed the lion with hay. And they can't understand why isn't it eating. The "don't you have phones" question is proof enough of that. It's like asking the lion, don't you have a stomach? Why, then eat this hay!

I'm curious why someone thinks these releases mean no other releases in the other series. It's not "zero sum."
Yes it is, if F76 would become any kind of significant hit, you can bet any other projects in pre-production would be postponed indefinitely. Why do you think blizzard isn't releasing sp games? Why do you think valve stopped making games? Because they don't need to.
So yes it is almost certainly zero sum or very close to it.

That is a bullshit excuse. If they released a Fallout / TES type sp campaign every 6 months I'd be there playing all of them on day 1. It was 3 years since F4, I all but forgotten it by now. Too soon, my ass. The same bullshit argument was used by lucasfilm on why solo flopped. It effing flopped because the last jedi was a dumpsterfire and people lost interest. It didn't flop because it was too soon.

Blizzard released Diablo 3 not so long ago. Still supporting it. About to release a Switch version.

Released StarCraft 2 and it's expansions. Still support it as it went F2P.

Released StarCraft Remastered.

Is about to release WarCraft 3 "remastered" with additional changes.

Bethesda has released multiple things over the course of the last few years. Already announced whatever that Star Field or whatever it's called. I'm going to assume that's their next big "Skyrim" game.

I'm always amused by this sense of entitlement in gamers and this vast assumption that their taste are the only things that matter. The truth is that Fallout 4 was stale. Super stale. This project seems to be of a different beast and looks to co-exist with it...not replace it. Very similar to FFXI or FFXIV in terms of being a side project/MMO. None of those prevent Square from developing other projects. Bethesda has a vast portfolio. If Fallout 76 allows the brand to float a bit while the conjure up a more deserving follow up, then it'll be better for everyone.

I'm actually excited for their Sci-Fi Skyrim/Fallout.

Also, Valve is about to release a game in the coming months. Actually quite excited for it because I enjoy Richard Garfield...being a boardgamer myself.

The definition of not so long ago, seems pretty extraordinary for some. Whatever fits your narrative I guess. Recently 5-8 years ago. LOL

Oh yeah, shut up sp gamers, you're getting age old games, that you can pay for again, even though you bought them twice or three times already over the years.

Guess you weren't listening to the part where I said, "if fallout 76 is a success" they will put everything else on the backburner. If not there already as they scramble to get this launch in order.

Yeah, it is so entitled when some gamers present their own opinion as the truth. I can't believe the forum doesn't break because of such hypocrisy crammed into one thought.

How could I get excited for something that is years away? Look

Morrowind : 2002
Oblivion : 2006
Fallout 3 : 2008
Fallout NV : 2010
Skyrim : 2011
Fallout 4 : 2015

So don't try to sell me that Fallout 76 is not a replacement, but meant to co-exist with their single player games. If TES6 or Starfield was coming next year at the latest I'd agree, but they haven't even been revealed yet. TES6 wasn't even announced yet. The best I can hope for is 2020 for starfield, and 2021 for TES6.Assuming they work on them in parallel. But that definitely not realistic if they really want to keep F76 alive "forever".

Also, Valve is about to release a game in the coming months. Actually quite excited for it because I enjoy Richard Garfield...being a boardgamer myself.
A card collecting game, really? That might be a worse insult than a mobile game. At least they didn't sell tickets to the announcement party to Half-Life fans.

I don't think Bethesda was nearly as a bad as Blizzard/Activision. Fallout 76 is definitely another direction but not a completely bad idea (note: i haven't actually played the beta to accurately comment on it). They at least announced Elder Scrolls 6 after they discussed Blades. They actually know what we want to play.

Blizzard on the other hand... I don't understand the disconnect. How did this go beyond a boardroom discussion? They could have asked any gamer out there and would have been told to abort mission. It baffles me that they were completely caught off guard with the reaction. How are they so out of touch? Who's in the charge of the decision making and how are they collecting their marketing data? Is having even the most basic understanding of video games not on their hiring criteria?

Money. Also they are no longer catering to the US/European market. China is a big online/mobile gaming market and mobile gaming is where the money is. The only thing we can do is NOT buy the games. Money talks.

The larger the market grows, the crappier the games become as they start tailoring to the lowest common denominator. First consoles destroyed the depth of PC games (for major releases) and now mobile is putting the final nail in the coffin. As illustrated by Diablo franchise that spanned through these time periods (Diablo 2) PC only and considered the best in the series. Diablo 3 came out and tried to capitalize on consoles and was generally seen far inferior to Diablo 2. And now this mobile abomination.... Sorry to sound like an elitist, but once you bring in ignorant masses to the market and then actively tailor to them - you are bound to end with subpar gaming experiences.

I wouldn't call them dumb. For many their phone IS their home pc. IT is where they do everything people used to do with desktop or mobile computer platforms. I don't consider them being Dumb because they can't afford a nice phone AND a gaming computer AND a gaming Laptop, AND multiple consoles in their homes.

Ignorant fits because in all honesty they don't know what they are missing. I've seen the game play videos online. Fortnight or whatever other cross platform game that also plays on PC intrinsically looks the same on all systems.

Take Two
Activision
ZeniMax
NCsoft
Sega
Bandai
Bethesda
THQ
Ubisoft
Capcom
Epic Games
Paradox
Eidos
Square Enix
Nexon
2K Games
Nintendo
Koei Tecmo
Konami
CD Projekt
WB
Zynga
Sony
Valve

All of the above are public traded companies.

Agree - replaced dumb, left ignorant as your point is well taken. However, for the same cost of the shiny game capable phone they could get a low or mid-end PC so I definitely stand with ignorant.

Fair enough. Though it's pretty hard to carry your gaming PC in your pocket and make phone calls or check facebook while your riding on the bus with it. ;)

True gamers need to make certain tradoffs and sacrifices ;)

I started out on a computer screen not much larger than my phone.
