every 3dfx card... then every nvidia top end gpu more or less every generation single card solutions except for Titan cards. for every 1 cpu upgrade, I go through 4-5 gpu upgrades.

I can't even remember all the video cards! But I can remember when I first started to take GPUs seriously I started with SLI.

2x 6600GT in SLI. Two of these puppies in SLI either beat out or matched the much more expensive 6800 Ultra at that time.

Then I went to a 5870. But decide hey why not try out that dual GPU thing again.

When the 5970 dropped, I bought it. And just to double down, I thought hey why not QUAD GPUs??

Bought a second 5970. Biggest MISTAKE of my life.

Programs had no idea what to do with Quad CrossfireX. Everything looked terrible and slow. Drivers were bad and updated slowly.

So when the GTX 480 came out I sold both of my 5970s and bought 2x GTX 480 for SLI.

Now we were COOKING with gas! Literally... those GPUs ran so hot that I decided to waterblock both of them.

Of course this meant that I had to watercool my system, and why not throw in a CPU block as well, a couple of 360 rads to keep everything cool.

Everything had to be custom at that time so the watercooling alone was probably around $1000 just to install the whole loop and the waterblocks, fittings, pump, res, etc. etc.

So I had the fastest system on my block for a while and of course technology advanced. I lost interest in watercooling.

Just bought a regular old air cooled GTX 770 to upgrade. Much lower heat, energy, and don't have to deal with SLI issues, and performance felt smoother/less choppy on a single GPU.

The mining craze started after this and GPU prices skyrocketed so I just sat tight.

10 series came out, watched and waited. Then the RTX series announced. Prices are just insane - $1200, are you kidding me? Nobody even mines anymore!

I then bought the GTX 1080 because the performance was good enough and the price was real good now.

Got an all in one water cooled GTX 1080 from EVGA and it runs like a dream. Less than 55c under load and less than 50c on idle. Powerful enough at 1440p which matches my 32" 1440p monitor.

I'm not going to 4K until I can get at least a 32" 144 hz for a reasonable price. And $2000 for that type of monitor is not what I consider reasonable.

All in all it's been one hell of a ride. I've used both AMD and Nvidia. What bothered me the most and made me switch back to the green team was the driver support and the poor multi gpu support.

Of course ditching multi-gpu entirely has made life a lot easier. I don't think I'm taking that up again anytime soon. It just feels like a trap. You get more FPS but if it feels choppier and you see tearing from all the high frames, it's not wroth it.

Yes I'm aware there is g-sync/freesync but those just don't work correctly with SLI or Crossfire enabled so forget it, back to the single GPU life for me!

You and I bought a Banshee for the exact same reasons - to play Unreal! I also remember being blown away not much later by Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation. Seeing that game, which in itself wasn't great, move super smoothly at 1024x768 was the actual revelation. I can never forget the amazement I felt with those 2 games thanks to the Banshee's power.

Crossfire sucks. SLI probably sucks. Watercooling your GPU is much better than your CPU, if you had to choose only one!

nvidia drivers were what won me over circa 2006. I can probably count on one hand the amount of driver problems Ive had with them. That seems to be changing lately though, feels like they are causing instability in win10.
