At first I said this was a no brainer. But the opportunity for a brand new card has me intrigued (2070).

Full warranty and all that. Kyle said the 1080ti was 10-20% faster depending on game. Which is a lot.

Although according to TPU the only games I really play (BF1 and COD) the difference was under 10fps between the two.

I wonder if the performance of the 2070 will mature much over time. Probably not a whole lot? Future games (BFV) maybe optimized for the newer cards?

Any thoughts?

1080ti all the way.. no reason to go with RTX with anything below RTX 2080 and almost exclusively at 4K.

Too much issues with RTX ATM and only way to guarantee any upgrade metric over pascal (price, performance, noise, temps, power) its basically only 2080ti...

There might be some games that come out that are optimized for the RTX cores. However so far anything out there only uses limited raytracing, and being limited to one vendor it could end up like Physx where adoption never really takes off. The prices are roughly the same, although as you've said you'll get a longer warranty with a 2070 instead of a used 1080ti, and you wouldn't need to worry whether the fans on the new card have been worked to death mining or not.

I was in a similar situation as you and picked up a used 1080 ti from a user here and slapped a water cooler on the card, an MSI 1080 ti OC ARMOR w/Kraken G12 + Corsair H55; which means I see a consistent 2050MHz @52-56C more or less all the time when it's under load and manages to be quieter than the stock cooler ever was and with much better heat dissipation. Custom, yes, cheap(ish) yes, and able to push clocks to a reasonably steady high? Yes.

Faster for the games I play at a slightly higher cost when combined with the cooling set up, no ray tracing support but there are also no games for that yet.

OP are you comparing a new RTX 2070 against a used GTX 1080 Ti? What about the RTX 2080? An RTX 2080 selling at MSRP shouldn't cost much more than a GTX 1080 Ti. And it will be a much better card overall.

That's not accurate. A RTX2080 is $750-850. A used GTX1080Ti is $500-550. The new RTX2070 to used GTX1080Ti is the dollar for dollar comparison.

Right but you're comparing a brand new card with new features and a full warranty against a card that was likely mined into the ground. Caveat emptor. The prices on the RTX 2080 cards should settle soon. They should be selling at the $699USD MSRP. What we are seeing now is an early adopter tax. IMO the extra $150 for the RTX 2080 is well worth it. I know we haven't seen the features yet but DLSS in particular looks extremely interesting.

Remember Black Friday is three weeks away.

I don't like to buy used.. I know there are plenty of people that have had good luck with used cards but I'm not one of them.

It's worth it to me to spend a little more for new gear. A 1080 Ti is a better card but not for nearly $200 more.

So yeah, I vote brand spanking new 2070 with full warranty, manufacturerfor and retailer support for ~$550 over a ~$600 used 1080 Ti.

I'm comparing here at the $500 mark. If I go 2070 I would probably get the EVGA black, seems like a fine card. If I went 1080ti I would hunt for something right at $500. Two strix 1080ti's went for $500 on this site a day or two ago. They go quick but still.

New in box, full warranty is very tempting, but giving up a quite large bit of performance is not. I buy used all the time, both the 1070 and 1060 I currently have were pre-owned. As long as there is decent warranty I'm ok with it. I have seen a lot of 1080ti's that are only a year old for sale. Still a nice 2 years left.

Most likely the card will still be under warranty and I'm still waiting for this huge die-off of 10 series cards from mining.

You'll get the remainder of the warranty thats left if ya buy a used evga card.

Evga 1080ti ftw would get my vote but your looking at like $600+ for one used. An elite with 12ghz memory speed is rare and cost more.

Do you sell used?

Is it even possible there are good sellers among the bad?

I don't mean crooked sellers vs honest ones. I'm talking about buying a used product and it shitting the bed not long after I get it. Not because I got ripped off, just that it's a used product and a whole lot closer to giving up the ghost.

Again, I know there are plenty of people that buy used stuff and it works great. Every time I buy shit used, I don't have as good a luck.

For something as important and as expensive as a GPU, I rather pay more and get a brand new one.

I've bought a bunch of cards used, never had a problem.

If you time it right, buying used and then selling your old card, upgrades can be done on the cheap. Though the mining situation did shake this up a bit.

My opinion, get the RTX 2070. It will be a new card with warranty, you don't have to take any chances (especially with miners offloading their stock).

You also can get the RT/DLSS features when those become available, and you'll probably be saving money. Seems like a win win.

If the timing works out it can definitely be worth going used. I managed to buy my 1070 used right before people realized they were good for mining, then sold off my 390 a week later for the same price. Luckily the 1070 was barely used when I got it with no coil whine or other issues, although the 280X and 290 I bought during the previous mining firesales both had their fans die soon after. At least they we're both cheap at the time with transferrable warranties.

Used 1080ti all the way. By the time Tray Racing and Dang Lucrative Super Sampling are mainstream enough for the average gamer to give a rat, the 20-series are going to be laughably outdated, and early adopters will have (and have already) paid through the nose for marketing fluff.

The only RTX card worth a toss is the 2080ti - and that's ONLY if money is truly no object and price/performance is a meaningless metric to you.

Well it depends on what FPS you expect at which resolution. 10 fps can make the difference between a great experience, playable and unplayable.

Whlile I think Turing performance can improve via drivers, I don't think its going to be a deal breaker. Its other features like RTX and DLSS that could tip the scale. But on performance alone with current games , I'd go with the GTX1080Ti, maybe wait for a BlackFriday deal?

put me down for 1080Ti as well. sometimes ebay has 10-15% off coupons. i was seeing 1080ti for $375 ish though, not so much now that rtx is a mild flop.

Yeah getting one of those coupons and getting one for sub 500 is a great price.

Yeah they have gone up for sure since the launch, they were easy at $500 now its only the obviously mined ones.

Those ebay coupons are great but I don't love buying (or selling) on Ebay, I guess your better protected buying but still. I have been looking on there though, wish there was some rhyme or reason to the coupons.

Oh no not the mined ones!!!!! Try to put one of those in your PC and it will self-destruct in 48hrs. And dude it's sellers that get fucked on ebay, buyers get their way 99.99999999% of the time.

I'm not over paranoid about mined cards like some. But yeah if its ran for six months straight, don't really want to spend $500-600 for that when another can be had for similar price.

Yeah I know sellers do get screwed, I have some stuff on there right now I'm a little nervous about.

Personally I'd watch the [H] B/S/T forums like a hawk and forego eBay entirely. If you buy from a user here, even a miner, you're likely to get a card from a person who cares about (and cares for) their hardware.

I personally expect that mining on a card impacts it similarly to an aggressive overclock on a CPU: yes it will reduce the useful life of the silicon, but the average enthusiast is still going to upgrade many years before the thing would die a natural death.

Yeah I doubt I will buy a gpu on ebay. I think I watch the [H] FS section a little too closely at times lol.

As long as the card is still under warranty for a good year or so I'd have no problems buying on ebay. I'd have just about zero concern buying from the [H] FS thread, most of those cards are well kept whether or not they were mined on.

Anyone have experience with 1080ti blower cards? A local miner is selling some off for cheap. Two years warranty left.

But they run at 80-85c he says. And I know these are usually very loud. Sweet deal though ($450)

You can deal with it, set a very aggresive fan curve and you will be fine.

is not that bad honestly, a 70% fan speed it's good enough to keep temps in control without having the turbo jet engine on all the time. however the temperature the card run will depend on ambient temperature and case airflow, if you have a good case with proper airflow your card will be able to keep better temps at lower fan speed.. for the price it worth the shoot, worse case scenario you sell it or invest a little more on a third party cooler as the arctic accelero ones, or you may just want to spend a bit more for an AIB cooled 1080ti. however as said, at that price worth the try.

I think blower cards are the worst for mining as they run at higher temperatures compared to custom cooled.

I know if it was any other card could easily flip it. He has 8 of them. I have an H200 itx case, my current gpu (1070 G1) stays nice and cool, but not sure how a blower would work. I looked at the Accelero, they add to much bulk to the back of the card, and the EVGA Hybrid kits seem to be all dried up.

The price is too dang good though.

The price is good enough to justify a custom loop. :D

I have a MSI 1080 Ti Gaming X card that has only been used for mild gaming if you are interested.
