Phone Battery Life Is Getting Worse

I understand the process, it's just really disappointing. :(

That I can definitely agree with. Would be wonderful to see a battery technology that is higher capacity, safer, and less expensive would be nice. As it stands now there's a lot that we can't do with current batteries that goes far beyond cell phones. Longer range electric cars and meaningful electrical grid storage come to mind.

Undoubtedly their telemetry shows you buy the phone anyway and shorter battery life makes you come back sooner for the next one...

The overall trend of batteries being unable to keep up as the tech inside gets better is troubling, for sure.

But the results of these tests aren't yet that staggering. Who uses their phone that much in a day that the battery dies? And if you're that person, at that high of a usage rate will 20 minutes of less phone time really be that detrimental to your user experience?

In the years to come I can see it getting worse so it's good that this trend is being noticed now. Hopefully there is bigger emphasis on battery capacity and, heck, even more efficient energy saving features through software.

Many apps run in the background. Even when I think they're off...they're not.

Google, I'm looking at you.

If you are going to blame google then that means you are using a nexus or pixel which both are using googles factory android rom. Within their factory rom, you can disable a great portion of apps which will no longer run in the background. If there are still apps present that you want to disable then simply root the phone. At that point youll be able to disable anything you want to the point where you can cause alot of damage. Alot of the apps that cant be disabled are enforced to run for the seemless function of the phone.
There are still some apps that are enforced that have no merit to the systems operation like Facebook that's not able to be disabled unless rooted.

If you arent using a google specific phone then blame the company that altered the factory rom for their phone or used an entirly custom rom. They certainly enforce restrictions so alot of their apps cant be disabled unless rooted.

The race to thinness isn't helping in many ways.... lost a headphone jack, lost battery life, added bumps for protrusions such as a camera. (wtf new iPad Pro)

Just make a damn phone that has well rounded battery life and connectivity that makes sense for the average person.

I'd imagine the excessively large screens of the phablets don't help either. And the fact that the current UI trend is towards making everything bright white, which - aside from looking ugly as hell and scorching my eyeballs, makes AMOLED screens draw more power.

Yeah, I don't give a rats ass about thinness. Give me a thicker phone with longer battery life. I'm not a fashion whore.

Also, my 2 year old phone is plenty fast, so don't use faster more power hungry chips on my account. I don't even care much at all about the GPU. I don't play games on my phone. All I want is a device with long battery life for browsing and email, and some limited app use.

They have merit for Facebook.

Remember, as far as apps are concerned, you are not the customer. You are the product.

If the app can't stay open in the background and collect your location and listen to everything you say and send it home to the mothership to be monetized they have no reason to release an app in the first place.

This applies to just about every app you can download. There is a reason Fitbit won't let me sync my watches without location service permissions being granted...

I really hope they refresh the XR next year when I need to upgrade. It seems like the best phone right now for the money. Maybe increase the resolution a little bit while they are at it :D

Well one thing to keep in mind is the XS and XS Max use a Pentile display which only has two sub pixels per pixel. So while on paper the XS lineup has higher resolution, it has fewer sub pixels overall per inch...

I was never bothered by pentile. The only one that was “off” was the Samsung blue hue screens but even then the screen looked pretty good.
