Recently upgraded to an AMD 2700x (from an Ivy Bridge) but still am using a GTX 970 video card, would $300 be enough for a good upgrade that would be worth it?

On a non-related note, playing FarCry 5, game always crashes 7/8's of the way through the game on a cutscene with the female baddie... total blackscreen that requires a power down/up to recover. Both systems did this, which leads me to video card or video driver issue. Could be related to the 3.5 gb of vram the GTX 970 has?

If it's because of the video card memory, try lowering quality settings and try again.

You can consider a 1070 Ti. I see some for $400, maybe cheaper if you can find used.

Far Cry 5 is really buggy. One thing that helped me is changing the power limit for the GPU in Afterburner. Some people said setting it to 80% would help (seemed to work for me too). You can also try disabling AA.

It’s really a sad state of affairs. There isn’t anything available new for $300 that’s much faster than a 970.

Yup. It's basically 1060/RX580-grade, with a bit tighter memory constraints depending on the comparison. So you'd need Vega/1070-level to see any real improvement.

And I don't recommend trying SLI; ran that for years, and while it works, the memory limitation narrows the use cases. You'll get more framerates in well-supported titles but you can't raise settings willy-nilly.

For $300 you should buy used 1070ti off ebay.
This is what I bought recently and Its a 1440P beast.
7nm GPU's will be out late 2019 and you can spend real money then.

1080 on the b-stock had a special going for $399 USD a few weeks back

I do a used 1070 for around 240 and under that includes tax/shipping... there are a few around if you look hard enough and then save for the next series of video card. I don't recommend a 1070ti because all that is a cut down version of the 1080. It uses the same amount of wattage as a 1080. You can buy a used 1080 for around $350 tax/shipping included, as of this posting.

first off what resolution do you play at and if it's not 1440p/4k do you plan on upgrading to that in the next year or two? because that's a huge deciding factor on what you should be spending your money on..

Good point, not playing at 1440 or 4k yet... but I can wait until next year if next gen are a good jump.

at 1080p i'd look at used RX580's or GTX 1060 6GB.. more than enough power to hold you over for the next couple years or if next gen AMD looks like it's worth upgrading to and/or forces RTX card prices to drop massively.. at the top end i wouldn't go any higher than the vega 56 or GTX 1070 if you can find them under 300 bucks used/new. anything above that is a complete waste of money in my opinion if you don't plan on moving up in resolution/refresh rate any time soon.

noticed on amazon evga 1070 ti ftw ultra silent for $400 free shiping, brand new

Mine should be here today...........
