Korean players have long dominated StarCraft tournaments, but that streak has finally been broken at this year’s World Championship Series: Finnish player Joona “Serral” Sotala (Zerg) managed to best Kim “Stats” Dae Yeob (Protoss) 4-2 in the StarCraft II final yesterday. Per PC Gamer, “skip to 1:40:00 to watch Serral's final, decisive push—accompanied by some brilliant commentary.”

He took a 3-0 lead in the best-of-seven series before Stats surged back to win the next two games. It wasn't enough to stop Serral, however, who won the sixth game to take a commanding victory. He was expected to meet Cho “Maru” Seong Ju, considered the world's second best player, in the finals, but Maru was beaten by Kim “sOs” Yoo Jin in the playoffs. Stats went on to sweep sOs in the semis.

How is it important what ethnicity said player is.

Nationality and culture would be important here too- the last perhaps the most important, as it's likely the greatest contributor to the dominance of players from Korea.

He did well in GSL, and now this. Now we need a non-Korean in ASL or KSL but I just don't see it happening

Of course it's not the ethnicity lol. Most of the scene is there. Lots of people go there to live and play. This one really made it, even though it wasn't in Korea

I wasn't aware that Koreans are dominant in that arena. I've been out of touch when it comes to gaming for a bit as Family & work takes up the bulk of my time now

Starcraft is a national sport for Koreans, like football in the US.

Star craft clearly needs more diversity. How racist that one group of people are better at something! Its almost like dog breeds or something gosh

A Finn beating Korean at top levels of Starcraft? Hopefully this doesn't restart the Hyper-war.

Yeah thought that was the amusing when doing the intros they referred to the guy as "The non-Korean (something... couldn't pick it up)". I mean wow guys... (no pun).

That said watching just a little bit of this video just shows why I do not like multiplayer on games like this, I just don't think that fast. Give me a nice slow AI that I can harass and won't do complicated counter attacks on me, and I may win the game :D

To think that 6 of 8 in the quarter finals were Korean (1 mexican and 1 finlandese) show just how dominant they are

When looking for a mod to make Red Alert 3 easier, I found that my preferred play style is called "comp-stomping".

Such joyous celebration. It's not au...akward at all.

How about Finn?

They're Finnish, and he Finished first.
Also accepted is Finns

They're known to be people of few words, will drinks like russians, They formed after WW1 in 1917 as an Independent country and is just 101 years old after that won over the red army with 10x the army and people of knowing many languages but can't speak anyone well cause they never do the act of speech unless forced to :p
They're more like the baltic countries like estonia but they wanna be in the Scandinavia gang but aren't - They're Nordic but they look, act, behave differently to the Scandinavian countries but no hostility between us and we're all friendly

Okay that was a good last game, but Stats was on the back foot for so much of that game.

Oh, of course if it isn't going to be a Korean, it's going to be a Finn! I recall seeing a lot of top players in many different games from those two countries.

So who was considered the world's best player? Am I reading this correctly? The best player wasn't in the tourny and he ended up beating the 2nd best?

Nationality and culture would be important here too
Nationality and culture are literally the definition of ethnicity but people conflate race and ethnicity all the time.
