Harry Potter and Hollyoaks actress Anna Shaffer has been cast as The Witcher staple Triss Merigold, sorceress and love interest of Geralt of Rivia. One Angry Gamer notes that this is the second major character to be race swapped, following the announcement that Yennefer would be played by Indian actress Anya Chalotra. “There are a lot more diverse cast members being featured in the show than what appeared in the game, with Netflix’s agenda clearly being on display.”

ScreenRant is reporting that Anna Shaffer was cast to play Triss Merigold. Shaffer’s past credits include playing Romilda Vane in Harry Potter and Ruby Button from Hollyoaks. The British-born born actress has mostly had small roles in various projects over the years, but this could end up being her big break if it doesn’t fail (but given a lot of the negative press centering around the casting of Netflix’s The Witcher, that seems unlikely).

Seriously though, why do THEY care so much? I see no one crying for more diversity? I see no one saying that white characters shouldn't be white...so why are they doing this?

All I've seen are people that are pissed that they can't stick to the fucking source material and the idiots that call those people "racists". That's it. Outside of that I don't see anyone else calling out Netflix or anything for "whitewashing" and the like.

It's almost like some Naughty Dog/The Last of Us 2 shit where the whole crew and writers are just trying to be sooooo diverse and "look at us we're the good guys!" that it's just making things worse, not better. Diversities sake for diversities sake is a bad thing and takes advantage of others, if anything. It's like Affirmative Action for acting for anyone that isn't white.

It's interesting to watch them cram their agenda down everyone's throat. Because, you know, you're not woke.

I wonder how they'd react if I did the same to them?

I'm getting closer and closer to ending my Netflix subscription. This is one more weight clunking down on the "end it" side of the scale.

Does anything in the story revolve around this character being white? If not then it really shouldn't matter as long as the actress is good.

Personally I could look at this girl all day....

Is she black? Jewish? Either way, I really don't care as long as she can act. And by act, I don't mean like a teenager (like in the clip).

Yeah, I'm not too sure having seen a few of Netflix original movies/eps. Seems like a lot of low budget straight to video type of movie production. The whole diversity thing is a huge turd and it seems Hollywood is on the same bandwagon as well.

I remember her from hollyoaks and she was ok for that sort of naggy older sister type role. She was a total flop in HarryPotter

I have no idea what the character is meant to be like in Witcher so I can't comment on whether she is a good pick but she can be good.
Diversity for Diveristy sake is bad ... you need the right actor to do the role justice. All the SJW noise about Scarlett Johansson being cast in Ghost in the Shell was a drain... She is an ok actress, a big name (to pull people in to watch it), the character itself is an ANDROID yet noise was made because it wasn't asian.
Recently some film was criticized for not picking a trans actor to play a trans role ... is there an abundance of trans actors of suitable skill? no! the point of ACTING is to act what you are NOT

So now a "woman of colour" has been placed in a role that so far is seen to be white for the sake of diversity... I don't care but the hypocrisy speaks volume

It's just the way shows are. From The Witcher subreddit:
a person named -lucca- predicted the following

Judging by other netflix shows that I have seen, I predict the following:

  • Geralt will have an inconsistent power level. He will be in situations where the obvious solution would be to use one of his signs, but he won't and there will be no explanation for it other than CGI budget constraints. The same applies to his senses, whereas in one episode he may hear the breathing of a guy hiding behind a tree and in the next he'd have people in armor sneaking up on him. To create tension, he will also be in more trouble against "low-level" creatures than he'd have any right to be. He may lose his powers at some point. He will get his ass handed to him by Yen or Triss at some point.
  • Geralt will apologize when he did nothing wrong.
  • The main characters will lie to each other and keep secrets from one another for no good reason, even though that they may have known each other for decades at that point.
  • Ciri will be a Daenerys-like power fantasy for teenage girls.
  • Yen will be intimidating and cunning and amazing.
  • Triss will be stunning and brave and amazing.
  • Fringilla will be more amazing than anyone else.
  • There will be B plots involving original characters in order to give them more screen time because the writers really like their characters. Everyone else will hate them.
  • There will a more diverse than should be expected mix of background actors for any given crowd scene, but all primitive bad guys (street thugs, ruffians, brigands, sexists) will be white without exception.
  • There will be one long and really good fight scene and a dozen rushed ones with punches clearly and obviously missing their target and rubber swords wobbling like giant dildos.
Overall it will be an affront to the fans, meh to the general audience, and amazing for progressive western women in their twenties. I don't believe that there will be a second season and under no circumstances will there be a third.

[edit] Forgot about the LGBTQA++ community:

  • A loving gay couple will show up in a seemingly natural way, but it will stick out because not a single healthy relationship had been shown until that point in the show.

Though, I disagree with the gay couple part. Most modern shows just seem to have the gay couple start making out for no reason whatsoever related to the story, or at best, shoehorned into the story.

But I'm guessing The Witcher will hit all the SJW agenda checkboxes, which seems very consistent with a lot of Netflix originals.

Not even going to bother, this turned into a major shit show of political, racial, insecurities and agendas for Netflix, All I wanted was a live action movie that was faithful to the actual books and game series......I am so sick of the world's garbage ruining my favorite franchises this is as bad as Blizzards Diablo crap.

Remember, you can't be all inclusive, without being exclusive.

Yeah, First Battlefield, then C&C, then this, then Fallout & now Diablo.

Damn, bad time to be a gamer with convictions.

I just don't get it, they either ignore the franchise or try reinventing the wheel to the point it isn't even mechanically close to the genre, don't label something an ARPG if it has zero RPG in it. Diablo 3 is Goldenaxe with a Diablo skin, so I mean it's not far off that they would try skinning other games because they are too lazy to make a game in a timely manner.

All I can do is look at this and thing what would happen if the shoe was on the other foot.

You know. Black Panther.

Luke Cage, Blade, and don't forget about the morons who yelled about Johannsen playing Major that apparently didn't read the manga enough to the point to realize her shell is a Caucasian prostitute shell, not that they didn't screw the movie up anyways. My other favorite was

The Netflix prediction thread is going to be spot on. Just watch. I'll give the show two episodes before I decide. I can't be bothered with Netflix agenda ruining such a great series.

I'm all about diversity when it's a positive thing. For example, having employees of different ideologies and backgrounds can make a team stronger (or tear it apart).

Could we please stop black washing, or other washing (FU Shyamalin for The Last Air Bender) characters? Make a new character if companies feel the need to give in to SJWs, but stop black washing. It's just as offensive as white washing. Possibly more so because it is hailed by SJWs as brave rather than offensive.

I want to like this show. But at this point I may have to like it because of how bad its gonna be!

yeah agree, i don't give a crap what any of them look like as long as they can act and play the role..

eh, can't be worse than the movie :)

Edit: If they really wanted to be inclusive they'd fire that cis white male and hire a black lesbian midget to play geralt.

There's nothing racist about pointing out that the whole appeal of the Witcher franchise is the Polish vibe it was created on.

The people, the culture, the accent, the local fantasy and fairy tales.

It needs to be maintained in a serious and believable fashion or the show won't have the proper feel and it will simply flop within a few episodes.

Gonna need some gay characters if they want to be truly inclusive. So, who's gonna be turned for the series? Or maybe just some totally new never before seen gay characters. The writes will bash the audience over the head with their sexual orientation even though it contributes noting to the story. Like on Star Trek Discovery. Gay or straight or whatever. Discovery's doctor is the worst ever.

Maybe when they reboot Friday or Barbershop they will recast with some white kids from Jersey, you know, for the sake of diversity. Personally I wouldn't be interested in watching them because it's culture that gives these films their quality, just like I'll probably pass on the Witcher.

I disagree, as I've said before. You can't make movies for the fans of a video game. It can't be 100% faithful to appease the gamers. The movie\show has to be broad enough to appeal to people like me who know nothing about the game. The majority of people aren't going to know it's polish history or even care. I don't know how many black or mix raced people were running around europe during the time frame this is set in, and really if it's a fantasy game, I don't expect it to be 100% adherent to the real world.

Look, I get why people are annoyed with it. They aren't hiring various races of people for these roles because they were the best actors they could get (afford), but instead looking for an actor to check off a diversity box first and hope they have some acting skills later. But this seems the way Hollywood is going to be doing business going forward and so the best we can hope for is that they at least make it a great show. Hopefully on par with the Punisher series and less like the Iron Fist series.

Given the number of bad to downright terrible video game movies there has been the past 20 years. The odds are already against this show being worth watching.

Yes, the story actually does revolve around that in a sense. Only whites are encouraged and expected to believe that their race is irrelevant. Other groups recognize that it always matters.

That's why you basically never see this happen the other way around.

There are so many gay charCters in the series. Even Ciri is at least bisexual.

This universe is already inclusive.

It happens because the general population for many decades has been brainwashed into believing that people of color & disabilities have a disadvantage. They do not.
