Help with Selecting a Gaming Monitor

Hi, my kids want a new pc for christmas, so i decided to buy them parts instead, and build it together with them. This is the build I'm going for:

https://pchound.com/Y6ZNL6/

I, I mean the kids, will be using it for gaming (I like fast FPS games, they like games like PUBG and Fortnite), school stuff, powerpoint, videos, youtube, etc.

Honestly, there seem to be quite a few monitor options available from 4K, 1440p, g-sync, free-sync, etc. I chose the monitor in the pchound link because it was a g-sync monitor with what I understand a quick response time and I can get it at Walmart for 299.99 (pchound doesn't have that option)

I'm thinking my budget for a monitor will be between 300-400, but preferably at or under 350.

Adding all these options together, monitors can get quite expensive. I'm thinking I want minimum of a 24" monitor with g-sync, 1440p, and a 1 ms or less response time.

Some question and concernsi have are is g-sync actually needed? This option alone seems to up the monitor price considerably. Also, after this PC is built, I don't plan on upgrading it for a while, and I worry that as a couple years pass, I won't be able to play games at 1440p. Will this be a big problem if I have to lower resolution in the future for gaming?

So in addition to some questions and concerns, does anyone have any good monitor recommendations?

Thanks in advance.

That's a pretty amazing build for your 'kids'.

I think that monitor is a pretty good choice, especially if you can get it at 300.

I personally advocate for 2560x1440 gaming at 144hz, and I think the 2080 would do that well, but it's really up to you/them. The extra res IMO will help with school stuff, more real estate to work with, can have 2 documents open easily side by side, etc. But I believe this type of monitor takes it out of your budget.

Thanks for the reply, yeah, I originally selected the monitor due to the price point, g-sync and response time. Additionally, reviews were pretty good for it. However, after continued research on displays and things like 4K gaming and how going from 1080p to 1440p is night and day, I started to figure if I’m going to spend the cash on a 2080, maybe I should take advantage of higher gaming resolutions.

So how do you feel about g-sync? Is this something I should definitely look for as a feature? Also, how about the future, say 2-3 years down the road. Will I have to constantly upgrade my gfx to use a 1440p monitor, or is lower resolution to play newer games in the future an option? I guess I can do what I’ve always done in the past as my hardware ages. Play at 1440p, but lower other graphics options within the games.

Thanks again.

As far as Gsync goes, does tearing when the screen updates mid frame bother you or your kids? Do you use vsync to prevent it?

I have a 60hz gsync monitor, but never noticed tearing while I game, and never saw a value to turning on vsync to make it go away. En/Disabling Gsync has had zero perceivable affect on my gaming experience; and isn't something I'd pay extra for in the future.

If you're pegging 60frames with your hardware, you won't really notice G-Sync.

OP, if you go with a higher refresh rate monitor you'll notice the G-Sync. I don't think you'll need to upgrade that often at 1440p144hz. If anything you may need to turn some graphics settings down 1-2 notches in future titles, but I doubt you'd lose any actual noticeable clarity or that games won't look as good.

I did my A/B testing with settings that had my average FPS in the 45-70 range with bursts of too much stuff at once dropping it to around 20.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I think I do want g-sync. I've def noticed screen tearing in the past. Thanks for the link Subserok, the monitor looks solid, but it doesn't have 1ms response time. Would that be an issue?

I'm compromising on size a bit, I would of liked a 27" screen, but I found this monitor around my price point. It has the stuff I want, 1440p, g-sync, 1ms response.

What do you think o the monitor in the link?

Thanks again.
