Apple Revitalizes the iPad Lineup and Announces New Mac Mini and MacBook Air

Well that's nitpicking a 12" 1TB ssd tablet, which is going to be ridiculous priced anyway, Apple or not.

What?....too cheap?

Far too cheap. How am I suppose to perform my obeisance to the Great Cult of Apple if they aren't taking all my money? I demand $19,000 tablets!!! $500 dongles!! Recurring extended warranty charges!!!!!!!!!!! Just charge me $4.95 a minute for tech support at least. Please. Please oh great and mighty Apple. I'm bent over and ready for you -- no lube -- just the way Tim likes it. TAKE ME.

Man ... their prices just keep going up across the entire lineup. I remember one time in an interview Phil Schiller asked why their crap is so expensive. He said people are “paying for the experience.” I think that about sums up Apple these days.

Compared it to surface pro prices... its more than reasonable

I actually have a stronger desire, much stronger, to buy a 15" surface book 2 with GTX 1060 than I would with a macbook air.

At least I can game on the damn thing.

BAM. I love my SB2! I purchased a refurb model, same warranty and saved a bunch. LOVE IT. Runs all of my games and 3dmark puts it above the GTX970 performance. It's fast and I have no throttling issues.

Name another device that is the same size and offers 10GBe ethernet?
I didn't realize 10GBe was a $799 priority. But please - be my guest. The Apple RDF is strong in this thread.

Update - just checked the Apple website. The 10GBe option is an additional $100, so that will actually be $899. Enjoy.

799 is a bit hard to swallow for the entry level ipp. i think i paid 649 for my 10.5 last year. it still works as well as it did when i purchased it. so i am skipping this shiny new object.

What do you mean "it"? I'm referring to their entire line of products ... which ... if you have been following them ... have been continuously going up.
If you follow the economy that’s a trend that we call inflation.

Most things cost more than 20 years ago Gramps... except Jack in the Box tacos. They’re still 2/.99.

So much apple butthurt on here that some can't see straight.

Go find me a comparable laptop for significantly less. That would be an Asus Zenbook or dell XPS. They are just as expensive.

Its not overpriced nor is it some cult. I hate to break it to you but IRL people generally do not care about your Laptop/tablet/Phone manufacturer. Only in [H] fantasy land does this exist.

Look I enjoy Apples ecosystem as much as anyone but their price increases have nothing to do with inflation.

They have something like a 60-70% profit margin, those increases in cost are things like the T2 chips and other new parts with the R&D to go with putting it in even smaller packages.

If Apple lowered their profit margin to something like 20-30% you’d be able to get an iPhone XS Max for 849.99 but they aren’t a trillion dollar company for nothing.

Uh, any thin client that has an expansion slot for a pci-e card? As mentioned earlier, the minimum price with 10GB is $899 with an i3 chip. Yes, it might win out in for smallest size but there are plenty of intel nuc setups already out there. If you really need 10gb networking in rj45 format that desperately, why are you using a mini pc machine windows, linux or mac with a mere 128gb drive?

The mac mini is tolerable at $500-600 base but not by much. 8gb ram and 128gb ssd for $799 is a joke though. This isn't 5 years ago when I picked up my mac mini for $499 (with i5 not an i3) and the nuc sized designs were just slowly showing up. Can we even replace the ssd ourselves? You could on the old ones. I'm sure as hell not interested in paying $200 to upgrade to 256gb (which are $100 retail now). At that stage, as per usual the upsell to the i5 at 1099 is all but assured. They've probably soldered the fucking ram and the ssd's to the mobo. God help you if the thing dies on you.

Yup, looks like memory is so-dimm but not easily replaceable by user, only techs. Storage is likely not upgradable after purchase. Gotta keep people in their apple genius tech support ghetto er walled garden of peace and wonderment.

I find this forum can't handle Apple products. It's like it blows some [H] peoples' minds. I found it interesting discussing their processors. I'm a big PC guy myself but my inner geek can't help but revel at what Apple has done, particularly in terms of their CPUs. For my phone to have a CPU that's comparable to my old Haswell i5 4690k...it blows my mind. How people can't show Apple some much deserved respect and admiration is completely beyond me.

Oh, you iphone can play Crysis? (y):woot:

The only recent thing I've seen from Apple that's a decent value is the $300 or less "2018" Ipad.

I hope Apple moves to the AXX line for their new Macs tbh. I actually want to see what a full size A12X could do. You figure you increase the size 8x that was be a monster CPU if tailored to MacOS.

Guys here are the Geekbench results for the new Apple A12X processor:

https://browser.geekbench.com/v4/cpu/10571033

4987 single core, 17928 multi core. Barely slower than a full blown desktop i5 8600K processor with six cores.

I'm starting to think x86 may be dead. Apple is killing it. I can't wait to see what they come out with in 2020.

I bought an iPod Mini back in 2004 or so. It was fine. But iTunes on Windows XP was a pain in the ass. I still have the Mini, and it still holds a charge. Good hardware, horrible company.

I wish the MS Zune had worked out.

I miss using the Zune HD...

News flash: you just deployed your reality distortion bubble. If you somehow don't believe quarterly reports from Apple about increasing margins (with no mention of decreasing overhead, because they actually increased, which means they simply charge more for everything) that they just had today, well you can also look at historical data.

Inflation has only hit 3% once since 2008, so any claims of inflation is laughable (even if it was 3% every year or even DOUBLE that, the numbers below would not be in your favor even remotely).

The iPhone 5 back in 2012* was $650 for their cheapest flagship model. Cheapest flagship Xs today is $1000. Inflation would bring $650 to about $724, which isn't even as expensive as the Xr, the supposed "budget" line.

Likewise in 2012*, the MBP 15" started at $1800, while the 2018 it is $2400. Inflation would bring it up to about $1964, which is far closer to the price of their 13" 2018. (And of course the 2012 13" was $1200, or $1310 today, while the starting price of a 2018 13" is $1800, the same starting price as their 2012 15" MBP.)

So you apparently neither follow the economy in a countrywide sense nor in a company-wide, shareholder sense.

*Note I use a lot of 2012 data because I happened to be gifting a lot of apple stuff that year, and the prices were familiar to me, but feel free to google it to double check my work.

Unfortunately simply charging more for everything across the board is a strategy that has actually worked out for them, as we have found from their 3rd quarter results.

Never had a problem on any other device... including iphones.
Unfortunate since my GF now really wants a MBP because she thinks she'll have fewer malware problems and her last outbreak was due to exactly that; shady streaming sites.

Apple generally makes good hardware even if priced a bit high

Their new MBP keyboards seem to be against this reputation as well. Even if the whole dust failure fiasco wasn't a thing, it would still be a shitty keyboard.

Ever since they started jerking off to scissors switches this has been a problem really. I used to have multiple of the first gen scissor switch desktop keyboards and the keys wouldn't have the same sensitivity, no matter how many times I exchanged them. Spacebar was particularly annoying.

Very disappointing considering they used to have pretty much the best bundled keyboards with their systems out of any of the big OEMs for years/decades.
