Earlier this month, Microsoft announced Project xCloud, a cloud-based Xbox game-streaming technology that would bring the console experience to smartphones and other mobile devices. Being that touch controls aren’t optimal for most titles, Microsoft Research some years ago begun exploring versions of the Xbox controller specifically designed for mobile gaming. These prototypes may now be seen in newly released papers.

Microsoft built the prototypes out of foam and then had them 3D printed, based on conceptual renders. The work was carried out quite a while ago, back in 2014, but it seems Microsoft Research has resurfaced their efforts recently, noting the recent success of the Nintendo Switch. While this research may be far away from turning into an actual product, it's pretty imperative that Microsoft takes a serious role in exploring how it can improve the way Xbox games will handle on a mobile device to help take Project xCloud mainstream.

I'd buy it if they do it right.
They might want some way to clamp both together to hug the device tho.
Going to eat into screen space for "bezel-less" users. lol

How about just allow their current shit to use Bluetooth with phones.

Seems a much simpler solution than a weird plastic dongle that may or may not have compatibility issues with various phones.

I've tried getting a Wiimote to work with my son's phone and it's F*in impossible, lol!

I’ve seen it done but it’s effectively unsupported and can be a chore yeah, but with perhaps actual manufacturer support it could be simple.

There have been similar sandwich controllers for the iPhone, at least. They worked great - on phones that supported them and games too. I think they fell out of favor because up until recently phones have been changing shapes and sizes fairly dramatically. Now that everything seems to be setting around the current slab designs hopefully stuff like this will really take off for once!

the ability to use a wiimote got broken somewhere right around/after BT4.0. the only way you can do it is to root your device and downgrade your BT to a compatible version which also then means alternative rom that would even allow that would be needed too. its soooooooooooo not worth all the hassle to make it actually work.

Let me stop you right there Microsoft. A 6 inch screen and shitty earbuds is not close the experience of a home console.

odd, the current controllers are already blue tooth so why redesign them?

I bought a generic thing like this and it looked good but sucked in reality.

Maybe there will be some Xbox-branded value priced Surfaces that will bundle with these controllers.

Could be a Switch-like device.

Bought a Mocute 54 last year, pretty crappy, only good for non-action type of games like RPGs.
D-pad is all seperate buttons and have a sharp edge on them making it hard to glide your thumb along.
Action buttons are placed too close the the right stick causing you to bump into it.
The L2 and R2 are fake analog triggers that are only digital on/off.
The clamp only has 3 positions, closed, 90(useless), and 135-ish degrees, no 180.
