Apple has successfully blocked the "GrayKey" hack that allowed law enforcement and governments around the world unfettered access to passcodes on Apple devices running iOS. Devices running iOS 12 and above can only have metadata such as file structure and unencrypted files accessed by Grayshift technology. GrayKey used brute force techniques and circumvented Apple's block on repeat guesses.

Police officer Captain John Sherwin of the Rochester Police Department in Minnesota said of the claim iOS 12 was preventing GrayKey from unlocking iPhones: "That's a fairly accurate assessment as to what we have experienced. "Give it time and I am sure a 'workaround' will be developed ... and then the cycle will repeat. Someone is always building a better mousetrap, whether it's Apple or someone trying to defeat device security."

Can't they just force the suspect to look at the phone and use Face ID to unlock it now?

Having an iPhone X I find the feature "Require Attention for Face ID” both great and annoying. For instances I need to quickly glance at my phone it won’t unlock, but at the same time I appreciate it.

can they PHYSICALLY do that? yes.
do they need a warrant in order to do that? maybe... not really a settled question currently

Well a judge already ruled it was OK to force a person to put his finger on the phone to unlock it so this isn't far behind. Don't know where that case stands in the land of appellate court though, or if it even got appealed.

Good!
Its every good citizens duty to fight the criminal behavior of rouge states like the USA, Russia, NK, Iran, China, Turkey, and similar collections of lowlife scumbags.

If you spam the power button five times in a row while handing an iPhone over to the cops, you need to put in your numeric password again before using Face ID. This way they can’t unlock the phone by putting it on front of your face. This also applies to Touch ID for phones with that feature.

As much as people bash on Apple, they are one of the few companies actively trying to protect user data and keep the government out of your shit.

//Update: Apparently if you use Face ID, the button combo is to hold down one of the volume buttons and power.

Face unlock seem flawed to me, so the other person can just get your phone, hold it towards you and say " is this your phone" and the phone go BONG ( i assume ) and unlock.
I would so love to fly to the USA with 256 Gb of garbled junk data encrypted on my phone, then when forced to unlock have a good grin at the officers face when he look at 256 Gb of garbage.

If people are just stealing your phone out of your hands you have other issues.

hmm, i just did an update to my work iphone the other day and now i have to unlock it before it can be read when plugging it into my car, i use it solely for audiobooks and podcasts for my LONG daily commute.

You can fix this if it annoys you:

Turn it ON so USB works all of the time.

I just tried it, pushed it about 20 times didn't work.

tap and hold both the power button and the volume up (or down) buttons together for a few seconds. That will disabled face ID and ask for your password

Yes i will have to buy a new cheap phone, needless to say i dont have any personal things on my phone, the 10 or so peoples numbers i have are probably the most personal.
Would never use google pay ASO or put any credit information on my phone, so as you can guess i can not buy anything on the google store.
And NFC,,,,,, O hell no, hell even my visa card i have drilled out the RFID chip,,, and i never use that visa card in a store.
So when cash are finally banned, i will have to take a big old bite of a scatter gun. :)

yes, A judge in a district court.
this does not make it constitutional everywhere- SCOTUS needs to weigh in on it and i dont know if they have accepted to hear that case or not. and there were a few cases like that where it was ruled both for and against in various districts but i cant remember where they were off the top of my head.

Apple requires a pin if you restart the phone too, its fairly quick and easy. Will also clear your app history.
