Google Pixel 3

Swift Black theme on the 3 XL is a God send

Now in all the System and Google apps, you can't even tell there's a notch. Everything has a beautiful silky black look, and you just see the time in upper left and network info in upper right, and no idea there's even a notch in the middle as everything is black which totally hides the notch completely, but it's nice to see that info in the upper corners, makes the screen look like it goes all the way to the edge.

Look it up in the Play Store "Swift Black Substratum Theme"

I thought Pie disabled Substratum themes? Or did you root? I would like to theme my 2 XL still if I can, but never tried.

I'm rooted on my 3 XL.

and I have to admit the Dark theme on this phone is an absolute game-changer everything is just so much easier on the eyes and pleasing to look at when you get a phone call to see that dark screen instead of the blinding White and just throughout the system text notifications come in dark not white it just makes the phone like so much cooler

I had an interesting thing last night.
I sat the phone on the stand when I went to bed, it was at 39%. The big circle thing came up briefly then the lock screen with shortcuts came up, said fast charging 39% etc.
I woke up this morning before the alarm went off... the sunrise thing didn't happen and the bottom said fast charging 9%.
So that's a thing. Saturday night it worked normally (only used the stand the two nights). I did swap the cable with the standard pixel usb c cable yesterday because the stand one is longer and not necessary... I can't imagine that is what did it, but I swapped it back this morning since that was the only variable.

I tried Substratum on my 2XL and it didn't work at all. :(

Are you rooted ? And if on Pie it's a 2 step process now. First build it and reboot, then you have to go back into Sub and enable it.

Wasn't like that before, but since Android 9, that's the only way Substratum works

I was on Oreo when I tried it. I was rooted, but went back to stock after it made my phone go goofy on me.

X-Level just came out with their Pixel 3 XL case. This was hands down the #1 case I had for my 2 XL, and had a ton of different cases. This X-Level case is super grippy almost sticky feeling in a good way, it's not slippery at all. It's very thin, but still protects the camera, and just barely has a top lip to go above the screen and protect it if laid flat down. I highly recommend.

Are you sure that case protects the screen?

Going with Dbrand again. I like just a skin and I really like this company.
I use one of their skins on my Dell laptop. I also joined their Kickstarter project for their Grip case. It's a great case. I use it whenever I'm outdoors like the beach, fishing, rock climbing, etc. It's fully compatible with Dbrand's skins, too.

This sort of BS means I'll just hang on to the Pixel 2 XL as long as I can and hope OnePlus will be a feasible choice by the time I need a replacement. Google needs to learn that being consumer-unfriendly like this is not acceptable.

There's also all sort of memory management problems with the Pixel 3, apps getting killed more often than on the Pixel 2. If Google isn't able to competently program this, then they should have spared a couple dollars profit on their $1000 phone and put in 6GB of RAM.

The memory management seems to be very hit or miss. Mine doesn't do it like I've seen (I can have about 5 to six apps loaded and cached), though there are videos showing a max at 3.

The wireless charging limitation is bs though. I'm not sure if it's a big issue, practically, but it's a crappy move.

Saw this and just laughed. Google and Samsung always try to make fun of Apple but always copy Apple anyways. But at least Apple hasn't done this yet. I really like the Camera software on the Pixel though, I'll give them that.

Loving my phone, no complaints. As for the W.C. thing Google announced it is working with companies to bring the fast charge to other chargers. Personally I never got the hard-on for wireless charging, I mean it takes one sec to plug in or take out your charger cord.

I personally would only use it in my car. Thats where wireless charging is super useful. In my office and at home I would rather plug it in.

So I was browsing an article on auto traders website and with no warning the phone froze solid. No control at all, bottom buttons, power and volume buttons, finger sensor all inop, and plugging in did not start it charging. Ultimately holding the power button for literally about thirty seconds forced a shutdown.

Perhaps ram related like everyone was crying about, although I've run a dozen apps at once without any restarting etc like people were saying would happen by app 3.
So I dunno. Early adopters, yay.

Wow... Google went proprietary. After making a big boohoo about Qualcomm's QC not being an open standard and going with USB-PD, they now create their own proprietary contact wireless charging standard. While I haven't supported contact wireless charging because it's slower than wired and the energy efficiency is questionable, this is more of a philosophical thing. It's like Microsoft is the least "evil" company right now.

Google is trying more and more to be like Apple, but even Apple hasn’t made a proprietary wireless charging method...yet.

Therein lies the irony of the Apple vs Android, my daddy can beat up your daddy, debate. They've become much more alike than different over the years.

Hopefully it doesn't take them ten years or whatever to learn from their mistake like Apple did with the wired charging format.

Zing.

Lightning cable predated USB-C by quite a bit. And honestly, I don't blame Apple for not going with micro-USB and coming up with Lightning. I had too many micro-USB cables to fail, including one device (fortunately not a smartphone) to have the port failed. MicroUSB is shitty. I do wish Apple flip to USB-C ASAP, but I wouldn't say Lightning over micro-USB is a mistake at all.

The point being its fair game, I didn't say anything about USB-C. To this day I still hear people bitch when they can't find a apple connector'd charger to use.

It's funny how OnePlus have taken the lead on better performing stock Android phones.

Clearly the 6T will be a smoother more fluid operating phone compared to the Pixel 3. Yet this is Google's thing, they created Android, they make vanilla Android. And they charge a much higher price for their Pixel vs a OnePlus, yet somehow OnePlus is besting them on developing a smoother better performing phone.

It's not rocket science what OPO is doing, Google can easily match and beat them in development of the Pixel OS, I just don't know why they aren't ?

Basically the OnePlus phones have taken over the old Nexus spot, and doing better at then Google did. And now Google can't even make their $900 flagship as smooth and fast as a $550 phone.

I'm thinking and hoping the Pixel 4 line will be a major jump for them. I think that will be the full HTC design team and also Android Q will be better and the Snapdragon 855 is supposed to be a major new processor. Plus all the criticism Google's getting on the Pixel 3, I expect next year's phones to be night and day better.

I'll be ordering a 6T just to see how that on-screen scanner works. Not planning on keeping it unless it really blows my mind.

According to the Verge Huawei Mate 20 Pro has iPhone like smoothness and performance while having really impressive battery life. Google doesn't sell Pixel here so the only real pure Android choice would be Nokia. OnePlus 6T will be nice but Huawei managed to make rather impressive SoC. To me Pixel 3 phones are overpriced.

Well now I'm irritated. My OtterBox showed up today. It's nice. I usually get the commuters but all they had was defender which I've had before twice... My only gripe was the stupid plastic screen, and the pixel 3 defender does not have the screen/lense, so yay right?
It fucking pops the glass protector off because they occupy the same space for like 0.1mm.

This is the worst thing to happen to me today, so I guess that's good. But for now, I am running with no screen protector, something I haven't done in years and years. I'll have to look for something thinner I guess.

So anyway, heads up to anyone looking at the new OtterBox, it conflicts with the tempered glass protectors.

Micro usb is a horrible and cheap connector. Mini will still be my favorite with the lightning behind that.

You're attacking Apple for using the proprietary charging cable that at its time of "invention" was quite necessary compared to the unreliability of micro-USB's. Where as Google made an unnecessary proprietary contact wireless charging license that improves on nothing other than more money for Google. How is this the same?

Not only that it improved upon the data and power delivery capability while being omnidirectional plug. Proprietary but still an improvement over micro usb considerably.

Damn, such butt hurt. You need to chill the fuck out and realize it is just a god damn phone. Jesus.

Edit: And just for clarity I didn't say anything about lightning either, so like the USB-C comments you are putting words in my mouth. You shouldn't do that.

Apple has a history of proprietary decisions where you buy theirs, buy certified 3rd party cables, or buy garbage and hope for the best (literally, exactly the same thing versus this wireless, authorized accessories, or less functional non certified chargers). Love Apple all you want, that fact does not change that Apple loves proprietary solutions be it lightning, 30 pin, firewire or any of the ridiculous Mac cables. If you can't grasp that I am sorry.

Typically Apple will make a proprietary solution if it doesn’t meet their standard or needs. Kind of opening up the opportunity to make something of their own. As long as it’s an improvement there isn’t and isn’t locked out from third party OEMs I don’t see a problem with anyone doing it. Most of apples proprietary connectors came at a time when bandwidth didn’t meet their spec, which is why we got FireWire. Too funny though, when USB outpaced it it almost disappeared instantly, but the lightning port still rocks on even when USB3.1 surpassed it. Wonder if Apple will eventually make a USB-C iPhone?

Oh yeah I totally get that. I mean I'm not ragging on Apple for doing what they do. I just thought the parallel was funny.

I personally don't like the practice, even if for the greater good. I always relate that type of behavior to the Sony marketing viewpoint that destroyed betamax :D

I'm interested in how you're drawing "parallels"

30 pin come from a time when there are no standard ports for PDAs and music devices

FireWire is an IEEE standard... And what Trimlock said.

And lightning... No need to say more.

How is this parallel again? All I'm saying is Google's proprietary charging is BS, and yet you're saying so did Apple without any logical reasoning.

I'm on an Essential Phone. So I totally love Apple?!?

I've owned 150+ phones in the past decade or so, with micro-USB on nearly all of them save for 3-4 with USB-C (my current V20 for example), and I've owned dozens and dozens of micro-USB cables numbering into the low hundreds and out of all that hardware, connecting and disconnecting frequently, messing around with flashing ROMs and wiping devices and moving data around and all that activity with so many devices and cables, I've only had one micro-USB cable fail on me and not one micro-USB port/connector on a device fail, not one.

I think the fact that people just don't take care of their shit is the more likely reason if they have problems with that connector. :)

I hadn't looked at this thread in a while and I see activity all the time, figured I'd see people raving about the Night Sight camera stuff now that it's been "outed" by someone over at XDA, and I check in and you're all bitching about charging and data connectors? Really? :D

Sony was a prime example of proprietary for the sake of proprietary, look at their sd cards! lol

And now Huawei is going to attempt something proprietary with that new "Nano Memory" SD card they've designed and it'll backfire right in their faces.
