Hellgate launched back in November 2007 however, it struggled to make money from the get-go, with publisher Namco pulling the plug in February 2009...South Korean distributor Hanbitsoft then secured the worldwide publishing rights back in January 2010 and set to work on a relaunch called Hellgate: Resurrection

According to its description on Steam, this version of Hellgate is called Hellgate Global, which includes a Tokyo expansion...

Oh gads.. I remember that game. The "single player" was exactly like playing an asian MMO, just without any other players. (go kill <x> of mob <y>, go fetch <x> drops from mob <y>)

Boring as heck

So many memories... mostly good ones, too. Got an armor plate named after me, lol

I remember enjoying the game, but I do not remember any reason that I should have enjoyed it.

Lol yeah that sounds about right. It had a cool concept and some neat classes and weapons, but was really repetitive. It's the kind of game that needed a big overhaul like Diablo3 eventually got with 2.0. And no monthly fee, obviously.

Omg... that game. I remember it went live, I spent the 10-15 minutes during the intro, and promptly got stuck in the landscape outside the first exit. There was no "stuck" function at the time, and I said fuck it. Never played it again.

I might still have a copy of it in my CD binder. From what I remember of it, it was Borderlands before there was a Borderlands.

2007? Wow, I thought it was a good bit older than that... I remember having fun playing this in co-op with friends, but I don't think we ever finished it. I must have put a good 50+ hours into it before getting tired of it.

I have Hellgate on DVD somewhere - think that might have been the last game I ever bought on a disk instead of Steam.

Yeah I bought the Collectors Edition of this game. Proud to say that I finished it.

It was a decent attempt for the Diablo team, but it got far to repetitive towards the end although I did find myself enjoying the game, I really liked the crafting. It really felt like Diablo with guns & I was ok with that. Id play it again if the price was right.

I've still got my CE box on the shelf.

I'd give it another go if the price was right.

It was more fun than the hater make it sound like, but it was only a good beginning. I got grindy after a while...

this... and the sheer amount of baddies coming at you all at once in some areas was pretty exciting . . . but even with the random tunnel generator it got grindy for sure.

One of the reasons it go so "Grindy" is that they used the same color pallet and tile sets over and over and over. It made it very dull.

I enjoyed the original game, but it was completely different when I played the Hanbitsoft version. They had removed the great graphics and it was full of quests with broken english. I remember playing for about 30 minutes before giving up. I'll bet this version is the same or similar, just cashing in on the Hellgate name.

The original had a lot of potential. I notice that certain themes from that game have been picked up by others along the way.

I friggin LOVED this game, but the devs totally weren't up to par to keep it going. I vividly remember it having some ridiculous memory leak problems. If the devs had more funding, or were just better (who knows which), and could've varied the environments more and fixed the performance issues I would prolly still be playing the game. They did end up making the game a standalone for anyone that bought it so you don't have to log in or whatever I think.

I just looked and I still have the box and discs for this.

Yep, ironically I loaded it back up a few months back and played through about half the game before I got bored. It was a lot of fun and when the game came out, the graphics were very nice. I had tons of screenshots of my characters in various armor sets and colors. There are plenty of RPG's and MMO's that should adopt some of the customization options the game had.

I seem to remember to studio that made this going bankrupt and releasing it basically unfinished.

I remember coming REAL close to buying one of the "Lifetime Memberships" but luckily I backed out. lol I think they shut it down about a year after that. I had already given up on it due to some previously mentioned issues with the game (so repetitious) any how.

I'm absolutely excited in this. The only problems with the original release was a low amount of content and balance between classes. both fixable.

screenshots don't look too good...

and why is this on greenlight? if you make a *real* game you can just sell it on steam directly

And also; the game is 'made', it just needs to be... I don't know what to call it, re-localized? Un-translated? Given to a programming team with some kind of skill and drive?

I bought the collector's edition & I was a bit disappointed. It was way too "grindy" as revenant pointed out & I hate repetition to the Nth degree. If they had focused on story rather than procedurally generated randomness (madness), I would've been far happier with it.

They had a series of books which were quite good. There was great potential there but they just got over their heads. They lacked long term funding, and were sore pressed to release early. They had a lot of turnover in several departments and lost focus which also led to some half-assed shenagigans. They really felt they could fix the game once it was released but the amount of hype it got and the let down of not meeting that hype made this one short lived game.

I liked this game. Classes were neat, had some cool weapons, also I liked the random 3d dungeons.

Played it back at Games Convention 2007 (called gamescom now) and thought it was utter shit. You can't get pass a 10cm ledge. Horribly slow and clunky. Avoid if you're into shooters.

Well, technically I believe it was classified as an "action RPG" or something like that.... ;)

So no, I wouldnt expect someone looking for an FPS would find it appealing in a lot of ways.

Thought the idea had potential and liked the lore of the game.
I was in the beta and the devs didn't address a lot of the issues the players were bringing up.
Had no confidence in them so canceled my order about a week before it was released.

If they actually fixed some of the bugs, gave it some updates, graphics, and it was cheap I'd look at it again.

I had some fun in the beta but it got so repetitive so quickly... It felt too confined. Though it was a cool idea though and I am interested to see how they bring this back, what changes have been made, etc..

I recall being on IRC and getting a couple of beta Mythos invites from one of the devs....

Good times.

Shame the game was such a let-down. (Hellgate obv.. Mythos never saw the light of day)

This was a decent game. My friends and I used to play it all the time. I actually beat it. Not bad, but the environments got a little boring.

.....It was better than Diablo 3.

I remember this game. At the time I loved the cinematic opening. Hasn't aged so well though....

It definitely wasn't/isn't better than Diablo 3 by a longshot. Hellgate London was riddled with bugs, memory leaks, and they would just slap new colors on levels and call it a new area.

That being said, I think Hellgate was my biggest let down in gaming. Like ... ever. Everything about the premise was amazing, they just couldn't execute it.
