There is a small group of independent tech journalists that go way back. Ryan Shrout and I are two of the guys that are still on that very small and dwindling list. Today, Ryan is letting us know that he is moving on to his next challenge in life, and that challenge will be performing the duties of Intel's Chief Performance Strategist. That sounds like a job that Ryan is extremely well cut out for. We wish him well. Have no fear however, as Ken, Allyn, Josh, Jeremy, and the rest of the crew will be manning the PCPer helm as Ryan steps down. I will be tuning in tonight for the PCPer Podcast live filming at 9pm CDT and hitting up the chat room for sure.

Today marks the beginning of a second journey, one that I didn’t know would ever come. I have accepted a role at Intel as the company’s Chief Performance Strategist. In this capacity, I will help influence and drive performance leadership across Intel’s product portfolio. My first day will be in mid to late November. It is a challenge that I am looking forward to pursuing and an opportunity to catalyze Intel’s leadership even further.

Wow, a bit shocking, been following them for a long time now, practically neighbors, PCPer is just across the river from us here in Cincinnati. Best of luck to ya Ryan, but now who's gonna keep Josh on his leash?

welp rip pcper.
Not so sure about that. Ryan has been removed from a lot of involvement over there for well over a year now. He is leaving PCPer in good hands. I know Allyn and Ken are full time there, so it will be up to them to lead. They are very smart guys and capable of pulling it off if they truly want to.

Didn't it start as "amdforums.com"?? Same guy?

Unexpected in that sense. (traitor!)

Been reading PCPer for years. It's sad to see him move on but sometimes change is for the best. I wish Ryan luck in this next chapter and hope PCPer continues with the quality hardware journalism I have come to expect from them.

Didn't know there was a link.. bit of nostalgia seeing that url again!

Sounds like it'll be a hard role with a terrible 10nm and rapidly dating 14nm portfolio to deal with. Good luck, Ryan!
Toms Hardware threatened to sue AMDMB/Ryan back in 2003. The lawsuit was very likely to put Ryan out of business. I saw this happening and knew it was total BS. I paid my lawyers to come to Ryan's defense, and back THG off of him. And it worked. So yeah, a lot of nostalgia here with me as well. Ryan has been a great friend to me for 15 years. I am 100% behind his move and going to Intel.

I've been listening to their podcasts religiously for years. I travel for work quite a bit and always make sure I have the latest podcast ready for my trips.

It's a bummer to see Ryan go.

It's interesting that both Ryan and Anand went on to larger roles elsewhere. Though not surprising.

Best of luck to Ryan!

I had the feeling something was going on there as Ryan was absent from some of the podcasts and mailbags for a while now and the reasons given by the others were as vague as possible.

I do enjoy their podcasts and mailbags, and the odd review, hope it works out for Pcper.

I hope he doesn't lose his integrity over there! Best of luck to him. (y)

You are reading a bit much into that. Ryan has been busy working for his new business Shrout Research in the analyst realm for quite a while. That is where most of his PCPer time has gone.

NKY native and Cincy resident here too. Best of luck to him on this new adventure. I have always respected their work.

I'm hoping one day somebody writes up a biography about Kyle and [H]. I bet there'd be some interesting shenanigans to read there.

Ryan threw some great hardware giveaways at Quakecon, and PCper is a site that has a well balanced staff. I don't see them going the way of Anandtech.

Everyone needs to change things up. Doing the same job for over a decade is a long time indeed, and his resume is basically the business he ran.

I haven't been reading Anandtech much since Anand left. Has it really gone downhill that bad?

I understand that people can't make a lifelong living running a small site, and these types of consulting and employment arrangements might be necessary, but at the same time I can't help but be sketched out a bit by it. How many punches are pulled, and how much honesty in reviews is silenced because these guys don't kill off their chances to work for the big guys some day?

It's a lot like how how many Goldman Sachs employees wind up working at the treasury, and Comcast and Verizon lobbyists wind up working at the FCC and vice versa. It does feel a lot like conflict of interest.

That's one of the reasons I keep coming back here, as Kyle never lets himself be muzzled!

I mean, it's less about running a small site that's independent reporting. It's more about running a small business just in general. It's not a stable life. And if you run it well, that small business can basically be your resume. For Ryan I'm sure (And Kyle if it ever came to that), Pcper.com *is* his resume.

A place like Intel, who probably desperately needs someone who's actually in touch with the kind of crowd that Ryan is immersed in, he's perfect to help them. And for Ryan, well there's just something to be said for knowing exactly how much you're going to be getting paid every month. And maybe even have vacation time.

And as for Anandtech...when Anand left their articles dropped in quality IMO for quite a long time, and their articles in general were few and far between. Some phone reviews would come out like 8 months after a phone is released. I never go to Anandtech anymore just because there's just simply nothing to read.

I'm hoping this move will help Intel improve something ... from watching all of the PCPER webcasts - while I didn't always agree with everything those guys say - Ryan always seemed to be a straight shooter and that's respect and goodwill that Intel is getting by hiring him, at least in the short term.

We'll see if they actually listen to / execute what advice he has to offer them.

Pardon my ignorance but what does "performance strategist" actually mean?

I'm not convinced Intel really needs help improving their designs. They do a great job in that regard. No one does it better.

They have just been held back by their 10nm manufacturing process which was supposed to go into production in 2015...

While their CPU's generation over generation IPC/Clock gains have been less than exciting over the last few years, I still think it's pretty impressive what they have been able to do while stuck on the same 14nm manufacturing process for all this time.

I mean, if you think of it, everything since Broadwell (except for some low volume, low power 10nm chips only sold in China) has been 14nm, yet they have still pulled off slow by steady performance increases through nothing but process maturity and same node design optimizations.

I'm no fan of Intel as a company, but that is damned impressive. Their IC design engineering talent is second to none.

Chief Performance Strategist? Is he going to be doing Intel's benchmarking now instead of (Un)Principled Technologies? :D

Yeah I'm trying to figure out what kind of job this is exactly. It sounds like some made up title specifically for his role. In any case, hope he enjoys the new job and Intel perks.

Maybe they need someone who is in touch with the community to help them fine tune and review their messaging around performance, so they stop embarrassing themselves with chiller cooler demo units and misleading (intentionally or not) performance figures.

:DAre we allowed to still troll....i mean make interesting.....the podcasts

I have always liked Ryan and consider him part of the old trusted review cadre that [H] and a few others fall into. Congrats to Ryan! Excited to hear about whatever his new job is! :)

Ryan is also the reason I will never give AdordedTV (Jim) another click. Jim's behavior with Ryan, whether Jim had valid points or not, was out of line and typical of Jim's behavior. Jim's videos and emails about and to Ryan/PCPer was the last draw.

It escapes me why all of these website people jump ship (better pay day for sure). But Him , Anand &Scott (many others?).
Do what exactly, better cater their target audience for their PC hardware?
I mean there was a flood of people going to AMD but that didn't strike me as something that would get the message across to the consumer.

Do you know how hard it is to make an honest living in this business now? When 70%+ of your readers block your ads, how are your supposed to make a living and pay all your editors?
