MULLVAD VPN is fully sponsoring HardForum's operational cost for a month. MULLVAD VPN wants to share its steps to online privacy.

Steps towards online privacy

1. Use a VPN service like Mullvad.

2. Use Firefox and the Privacy Window feature.

3. Install plugins to improve your privacy like HTTPS Everywhere, uBlock Origin, Privacy Badger, Cookie AutoDelete, and Disable WebRTC.

4. Use this page to double-check your online connection.

5. Read more about changing your online habits in order to give you more privacy.

Not using a VPN? Give Mullvad a try. Your new account will come with three free hours.

Used Mullvad for years.
Top service, amazing personal support with an excellent, secure and highly encrypted no-log VPN product. I 100% recommend them and thank Mullvad for sponsoring [H].

Can setup my RT-AC68U to use OpenVPN with Mullvad? I may give it a shot. I've been using PIA for a couple years with great results but would like to support a [H] sponsor!

You can set it up on that router, however keep in mind most consumer routers running on ARM or MIPS CPUs will not perform very well when running OpenVPN, expect it to be a bottleneck if your Internet connection speed is higher than 50-80Mbit/s .

Seems to work well within my needs on PIA. Is there anything different about Mullvad? Is there a setup guide for my router available?

Depending on what you run on it you might have some more options.

If for instance you run WireGuard on your router, you would then be able to get significantly higher speeds (assuming your Internet connection is currently being CPU bottlenecked) , also you would be able to exit via other WireGuard servers if you wanted to.

Uou could have one browser that would exit via New York, and another browser that would exit via Australia.

You could also set it to use multihop with WireGuard.

We have a few guides on our website available here: https://mullvad.net/en/guides/category/connecting-routers-mullvad/ , Though for Asus routers we used the merlin firmware when writing that guide.
We are planning to refresh several of the router guides quite soon.

The WireGuard LEDE guide is available here: https://mullvad.net/en/guides/running-wireguard-router/

I have a few questions if you could indulge me... What if any packet loss, while using a torrent, is experienced when using MULLVAD and what is the total loss % of download speed when using MULLVAD? And If you could PM the cost for a year I would appreciate that.

I think that would be dependent on multiple factors, for instance the ndis6 TAP driver under windows 7 has had and still has issues, one of them being connection drops when torrenting, so our Mullvad VPN app installs the ndis5 TAP driver instead, which often performs better as well on windows7.

The total loss of speed is quite hard for us to say, PM me for an extended trial so then you can see what you get with your setup when connecting to our servers.

How are speeds? I have been using PIA for a few years now, connection speeds were always very good 150-300+ meg connections through the VPN (gigabite fiber connection). But lately the best I have been getting is ~80-90 at best and frequently getting 20-30 meg connections.. I think since linus tech tips replaced tunnel bear sponsor with PIA their servers are getting over loaded maybe, I dunno. Either way I am looking for a faster solution now.

This might be out of scope for this thread, but I have a connection that requires the use of their modem/router. I also have a router that sits behind it.

When running the VPN service on the second router would it be possible to have ports open to the outside, i.e. use a dynamic dns service to access from outside the network.
