Computer Gaming World

I have a SHIT-TON of old CGW's at my moms house in a bigass rubbermaid container.

('96-'04 kinda stuff)

I'm going over there for her bday friday.

Obligatory pics incoming.

Same here. My wife was getting on me about the multiple bins of CGW and Boot/Maximum PC dating back to the mid 90's. I finally did get rid of them except for the ones which had a Warcraft/ World of Warcraft cover. I posted a picture of each of them in Blizzard's forums. I received numerous offers from other players wanting to buy them off me. I refused though. That is why I kept them in the first place.

Man of my word....

(the mag that's open is the oldest - 1996)

I had some kinda computer magazine back then like in 1989 or so it had Dragons Lair for the PC I wanted that game really bad and some Strip Poker games.
I showed the magazine to my school mates they kept bugging me about the strip poker game lol.
The thing is I didn't even have a PC back then just a console maybe a NES or Genesis.

The magazine that really hit home was Nintendo Fun Club later on which became Nintendo Power.

the internet has made print obsolete...even Playboy disappeared for awhile...

I still sub to Maximum PC that magazine is awesome...they even have game reviews.

Nothing beats pulling a good magazine out of your nightstand, turning the pages, un sticking the pages, the smells, the adventure , right?......:shifty::cautious:

Me too. I think they call them Beta's now?
They called them beta's back then too. The thing is the definition of 'beta' has changed since then if you ask me. But yeah I miss the old days and those disks somewhat too.

I never subscribed to CGW, I'd buy them sometimes if I really wanted to read a specific article. My mom subscribed me to PC Games and PC Accelerator in my tweens/teens and later PC Gamer when the two former went away.

Wasn't those discs that came with the magazine called Shareware. I had like 30 discs with Doom or Castle Wolfenstein on them. lol

Youngsters... :) Back in my day Creative Computing, 80micro, and Byte were the rags to read. Learned a lot from those magazines - even Z80 assembly language. Got to where I could follow the code from a hex dump of an executable file. Lots of great programs were typed in from the pages of those magazines.

Yes. Amusingly some of those 'shareware' games were full installs, but limited until you entered the right product key. It made things.. *ahem* interesting in the days before 'dial home' verification of keys.

Agree. I like filling up my bookcase with hardback Warcraft novels.

Thanks, this is like the official [H]ard Ole`Farts thread. "Denture Creme to your left, Metamucil to the right, and rocking chair w/dog named Blue next to it in the middle. 5 and quarter inch floppies for chewing on later."

There weren't any 5.5" floppies that I'm aware of; they were 8", 5.25", or 3.5".

You've probably never even used a hole punch to turn a floppy into a double sided one.

I turn 35 tomorrow....

Not old, not young....

But I'll be damned if the late 90's / early 2000's wasn't a magical time for PC Gaming!!

WE SAW REVELATIONS!!!!

Yes!! I took an after school class on computers in elementary. Basically learned how to make character go across the screen with what seemed like 300 lines of RUN command in DOS. I think it was DOS, didn't really care for it from there on. IBM 5150 series, thought we were the shit. Had one with a color monitor. Can't remember it too well but I remember doing it. I always like the hardware side of computers. In class I remember as an award for something we did we got to play the first Oregon Trail. lol

I remember reading magazines and books to learn how to program games. Didn't have a color monitor back then, but overclocking was as easy as moving a jumper. Still have fond memories of Zork.
