My current monitor is a 24" Benq 1080p 144hz. I have the opportunity to grab a 27" HP 1440p 165hz with GSYNC. I play a lot of Overwatch and currently play the Blackout mode in BO4.

16gb ram
GTX 1080 @ 2050mhz

Will my GPU be enough to handle things at 1440p at 165hz?

You could go 1080p 240hz and either play at 240hz or 144hz strobing mode. Those 240hz monitors are doing much better job than older 144hz tn panels. No scanlines and contrast stays at about 950:1 at least with aoc ag251fg. Lg 24gm79g I've had dropped image quality like a rock at 144hz.
Going 1440p will give You quite a bit more dpi so better visibility far away (good for battle royale games). 1440p is quite demanding but You will hit 144hz in those games I think.
Of course, 1440p makes 1080p locked consoles games and few indie games on pc a bit blurrier but by the sounds of it, You will not play at 1080p if You buy 1440p monitor so ignore that totally.

btw - nice to see someone still rocking old 2500k and asrock p67!

I think your 2500k is going to hold you back a lot.

My son had a 2500k and a 980Ti (~88% as fast as a 1080 I think?) and his fps in Overwatch went way way up when I bumped him to an 8700K)

My guess is that you will get about the same frame rates on the 1440p monitor because you may be CPU bound, not fill rate bound.

If you turn the settings down in blackout you will probably get 100+ frames. 1440p provides a good amount of image clarity in BR games.

I have an identical setup with a 1440p 165hz Gsych and I dip down to 100-120fps when it gets busy. But it isn't a problem because, well... that's the entire point of Gsync isn't it?

lol even at 4.7 a 2500k cant hold 60 fps in some games yet you are asking about the gtx 1080 handling 165? Going from 1440p wont even be a performance hit in many games as that cpu was already the limitation quite often at 1080p.

What games?

What games?
Well here are few that I know a 2500k cant always hold 60 fps in and in fact cant even average 60 fps in some of these such as Mafia 3 which eats quad cores for lunch. To think a 2500k is capable of holding 144 or 165 in most newer games is looney toons. Of course it depends on where you test the games too as some parts are much more cpu demanding than others. And some are IPC limited while others are core limited.

Watch Dogs 2
GTA 5
Mafia 3
Witcher 3
Fallout 4
Hitman
Project Cars 2
Deus Ex Mankind Divided
Assassins Creed Odyssey
Assassins Creed Origins
Crysis 3
Rise of Tomb Raider

I've played most of the games on that list when I still had my 2500k and had no problem holding 60 frames in them. There are a lot of modern games that still don't make great use of multiple threads, that's not to say that there aren't going to be games where you will be CPU limited, the 2500k is getting pretty old at this point, but maintaining 60fps with a 2500k and a beefy GPU is no big deal right now.

I really wouldn't point to Mafia 3 as proof of anything since the PC port was notoriously bad, hell it was locked to 30fps on launch because the framerate was so uneven. So you're not wrong per-se and i'm not trying to say that you are, but I think you're exaggerating a bit.

And I own all but two of those games and know full well a 2500k cannot always hold 60 fps in those. I had an oced 2500k before plus I can turn off HT on my oced 4770k and find spots that are cpu limited enough to only get around 60 fps. And the 2 games I dont own are Assassins Creed Odyssey and Assassins Creed Origins and there is ZERO question about dropping below 60 fps in those with a 2500k as they struggle to even average 60 fps in parts of those games.

I managed to grab an HP Omen 27 165hz 1440p monitor for a great price. It's being delivered tonight. Can't wait. My brother in law has a Benq 27" 1440p 60hz monitor and so I tried it on my rig. Oh god at 60 hz Overwatch gave me a headache from just running around at spawn. Everything felt so jittery that I couldn't really enjoy the higher resolution. So I'm very excited to get this monitor. I don't care if it's TN my BenQ 144hz monitor is also TN and I'm not bothered by it.

I'm going to build a new PC at the end of the year with either a 6 or 8 core Ryzen due to being able to upgrade to future Ryzen CPUs. I'm keeping my GTX 1080 until next gen.
