Microsoft officially released the creatively-named Windows 10 October Update today. The new Windows build finally brings DirectX Raytracing support to the masses, as it was only available in developer builds before today. Both the official Windows Blog and Nvidia's blog post claim that Battlefield V, Metro Exodus and Shadow of the Tomb Raider will be the first games to support ray tracing, and say that more titles are on their way. Along with DXR support, Windows got a boatload of other new features and tweaks, including a Windows 10 phone app, Powerpoint, Edge, and Outlook improvements, a revamped snipping tool, and emojis. Microsoft says Game Mode will now suppress pesky Windows Update notifications during play, and that users "may also see improved game performance with less FPS variability depending on the specific game and system." Folks concerned about privacy and tracking may want to take note of SwiftKey integration and the cloud clipboard feature. Check out the full feature list on the Windows blog.

One of the update's key features is the first public support for Microsoft DirectX Raytracing (DXR). This is huge for two reasons: DXR provides an industry-standard application programming interface (API) that gives all game developers access to GeForce RTX's hardware support of ray tracing. DXR adds support for ray tracing to the Windows operating system, so DirectX 12 Windows PCs can now execute the applications that support real-time ray tracing.

I wonder if this will turn into similar situation that MSFT did with Tessellation added to DX where they gave Nv the "right" to do in a specific way that gave them an upper hand and others (notably) AMD suffered because they had to do in other way even though they had already had the hardware for many generations prior.

I "hope not" and that for once MSFT was "nice enough" to have a very specific "it has to be done in this way or none at all" approach. I doubt it, seems that MSFT likes to "strong arm" the individual consumer into silly things but let the "big boys" (often enough Intel or Nv) do in their own way, when they can and should be going the route of "do it this way OR you will not be certified for this feature simple as that".

Nice to hear though, in theory it will allow for example Intel or Nvidia or AMD or even Arm type deal to really go to town to show "why they are great" if anything it might make raytracing become a common feature at the very low end to the crazy high end stuff without enforcing proprietary BS.

We can all have nice things if they get along ^.^

When the games are released, I guess we'll know.

As far as major Win10 updates go I'd say this one has been one of the better ones. The stuff they added is actually useful and I've had no hiccups or glitches so far.

i see my system here at work is now downloading the update.

Gonna be great for those billable hours.

am looking forward to see just how well the Ray tracing works out.

You forgot to mention the greatest, most long awaited feature of all: Dark Mode for File Explorer! :vamp:

As unbelievable as it may sound, this might really be the one of the few good things to come with this update! Along with ray tracing, for those of us fortunate enough to be in possession of an nVidia Turing card.

I sold my two 1080 TIs for about 1200.00 , i could care less about the loss in performance in SLI.. The 2080 TI should be a good all around performer with any game i throw at it as having ray tracing is worth it IMO

DirectX's "advantage" is it's disadvantage. It only runs natively on limited platforms. This limits the available market to developers.

Comparatively Vulkan offers far more platform mobility. Enabling developers to release the same game on more systems, and in turn make more money.

Vulkan runs on:
  1. Windows
  2. OSX
  3. iOS
  4. Android
  5. Linux
  6. FreeBSD (PS4)
  7. Switch
  8. Xbox One
  9. Chrome OS
Meanwhile DirectX runs on:
  1. Windows
  2. Xbox
As Atari would say, do the math.

Crap. They replaced the perfectly good Win32 snipping tool with a shitty mobile/store app.

The old one is still there and it still works. When you open it the program tells you that there is a new/improved one, but it still works okay. Ditto with the Disk Cleanup app, which was thought to have been removed as well.

Good news then since the windows fan sites had been reporting that the Win32 version was removed. Maybe there was enough pushback that MS backed off forcing the store app crap.

Gotta love those boastful RTX owners here. Yeah boys, your overpriced and overrated GFX cards can now do all that cool RTX stuff, you know, stuff like RTX at 1080p 60Hz, or 1440p at 45Hz, or even 4K 25Hz!

Wow I’m so stoked I have $1300 in my pocket, and not blown up the wall on that shit.

Oh shit, I almost forgot, you still can’t use that shiny RTX stuff, still no games.... /s

Anyway, I expect nGreedia probably haven’t shipped any RTX enabled drivers yet.

"Windows got a boatload of other new features and tweaks, including a Windows 10 phone app" b-b-but thought they stopped making win phones. Oh...I see... It's a W10 app for Android/iOS so M$ can datamine the mobile segment they failed to monopolize. Sneaky.

I really wtf'd about this as I have a windows 8.1 phone, until I realized that. just syncs your ms stuff between those phones like I can already do.

It is just the beginning but it at least does texting and views photos right from the your phone app on the desktop.

Hmm.. Windows 10 hello sign in to RDP... an actual option to increase font size without changing dpi settings

Possibly fixed search... Interesting

So I ran the update. It doesn't add back removed apps. My start menu looks the same as it did before.
My settings for sharing info did not change.

The only thing I've found so far that changed -- it's a bug -- is that Edge, Explorer, Waterfox and FF all had a most recently visited pages shown if I right clicked on the icon. The setting for that was turned off.
The fix is to toggle that setting on and back off.

There's also a tool to look at data that's sent to MS, though I haven't gotten one the one with a search bar to work...not sure if that means nothing is there or what. Other tabs have some data, but nothing remarkable. You do have to download this from the app store.

As for the new Snip tool, the only negative thing I can say about it is that the default size is bigger, but unless you're prone to doing really small screen grabs, the size will be about the same on both tools.
The best way to do it is to maybe to use <win>+<shift>+s, but I"m not sure if there's a way to save it without having something to paste the screen grab into. But clicking on the image in the lower right corner puts it in the new snip tool if saving directly isn't possible. Apparently this shortcut has existed for a while, but I never knew about it.

Finally, I wish that app that lets you grab pics from your phone and text from your PC applied to iOS, but for now it appears it's only for Android. I guess if there are security issues, they'll find out before any iOS version exists (if one is ever made).

Still no games out that support Raytracing.....
