Assassin’s Creed Odyssey

9.2 but it's going to be a pass for me I haven't even got though AC Origins it's not like I can devote all my life to UBI games :p

I skipped Origins, seems like it was a good choice.

Can't wait to pick it up someday

I don't want to read any reviews, for fear it spoils something. Or instills an idea about the game in my head that turns out to be false. I don't want that regardless if it is a positive or a negative thing.

Based on early benches it seems to perform quite a bit worse than Origins, especially on the GPU.

50+ hours, huh?

And some interesting points, like how the game is evolving into an RPG. Monetization... I'm kind of at a loss. We're all screwed, you know.

I might have to put Origins back on my backlog. Now, as soon as I get through Spiderman, FFXV, Detroit, Last of Us, Nier, and Last Guardian...

sounds good but also more of the same...I still haven't played Origins so I think I'd rather pick that up at this point...

DAMN! I got mine off steam, looks like its not gonna happen until like 10am tomorrow, I wanted to get my female-assassin-badass-spartan on after work.

Yep. If you pre ordered with the "Play Early" the Steam version will not unlock until 1600 UTC. The UBISoft purchased versions should already be unlocked (0000 local).

Why would you even say that? About 2% of the reviews say it's more of the same, the 98% of others say it's so much more than origins.

If you have the uplay version you should be able to unlock 17ish hours early with a new zealand vpn.

Unlock time was 0:00 local time for the UPlay version, as far as I'm aware. Shortly before I fell asleep around 00:30 EDT I noticed the "PRE-LOADED" button changed to "PLAY." Haven't had the chance to play it, yet, but I have off the rest of the week after today.

Can anyone tell me exactly the difference and what is impacted between "Guided" and "Exploration" mode?

I'm thinking of going Exploration, but some descriptions online vary as to what it affects. Regarding quests, Guided mode supposedly tells you exactly where to go and what the objectives are, whereas Exploration means you'll get a generic "Go somewhere near Lesbos, South of X and west of Y" and then you have to use your Eagle to reveal the location/next part of the quest and its objective nearby? If that's all the difference, that's one thing. I'm cool with that.

However, what I'm concerned about is how it affects map icons and elements that are not quest-related directly, that is to say "points of interest" or "?" . Does Exploration remove all of the "?" and other icons you've not actually "discovered" by being nearby/using your eagle? Compared to Guided where there is a "?" on the map showing there's at least "something there"?

I'd like to go Exploration but especially as somewhat of a completionist in these kinds of games, if I have no idea what I could be missing because I didn't fly/ride close enough to reveal something... that could be less enjoyable. Especially given that it seems there is a Store option for 4 count them 4 kinds of map-markers which are only unlocked globally, even in Guided mode, if you pay real world cash for Helix points- around $10 to get them all. I suppose you can probably find them in game, but if its like Origins some of those areas were completely out of the way (ie the Black Desert zone had a Hermit/Meditation spot that was the only thing in the zone and if you were not aware of it you may have not been close enough to discover it in game etc)., that already poses an issue.

If anyone has a video or pics of what erxactly the differences are between the two modes, that would be appreciated.

I managed to get a couple of hours of play time in last night because I was a cheeky bastard and refunded my Gold Steam edition for the Uplay Gold edition. Anyway, this is the first game that my Titan X Maxwell has struggled to get solid 60fps in a game @ ultra settings in 1080p. I'm mostly getting a solid 60fps with some dips into the lower 50's with all settings on Ultra, except Volumetric clouds set to "Very High". Antialiasing set to low and I am using HDR.

Very demanding game! Has anyone noticed any INI or general performance tweaks that don't sacrifice the graphic fidelity?

I see someone on the Steam forum mentioned they got a 6-10 FPS performance boost rolling back to the 398 nVidia drivers, but haven't had a chance to test this myself yet.

*Gaming highlight so far? Swinging from Zeus's nuts*

Playing now. Gorgeous, fun... I'm blown away but then again I'm a big fan of these. If you liked or loved Origins you should enjoy this "at last" as much if not more.

This is no witcher 3. Because this is so much better. The characters are instantly likeable and relatable, the dialogue is witty and clever. The dialogue choices are actually choices and not guesses, you can make an informed choice, and it seems to matter although after roughly 1 hour of playing I can't really testify to their actual impact on the story.

Game looks great, the combat is fun and fluid. I started on normal, but so far this seems too easy. I don't know if it will get harder later or I have to switch to hard. I don't know if you can change difficulty mid game.

I set the graphic to ultra, well actually that's not true the game automatically set it to that I just double checked if everything is maxed out :) And I didn't check the numbers but it feels perfect, no noticeable slowdowns anywhere. But I'm running 399 drivers, I didn't want to install the newer ones after the rumors of NVIDIA nerfing 10 series cards. But if that turns out to be true, I'm not buying NVIDIA for a while that's for sure.

Yeah the game looks great, and runs pretty well on my aging 1070. I am running ultra with a pretty solid 40FPS, the game also maxed everything out as maxed from the start but I set AA to "medium". I am going to need to fiddle with some settings to see if I can squeeze a few more FPS out of somewhere. Only an couple of hours or play but a lot of the animations and general game play do seem a bit more fluid when compared to Origins. It is so far a gorgeous setting.

yep, this game looks good, did you see all those jellyfish under water? Holy shit. They really refined a lot from Origins and combat can be tough but not daunting on hard difficulty, you just gotta keep hitting spacebar to dodge. Also, get the spartan kick even if you primarily stealth like I do, its hilarious plus it helps to get a mob off you if you get overwhelmed.

its going to be rough playing any other assassins creed game after this one because of all the missing mechanics.

Is the melee combat still like Origins (aka. Dark Souls/God of War lite)?
How are the bows? I always felt they were a little underpowered in Origins.

Don't have archery yet (I expect it to be more or less the same as Origins) but one of the big bragging points on this game is superior melee combat and I agree with that.

I love this game already. Tons of free time is going bye-bye.

This is definitely a must-buy sooner than later. I still have Tomb Raider to play (and RDR2 coming up), so hopefully this will be a Christmas Steam Sale item. Ubi tends to be loose with letting stuff go on sale quickly, so I'll keep an eye out starting in Nov/Dec.

Indeed I'm aware of that, but does it only affect Quests? That is to say, all other icons (ie ?'s , elements required to complete a Point of Interest if it has any etc, etc) are unaffected? If it only affects quests, does it only affect quests you've already taken? Thus, icons for available quests will be shown on the map either way?

I'm just trying to figure out exactly what it governs, especailly considering that it seems that - in my roughly 20 minutes of play thus far - some icons don't seem to show up on the map at all (ie basic white treasure chests, unless you specifically target them with your eagle) and that you can't "Discover" a place of interest with your eagle etc. Just want to make sure I'm not missing anything.

So does Exploration Mode only have to do with Quests you're currently on? Or does it affect anything else and if so, what?

Thanks!

P.S - A starting minor annoyance...

Ultimate and maybe Gold users get an included TEMPORARY 25% XP + Currency boost. This seems to be activated as soon as you start the game and lasts 2 hours. It would have been nice if I had the choice to active them manually, but what is really annoying is that they seem to count down even when you're in menus! I figured that if nothing else it would be time in-game, played ; you shouldn't be able to waste boost time when you paused the game into the menu screen etc. This is to say nothing for the permanent boosts being an additional "micro"transaction! All though I'm less annoyed by that compared to the $10 it will cost in order to unlock all of the map icon types - 4 of them are not visible without paying Helix credits, it seems.

I really did wish that they'd leave out that Abstergo modern day nonsense. It adds nothing for me and serves only as nuisance. What other company would place stories in some of the most interesting times in history and then detract from that with the Animus bullshit? Started really irritating me when I was playing Origins. Maybe I'm in the utter minority on this.

While I grant that those elements have been implemented with varying degrees of quality and success over the years, they are a pivotal feature of what makes Assassin's Creed's game world. Rather than simply disparate historical adventures, the stuff going on in the "real world" ties it all together from the Assassins vs Templars, the various conspiracies and projects influenced by both, and the entire First Civilization and everything related to them. It not just ties things together but explains a lot of lore and the relationships between other characters over a vast span of time. It can also be used to showcase different perspectives and add to the depth and breath of the lore, world building.

Its true that most of the "real world" portions where you actually play in the modern day is normally somewhat limited (though there is occasionally some "bleeding effect" where the person in the Animus learns the skills of the historical personality and then uses them - there was a little of this in Origins, but a lot more in some of the earlier games). These are mostly to encourage you to read all the little hits and lore elements, not an "action" part of the game save for a few circumstances, but I can understand how it changes the pace considerably.

Well I don't like it either, but that is the core concept behind the series. If they left that out they might as well not call it AC. And I'd be perfectly fine with that. But you know how marketing and investors think.

so no Assassins or Templars in Odyssey?...they should have taken the AC name out of the title and gone with just Odyssey and in small letters 'from the studio that brought you Assassin's Creed'

It's based around first civ lore and the eden artifacts.
There was speculation early on that it was a templar origin story, not sure if that panned out. It's less an "Assassin's Creed game" and more a game that takes place in the AC Universe.

However, the DLC "Legacy of the First Blade" is about the first Assassin.

The first few games needed the modern/Abstergo tie in, they made since and were integral. They have not been since Black Flag though. They could leave all that crap out and the games and story woukd stand on their own.

Origin could have been the chick getting into the mobile animus at the start, and getting back out, before the credits rolled and there would be zero negative impact on the story.

Hopefully Odyssey will have minimal jumps to the future story path.

I for one would appreciate a option to just leave that part out if the story all together.

That being said Odyssey is pretty sweetvso far really enjoying the few hours I've been able to play.

The Explore option is great, no mass of POIs all over the place and no idiotic hand holding quest paths to let you beeline to quest areas.
