While this was already hinted at by recent BIOS updates, the guys at Hardware Unboxed have confirmed that Z370 owners will not need a new motherboard if they wish to upgrade to Intel’s 8-core, 16-thread i9-9900K. “The rumor was that all but the 9700K and 9900K would be supported by the Z370.”
 
WOW Great News that chips price is out of reach for most people though.
Update: I'm reading it 's about 450.00 which isn't that bad I guess considering how much the Multicore Enthusiast chips go for on the x299 chipsets.

Dont worry, this is only because Intel messed up and have capacity issues at their fabs. They've said to investors everything will be back to "normal" sometime in 2019.
 
Now that amd is pressuring Intel to not release lackluster upgrades every cycle, it's probably going to make more sense to wait another year or two and get the 16 real cores...
 
How in the fuck did we get to a place where a chip will fit the socket, but you need a compatibility matrix to see if it will actually work. Also, what the fuck did i buy a 370 board for if it wont support all 6+ core chips. That was the whole reason we had to upgrade from 270.
 
Haha. I would certainly hope it would work on the board. I don't think that every cpu that comes out would need a whole new MB.
 
So the i7-9700k doesn't have hyperthreading (8core 8 threads)? That seems odd. I thought all i7 desktop cpus had hyperthreading.

This started with LGA-775 and the 925/915 chipsets that didn't work with Pentium D chips. Then 955/(early)945 didn't work with 65nm Core 2, and 975/965 didn't work with 45nm Core 2.

Same for Z170, they're all really the same socket right? Intel just likes to... you know. (rhymes with "cha-ching")

Not just sarcasm...as the 9900k still appears to be vulnerable to foreshadow attacks. Unless you have info how Intel have mitigated this attack vector in H/W for just this chip and not the entire range. For the target consumer market it's not a big deal, but for those running VMs may still require disabling HT for safety's sake. Or just buy the 9700k and spend the savings on [H] time.
