Kathleen Kennedy's contract with Disney has been extended for another 3 years to remain president of Lucasfilm through 2021. The four Star Wars films that she has launched since becoming the president of Lucasfilm have made $4.5 billion at the worldwide box office alone and more through merchandising. Most were hits, but the much maligned Solo: A Star Wars Story was considered a flop. This was probably due to the firing of multiple directors during the production of the film. She will oversee the new Indiana Jones movie and the final "chapter" installment of the Star Wars saga called Episode IX.

The move is a vote of confidence in Kennedy, who took command of Lucasfilm after Disney's $4 billion acquisition from George Lucas in 2012 and has overseen the relaunch of Star Wars, one of the most revered movie properties in cinematic history. The reaction to Last Jedi and Solo is resulting in a shift in studio strategy, with Disney making plans to slow the output of movies. "You can expect some slowdown," Disney CEO Bob Iger told THR in an interview published on Sept. 20, adding, "but that doesn't mean we're not going to make films."
 
Rogue One was stupidly enjoyable. Watched it several times. The others? Really not. In fact I disliked The Last Jedi and Solo enough to have no desire to ever watch them again. Solo was just trash. Last Jedi had a moment half way through where the whole series could have been awesome again but they just massively failed in the creativity department.

Jesus, how tone deaf can these people be? Let's give the woman that took the most popular and beloved movie franchise in world history and turned it into a SJW abortion and international punchline, an extension on her contract so she can keep on?

I actually quite enjoyed Last Jedi. Maybe my expectations for the movie were tempered after hearing all the uproar and then seeing it a month later. Though, I never really liked the Star Wars movies to begin with. I mostly tolerated them, and found aspects that I liked, but I never really connected with any of the characters. My favorite Star Wars properties are the Clone Wars show and the OG novels from the late-80's mid-90's.

A lot of people were pissed after Last Jedi, and I'd be surprised if they didn't make some internal changes to Episode IX to appease some of the most vocal of the fanbase. It all really comes down to this though: Disney is fantastic at making shitloads of money, even during economic crises - if they are backing Kennedy, then they have a reason to.

Not overly surprising. Consider how hated Michael Bay and how much people crap on his movies and he still gets work. The bottom line is if someone creates movies that make a lot of money, no matter how panned they are, that person will stay employed.

What if they lose $80 million on a movie in a franchise that was considered solid gold? If you work at Disney they extend your contract.
 
My guess is they're keeping her around to take the fall later when additional movies don't do well or even bomb. At this point they know Episode 9 and other movies already in the works are basically set already. As long as she's around they can blame all the bad shit on her before replacing her and going in a different direction.

That doesn't mean I like the decision. She should be out on her ass.
 
Star Wars is dead to me......seriously. I pass over anything relating to it anymore in the news, and shrug shoulders when anyone mentions it. The last one I enjoyed any bit was Rogue One-done really well, actually.

Well I hope she learned her lesson at least. Star Wars isn't a place people want social experiments. I know the next one with JJ Abrams will at least be ok if not better.
 
I knew they would do this BS, well they will pay for it dearly, when nobody goes to see their crap SJW movies.

Eh. Rumors are all over Hollywood, but it is likely that Iger thought about firing her (or letting her exit gracefully). However, follow up rumors point to him not being able to find someone to replace her as everyone asked would say no. Given Iger's word choice regarding Star Wars recently it sounds like Disney HQ is taking a more active role in Lucasfilm decisions. That means they can keep Kennedy around, avoiding the social media outrage that would come from firing a highly powered female, but also have her influence much more limited. If she really was chewed out by Iger while in a group call with other studio heads then you can bet that there was talk of replacing her.

I have a friend who's criteria for how good a movie is is how many special effects are stuffed into a movie and how good the special effects are. I'm afraid most of the American public is that way.
 
Disney doubling down on this shit is retarded. That's effectively what they've done.
 
damn what happened to the rumors that she was stepping down!?...she's botched the handling of these movies...doesn't seem she knows what she wants and lacks the leadership to convey any sort of unified vision, hence the behind the scenes turmoil with Rogue One, Solo and Episode 9 (with Colin Trevorrow getting the boot)

I respect your beliefs but can't agree with them. Only because just how wrong the movie treated everything that has been star wars.


I highly agree with what some people have said The story wasn't written with the characters and who they are in mins. The characters were forced to match the story, and the story has absolutely glaring holes that just ruined the whole thing for me.
 
She's producing exactly what Disney wants. That's why they extended her contract. The only SW movie I've seen since the prequels was Rogue One (which I liked). The rest? I have no intention of ever seeing them.

Solo bombed and Last Jedi caused a massive divide among fans. None of that is what Disney wants. Disney wants studios to make money and not make too many waves. That is why there was so much talk of Disney considering getting rid of her.

Would be hilarious if George Lucas bought it back for a fraction of what Disney paid him.

From a business perspective, Kathleen Kennedy has had a pretty bad track record lately with the last two Star Wars films performing way below expectations. Episode IX only made half what Episode VII did. Solo didn't even break even after distribution and advertising costs are factored in. The product isn't making as much money as it should be and that's because of bad decisions being made at every level. Disney thought buying Lucasfilm would be a license to print money and normally it would be, but not with the shittastic direction of the main trilogy has gone in.
 
Anyone... I mean anyone with miniscule movie knowledge, could have done a better job... Probably cheaper too.
It was just a matter of getting people that have respect for the craft, and at least some appreciation for the SW universe. Competent STUDENTS could have created better scripts.. directors should have been just that, and just a good decent one would have been fine... Casting directors should have been top level.
But no.. they did no writters, overpaid directors, and shit casting.
All amount to movies that are a pile of crap, including Rogue One.. i really believe people just say Rogue One was great, because they didn't want to admit TFA was crap, so something HAS to be great somewhere i guess.

4.5 billion is what they made but the profit is much lower than that. They have yet to recoup the cost of the purchase. There has been a severe downward trend in money made from the products and in one case they took a loss.

They damn well better start caring or it's going to take a long time just to break even.

I honestly enjoyed Rogue One despite the dreary ending. I also liked Solo a lot more than I thought I would. I enjoyed those better than Episode VII and IX.
