Video editing and game recording software (free)

My son wants to make gaming related videos for Youtube. He started with Windows Movie Maker and using clips from the web. It didn't have all the features he wanted, so I did some reading and got him the free Lightworks version. It might be a little too advanced, but he's only just started with it. Is there other good, free software that we should we look at?

Secondly, he now wants to get into recording his own gameplay, and using that for content. Spending money isn't out of the question, but I want to see if he sticks with it first. Any recommendations?

TIA

I don't know good free video NLE but for recording, if using Windows 10, it has built-in DirectX recording function. It seems to use the graphic card's H264 hardware encoder as it doesn't put load on CPU.
Accessing it during gameplay is I believe Win+G or something like that - after you start a game, a popup shows to remind of itself. It has options and quality settings, 30 or 60fps etc. It records good quality videos.
Video editing NLE again, Vegas or Adobe Premiere but they are paid. There maybe others but would very crippled.

DaVinci Resolve is a free NLE editing software, but it may have a steep learning curve. I personally haven't used it as I use Premiere Pro, been using Premiere for probably 20 years now.

I have an Nvidia card so I just use the built in game recorder in the GeForce Experience app.

this is a compilation of my highlights recorded with the GeForce app,

Thank for the heads-up on GeForce Experience. So far it seems to be working well.

Adobe all seems to be Creative Cloud based these days with a subscription. Are there any other recommendations for free editing software?
