2080 Ti for $1000 confirmed, HDMI 2.1/VRR confirmed dead for another year

Has anyone other than Samsung implemented VRR yet? I thought we'd see wide adoption this year, but it seems most manufacturer's are putting it off until 2019.

I'll bother with it when LG puts it in their OLED's, not a fan of FALD in the least. Maybe by then AMD will have a high-end card.

Yeah, I wish my B7 had that and the enhanced ARC that comes with HDMI 2.1.

I was thinking of getting a cheaper TCL 6 series next year for a gaming TV, expecting that it would have both, but it may be tough after getting used to OLED.

Definitely, and same here with my B7- but I'm not in a big hurry. I paid $300 for my receiver, which does 7.1.2, and that's rare as far as I can tell below $600.

Kind of a catch-22; you need a new TV and a new receiver, but worse, most of the apps on streaming boxes don't fully support all of the codecs that the TVs support. Basically the only thing that seems accessible is UHD BlueRay discs that have combined Dolby Atmos/Vision releases.

My receiver can do 5.1.2, but the TV can't send it due to the ARC limitation - it tops out at 5.1 I believe.

I love having all the streaming apps built into the TV, and it seems such a hassle to get a third device just to get proper Atmos streaming support - particularly since most devices don't support Dolby Vision.

do any stream even do atmos?

I believe Apple TV 4k does, and my Shield will on apps that have that enabled (which doesn't include Netflix and Prime so far as I know). I need to go back and see what's what, as all of the above is fairly fluid.

4k doesn't automatically mean atmos though does it?

Nope. Doesn't mean jack shit, really, beyond the ability to handle it should the app also support it and the content contain it. Of course, that alone is new this year for the part, it didn't ship with support, and that was one of the reasons I went with the Shield instead. The other being that I haven't yet been initiated among the Fruit Faithful.

Netflix on the B6/7 OLED will stream in Dolby Digital+, which shows up as Atmos on the receiver, but is some kind of 5.1 stream.

As for third party products, Nvidia Shield can stream Atmos but is only HDR 10, and Apple TV 4K was recently upgraded to support both Dolby Vision and Atmos (I believe). I've heard that Xbox One X also supports both, but that seems surprising as I thought it only supported HDR 10.

It does not, it doesn't even mean HDR.
Right now the options are alll confusing.

There's 4K, which is worthless to anyone who didn'td sit very close to their TV.

There's HDR, which is great to everyone with a good HDR TV (not every TV that claims HDR has good HDR support).

And then there's Atmos for those with Atmos speakers, though it also subtlety benefits those without.

Just dug around again to confirm this. Still waiting on a potential DV app/app support for the Shield. Seems I should have gambled on the Apple 4k TV instead, if that matters to me.

Now I can choose Dolby Vision with the TV app, or Dolby Atmos with the Shield, but not both :D.

Netflix and Amazon are well known for streaming E-AC-3 (DD+). And it is no where near the quality and bitrate of Atmos or TrueHD for that matter.

TechPowerUp did their most recent story on PCIe scaling today. I mention it because they showed how the 2080TI @ 4k is basically saturating 2.0x16 or 3.0x8. They and others are speculating we should see MOBO PCIe 4.0 adoption in the next 12 months. I'd further suggest the likelihood of some kind of refresh from NV with these cards involving HDMI 2.1 and PCIe4.0 at that time.

https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/NVIDIA/GeForce_RTX_2080_Ti_PCI-Express_Scaling/

edit: They also mentioned that anyone planning on SLI'ing these needs to make sure their current mobo/cpu combo provides true 3.0 x16 to both cards or you'll likely have some performance loss.

I am sure they won't have any issues with that
Thats not what I read on Guru3D.

I just got back from Taipei and no luck finding the cards. Every store had no clue when they would get them so they didn't want to take preorders. Best I could do is get them to agree to call me if they ever got it in stock. 2080 was easy to find pretty much everywhere. I did however talk to my friend who works at msi and found out some information. Nvidia supplied them(msi) with the most low amount of 2080ti units they have ever seen. They are so backed up on preorders they don't even want to take any more. Also they said Nvidia is implementing strict control methods and only allowing them to sell 30 2080tis in Taiwan this coming 27th. Freakin 30 for the whole country. Of course, they are already all preordered. He said this was very unusual and shockingly small compared to previous generations and thinks Nvidia wasn't ready for this release or something else is going on.
