Samsung Note 9 - expected pricing is utterly ludicrous

thank you captain obvious.. next

well, his point makes sense, the 0% offered on cars is through dealerships that work with the manufacturer, so they are holding hands to make the deal and costs can be tailored to make it look good.

You can buy a phone outright from the manufacturer, or carrier , for the same price as 0% financing, then there is no deal there. They just want you on their service.

Not to mention there's also almost always a BOGO deal that let's you get two phones for the price of one, also at 0%.

Well I am definitely glad I did the headphones and not the Fortnite V-bucks since my kids were still able to get the Galaxy Fortnite skin for free. It was a win win for everyone. The headphones sound great to me and the kids love the Galaxy skin. The phone is a huge improvement over my Note 4. I never realized how slow my Note 4 was until I got the 9.

Is it bad that this doesn't surprise me anymore?

In before anyone says it's an isolated case and it's not widespread as the Note 7 was... I know.

I'm not one to defend Samsung much (haven't used one since the Note 2), but I thought the Note 7 ordeal was entirely overblown too given that (from what I remember) there were only like 30 something confirmed cases of the battery exploding out of the millions that sold, so even accounting for the ones that may have blown up afterwards had they not been recalled, there were only like a fraction of a percent affected. But the media blew it way out of proportion (like they're seemingly doing with this as I've seen many sites report on it already) and basically forced Samsung to save face by recalling all of the these phones, costing them exponentially more than it should have otherwise. There's several cases a year of Li-ion batteries failing catastrophically across several different devices; that's just the inherent and yet negligible risk of the tech. But of course I'm no CFO either and Samsung showing the grand gesture of recalling all phones (twice) and then giving those customers a nice deal on the S8/S8+ (along with developing and showing their new battery safety check standards) may have saved them enough bad PR and customers to make up most of that cost.

So this was reported by one source (NY Post), and everyone else is reporting on THEIR story. They've also been known to put up sensationalist bullshit for sales. I grew up in NYC, the post is basically toilet paper.

Long story short, I'll believe it when it happens again.

I mean it either happened or didn't happen. There isn't a half-fire.

No, there isn't a half fire. But just because a newpaper with a shitty reputation SAYS it happened doesn't mean it went down that way. Maybe it was cracked and the battery was pierced? Maybe she's making the whole thing up for the lawsuit? Now, I'm NOT saying to give Samsung a pass on this, in fact I think they should be held to a more scrutinous standard BECAUSE of the Note 7 bullshit.

But I'm waiting for more that one story to come out, and CERTAINLY one from a more credible source than the NY fucking Post.

Funny how "news" like this didn't start blowing up with the Note 8, when the Note 7 fiasco was far more recent. Why would it suddenly be a thing one generation later, with the Note 9?

At any rate, I'll see how this all plays out in later months. I mean, it's not like Samsung's the only one to have bad lithium-ion battery problems. Damn near every manufacturer has had a phone explode because of a bad battery at one point, yet only certain ones really get blasted for it.

My main concern is to see that the Note line survives, because no other manufacturer has a penabled alternative at any price. Capacitive styluses don't count, before anyone tries to go there.

Very happy with my $180 LG X-Power phone.

It works as a cell phone, works for texts, GPS navigation, wifi hotspot and anything an Android phone can do.
Phone bill is $45/month (unlimited talk/text).

I don't understand spending $1200 for a phone and the $300/month phone bills.

.

I don't have one but how much battery life do owners get? Is it above 50% after a normal weekday at 6pm?

Well that's going to be a highly subjective figure depending on the user and their typical use case. Generally people go by how much Screen on Time (SoT) they get in a day because usually the display is the largest power draw on the phone throughout the day, but that number can be skewed a lot too by other types of usage (streaming audio, downloading stuff over LTE, navigating, and other stuff that you can do with the screen off).

But from what I've seen in reviews and from a friend with a Note 9, it can usually hit around 7 hours of SoT in a day, which I'd classify as somewhat heavy usage in a day. That's pretty good, but I would actually expect a bit more from it considering it has a massive 4,000 mAh battery and the most efficient SoC Qualcomm has out at the moment, because I can usually get 6-7 hours SoT on my Pixel 2 XL in a charge with only a 3540 mAh battery and last year's SoC (my highest in a charge is actually 7.5 hours over a 27 hour period) very consistently.

I just got my wife a Note 9 though through the Samsung Mobile Insights program for half off, so I can report back how good the battery is with her usage, which is usually pretty heavy through the day streaming music and books constantly. She's coming from a Moto Z Play though, which is still like the king of battery life for any phone (iPhones included) with 10+ hours of SoT in a charge consistently, so I hope she's ok with the battery on the Note 9.

Small update: Haven't seen any other reports about Note 9s bursting into flames, but the NY Post still publishes fabricated bullshit.

(Fake) News at 11.

Also keep in mind that this is actually LESS than what the Note 8 cost, and the S9 was slightly cheaper than the S8 as well.

Nobody is telling you to buy the $1200 version. It's worthless, ESPECIALLY with SD card storage. It's there for the people who blindly buy the most expensive model, plain & simple.

That being said, I got my S9+ for $320 on preorder. I'll PROBABLY sell it and pick up the Note 9 on a similar discount, so I'll probably profit slightly.

I'll also finally be upgrading my wife & I iPhone 7s to the new version this September.
curious as to why you say the SD card storage is useless?

I didn't say the SD storage was worthless. I said releasing a 512GB version when you already have SD storage was worthless.

Do you really need a 1TB drive on your phone? Is 650gb not enough?

I see what you are saying now, I agree too. Our phones, at least my use of, do not require that much space. I had the note 8 with a 128gb SD card for music about 40gbs worth. the other 64gb internal was barely used. Maybe in a few years i'd fill it up but by then i would have swapped phones already.

This is all good except we still dont have the fucking 512s after a month plus delay.
Still waiting on my ghost phone.

So I got lucky as hell and cancelled my Bestbuy order which was never going to come seemingly. Went to Verizon because they said they had one 512 in stock. Typed this on it.

I also got 200 off phone plus 300 more for trade in of my old galaxy s7. 500 off and Samsung said they will still honor my preorder akg bundle.

Wowsers

Glad you finally got your phone, and that you got such a good deal... it's a bit ridiculous that they couldn't ship a 512GB model for weeks. Say what you will about Apple, but I haven't heard of any logistical issues with the 512GB version of its latest iPhones.

So using this for the past few days, I'm completely... whelmed. OBVIOUSLY, the difference between the S9+ to the Note was minor at best. Getting my S8 ready to ship back for trade has me missing the smaller form factor. I know I'll be getting the S10 (free or discounted) when it's released, I'll probably skip the + when it comes out.

Traded my S8+ for the Note9 Saturday night, so far I like it much better, just the increased battery life made it worth it, being able to draw dicks and sending them to my gf is the icing on the cake.
