Hey everyone! I'm just going to preface this. I've been dying for a more portable gaming monitor to take to LAN parties, big events (Quakecon, DreamHack etc), and a second monitor to use while I'm traveling. I've found that it's pretty common for Chinese manufacturers to take excess laptop displays, pair them with a controller board, an external case, and create dual purpose monitors/displays with them. Ever since the market was flooded with 120hz panels (skylake gaming laptops) I've been dying for one of these companies to re-purpose these AUO gaming panels.

Well today, is that day. I stumbled upon one on eBay/Amazon with the price of $297.

Strangely enough, it uses a Dell S2718D controller to handle the display. It also supports HDCP which is great. Let me know if you guys have any questions!

Really cool - is it IPS or TN? I see conflicting sources on that. Perhaps there are two versions. I'm extremely interested in this - maybe I'll get the generic panel + driver board direct from aliexpress. :p

Can the monitored by powered via USB-C directly from the computer or will it only work plugged into the wall?

Thanks for sharing. How do you find the antiglare coating? How's the brightness?

Wow, my 24" 1440p monitors can be hard to read.

Is that a vesa mount on the back?

I overall see going higher than 1080p a waste. Even on 27", 1080p is perfectly fine. Especially on 17". I use 15" 1080p dell ips laptop at work and it's very sharp and nice.
Let's not forget that 17" crt's were agold standard and had even lower ppi.

Does this support backlight strobing/scanning by any chance?

It's a little better PPI than a 4K 27". It'll be fine with 150% scaling.

The S2718D controller does not support black frame insertion of any kind, so I assume this doesn't either.

Has anyone else who got one of these been able to get 120hz at 1440p? I can switch to 120 hz at 1440p and the monitor reports that it is running at 120 hz, but when using the UFO Test Frame skip checker, it appears that it is just skipping every other frame. 60hz at 1440p works fine, and 1080p at 120hz looks great on this monitor. The monitor will appear to work for for at any hz from 60 up to 120hz but the motion always looks like it's running at 60 hz when testing it at 1440p.

I'm suspected that the monitor cannot actually do 120hz at 1440p and it's intentionally skipping frames while reporting that the monitor is actually going at 120 hz. I'm using a GTX 970 with only displayport 1.2, but that should be capable of at least running at 120 hz at 1440p for testing purposes.

I thought it was a little sketchy considering the S2718D from which the controller comes from is a 60 Hz monitor.

It seems to be somewhere between a VA/TN

Yep it can be bus powered (by laptop or desktop)

Brightness is good, I don't have a way to measure the nits though :/

Yep! two VESA 100 holes I believe

Not sure, what's the best way to test?
