Micron has decided to expand its facilities in Manassas, Virginia with a new plant that is dedicated to creating high speed memory for autonomous vehicles. The current plant in Virginia employs 1,200 engineers and technicians while the new plant is expected to be staffed by another 1,100 similarly skilled employees. The $3 billion investment will feature clean-room manufacturing completed in the fall of 2019 with production ramp in the first half of 2020. A global R&D facility will employ another 100 engineers.

"Micron's Manassas site manufactures our long-lifecycle products that are built using our mature process technologies, and primarily sold into the automotive, networking and industrial markets," said Micron President and CEO Sanjay Mehrotra, in a prepared statement. "These products support a diverse set of applications such as industrial automation, drones, the IoT, and in-vehicle experience applications for automotive." Mehrotra said that Micron is currently the largest maker of such systems globally.

Would be nice if they expanded it even more to handle their RAM and NAND production, so they can pull out of IP stealing and counterfeiting China...

Awesome - this is almost in my backyard. Keep it rolling VA - when I get ready to retire and sell it will hopefully boost my house price :)

Micron doend't R&D or produce any products in China. I believe they have a packaging facility there and that's it outside of sales.

Unlike in WV where a factory making insulation for houses seem mighty unpopular by the locals, i think a IC producing plant deal in more nasty stuff then a rockwool factory.

UMC lured away engineers from Micron’s Taiwan operations with promises of raises and bonuses, according to the Taiwanese authorities. Then, it asked them to take some of Micron’s secrets with them, according to Micron’s court filings and the authorities. The engineers illegally took with them more than 900 files that contained key specifications and details about Micron’s advanced memory chips

Who considers Taiwan China? Taiwan certainly doesn’t and there are criminal cases pending there regarding the UMC bs. Taiwan is not hostile like China.

The links I posted show Micron operations for design and manufacturing in China (Beijing, Shanghai, and Xi'an).

And it's right in the article of the last link I posted:

"According to the Taiwanese authorities, the designs were bound for China, where they would
help a new, $5.7 billion microchip factory"

This targeting and stealing IP by the Chinese government via corporate espionage through their government controlled technology corporations has been all over the [H] Front Page News.

>Assembly and test operations

i.e. PACKAGING. They do not fab or perform R&D in mainland China.

They manufacture products containing RAM, NAND, and CMOS in Xi'an. They also do perform R&D at their Beijing and Shanghai locations.
