Maryland resident and Madden shooting survivor Jacob Mitich is suing Electronic Arts and Chicago Pizza for failing to provide a safe space for the NFL ’19 tournament. The plaintiff, who had been shot in the leg, alleges EA knew enough about shooter and former champion David Katz to identify him as a risk. “EA failed to provide security, screen the gamers, inform local law enforcement about the tournament, or tell the gamers anything about the venue.”

Mitich's attorney, James Young with Morgan & Morgan in Jacksonville, said the lawsuit alleges negligence. There was no off-duty officer for the event, which drew more than 100 people, he said. The mall had a private security guard, and she was spotted in the pizza place before the shooting, but Young said it's unclear where she was during the shooting.

I'm all for EA getting fucked over. I hope he takes away the CEO's yearly bonus.

I'm not sure if I'm ready for events of this size to require security, insurance and gated areas.

P.S. If the guy is young and has no health insurance, I think it would be proper for EA to cover his medical expenses and loss of income, but EA should not have an obligation to do that.

Another "wah, I got hurtz, give me money and a nanny state so I'll feel uber safe"
Sorry these people got hurt/killed, but It's people like this is why this world is heading toward a world like the one in Demolition Man.
Can't do shit, can't say shit. Now give me that fine ticket so I can shove up your ass!

Well said. It's the GUY who pulled the trigger. The infuriating thing is that they'll blame anything and everything except the guy. They'll blame guns, video games, the venue, security, etc..
EA has the money to spring for at least one armed guard. Hell, bowling alleys have a security guard. There should have been some sort of security in place, and there wasn't. If this were any of your family you'd be singing a different tune.

News flash...you leave your own home and you are no longer in a "safe space." Deal with it.

Unless there is something grossly negligent that EA and Chicago Pizza did (unlikely), this should go nowhere.

Sounds pretty insensitive.

Had it of been someone in your family killed at this event would you be saying that?

So you are saying the event is not responsible for the safety of its patrons like they have no liability in this?

I'm not sure the lawyers will agree with you.

The world isn't a sensitive place, and I don't really care if you think me insensitive or not. The slippery slope of what you're espousing leads to no outside events because of the extreme liability on the part of every venue. So, no, I don't think they have liability in this unless there is gross negligence.

If some terrorist uses a van to mow down people in line for an iPhone launch is it Apple's fault?
If someone detonates a pipe bomb in the stands of a local town Little League game is it Little League's fault for drawing too many people together in one place to watch kids play baseball?

My belief is that if you restrict an area to be a gun free zone then you should provide sufficient security to protect all attendees. This is what happens when you restrict citizens from protecting themselves while also failing to provide them supplemental protection.

Not even remotely the same thing. Those examples you gave all have armed guards. The area the tournament was held was a "gun free zone" with no security in place. Major difference.

Be your own security. Concealed carry or open carry wherever you go. One underpaid security guard isn't going to save you from an unhinged person. Training and a dedication to being responsible for yourself will. Pay attention to what is going on around you. Be vigilant for signs of a problem and deal with it before it's a problem. I'm not saying shoot everyone. I'm saying look for problems and take appropriate action. For example, I noticed a guy was approaching to mug me in downtown Louisville so I moved to a defensible position and engaged him in conversation. Being noticed stopped him dead in his tracks, and he moved on after a brief conversation. Events like this only come as a surprise because no one is paying attention. Giving up freedom for security results in less security, less freedom, and a nanny state. Even police aren't required to help you, it's up to their discretion. Do a web search for "Warren_v._District_of_Columbia" to get a bit more informed on the topic. Not trying to attack you personally, but the mentality that it's "someone else's job" is exactly why we have the issues we have today.

I don't think I've ever been to a little league game or release line where I saw an armed guard, unless you count myself being armed and vigilant in the line/stands.

Gun free zone. You are not allowed to carry there. But normally I'd agree with you. I walk my dogs in the middle of the night to avoid my trash neighbors and carry a switchblade. Not as good as a gun, but I'm confident enough that I'll take any attacker down with me if they're feeling ballsy. Plus, they gotta deal with my bitches too :D

I live in a town of under 25k and we have security guards in the parks. And armed park rangers. Not that they're all that useful, but they do serve as a deterrent. And apple stores have a security guard in them. At least the ones I've been to.

I live in Brandon, Fl. 100K pop, no guards at out parks or games.
It's all about location location location.

I don't believe you. Park rangers carry, and you most certainly have park rangers. Last time I was in Florida there were Broward county deputys on every damn block. And if it isn't a gun free zone, you have the added benefit of someone in the crowd toting a side arm that would hopefully be helpful.

This is an assumption.

I never said anything like this.

I do feel there should have been more security at this event and see a possible case here, we shall see how it plays out.

I really can't understand US logic.... Guns/weapons kill people, let's carry more guns/weapons.
This type of logic give way too much chances on weak mind to end up doing such stupid act...

Why not for once come to the conclusion that guns should be more regulated ? (Oh lord, please protect me from the flaming warriors)

Other countries have been doing fine this way... don't you think ?

(D*mn, if I hit Post reply it might be my last one lol)

alcohol is regulated and drunk driving continues to kill way more people than guns....drugs are regulated and they also continue to kill way more people than guns....

regulation is not the answer....if you cant understand this now, you never will

We really don't have large parks, just many. Coarse 20-ish years ago I believe we had a trailer in one that might have been used by PRs.

Personally I don't feel like running a marathon from some wank w/ a knife or to see who can beat up each other the most hoping LEOs to save someone.
Try to fuck with me, and get shot to death.
It's people like Mark Zimmerman that give responsible gun users/owners a bad name.

Sorry, I just don't trust most people to carry weapons and I would say that it's not because XYZ is worse by XYZ standard that it's now not a problem anymore...
Anyway, I knew what I would be facing when I posted this so I won't bother teasing you more :)

Edit: The simple fact that someone may be carrying a gun tends to help make things escalate way faster. I can't understand because I never lived with such "open mind" but again, never felt the need neither since it's safe here even is big cities.

Just to add to what these other guys have said...

Guns do not kill people. People do. How do we fix the people issue?

I don’t think that most people are saying that everyone should be walking around with a gun. We realize that there are people who have no business owning one. What we are saying is that most of these tragedies seem to happen in gun free zones where the shooters know that they are more likely to carry out their misdeeds without facing equally deadly opposition. Criminals and the mentally ill will of course ignore the fact that a place doesn’t allow guns (a form of regulation/gun control), leaving innocents in a position of weakness. Many of us are simply advocating for these people to be able to defend themselves so that when someone decides to start shooting, it’s not a slaughterhouse like the Orlando night club was.

I don’t wish to flame you at all, just provide new perspective. Thanks for keeping it respectful! :)

You're right, people kill, however it seems easier to say no one may have a gun unless XYZ then trying to sort who shouldn't have one.
Also having gun free zone in such wide gun carry zones may also be an issue.... and not by the fact of been a gun free zone. If all zones were gun free, they wouldn't target those "gun free zone" ;) there would be too much choices I guess.

I live in Canada (maybe you already figured it out) and we don't have this much issue with weapons and can walk around at night in big cities without fear.
I also understand that if everyone have the right to own one, well you better have one... I would probably own one if I lived over there. The simple fact that everyone or almost have one makes it more difficult to agree with what I say and I understand and do not judge, I merely try to understand why it doesn't change after so much tragedy.

Psst ... maybe the solution to the US gun violence problem isn’t more guns.

No one wants to talk about things like mental illness (like this shooter). CNN was blaming guns and Fox was blaming video games. WTH?

Teasing=Trolling. Don't Troll if your trying to make an intelligent point.

I'm convinced that most of the people here have never ever fired a gun in their life.

More guns would not have helped save the victims. They were ambushed and killed before anyone would have had a chance to act to prevent it; the only thing more guns would have done is cause a shootout and create chaos as no one would know who the bad guys are and who the good guys are. And when the police arrived, the so called "good guys" would likely get shot as the police would have no idea who the perpetrators are.

First world countries don't have this problem. You shouldn't have to be constantly looking over your shoulder nor should a simple gaming event have to have Fort Knox like security simply because the US cannot act like a civilized country.

It seems painfully obvious that, in this case, a person with a 12 year history of mental illness shouldn’t have a gun ... you know, fewer guns.

I’m amazed that people are so trusting of others carrying firearms, hell I don’t even trust people to turn into their correct turning lane, when making a left in a multi lane situation, let alone carry a deadly weapon.
