After August 28, Amazon Prime members will no longer receive a 20% discount for video game pre-orders. Instead, store credit will be provided: “pre-orders of ‘select video games’ will come with the $10 store credit promotion.” IGN has set up a list of titles that gamers may want to pre-order before the promotion expires.

Amazon Prime members aren’t alone in losing their savings. Best Buy Gamers Club Unlocked, a competing subscription service that came with a 20 percent discount on games, shut down earlier this summer. Best Buy’s remaining membership program, My Best Buy, also gives buyers $10 in credit for pre-ordering certain popular games.

It doesn't matter much to me. I have too much of a backlog of games, and besides, I don't purchase a game until it has a "Game of the Year" edition under $20.

Kind of sucks, but it was a pretty weak version of Bestbuy's GCU and was only on select titles anyway. Also it was mainly only useful for console games anyway.

Bought a couple of things over the years but mainly stick to Steam. The self-updating and cloud saves really seal the deal for it. Clicked on the IGN list page and it was pretty much console stuff. Saw a few I liked but currently still console-free.

Meh, never used it. I only buy digital copies for my Switch anyways. I would rather spend the extra and never have to keep track of cartridges.

As I wrote before, I could never understand why this did not apply to digital PC games as well. Likewise, I was never really happy with Amazon/ Twitch Prime gaming endeavors and this one is even worse. $10 store credit can typically be less than the average 20% discount on a title and worse, most of the time "store credit" cannot be used on the current purchase only a future one. Hell, I get an additional 5% store credit for every purchase I get on the Humble Store and that's on top of my stacking 10% discount as a Humble Monthly subscriber! Amazon was already coming in for digital game sales behind most everyone else in terms of discounts - Humble, GMG etc... so I can't really see why they make it even worse.

Ha! Didn't even knew this existed, until today, that i pre ordered metroid prime 4. Well now i am losing the benefits awesome! /S
And yes Amazon is making it easier to cancel prime... Plus Walmart is just becoming stiff competition in all aspects... And price more often than not is lower with Walmart. I know i have been shopping walmart more and more, and just naturally been shifting away from Amazon....
Amazon did shatter my faith in their prices a while ago.. I got BURNED in floor cleaning equipment, yes directly from Amazon... But back then i had nearly blind trust in their prices (afyer so many years checking and seeing they are the lowest even if by a few bucks, i just trusted them)... after that, i dont, and i am right not to, i can find lower prices quite routinely now in other places...
Btw i called Amazon about how they burned me on this, but they offered nothing.. and that is fine... Its just my confidence that was shattered, nothing mayor or valuable.
I guess Amazon's many billions in profit have to come from somewhere, namely higher prices.. good on them for all i care.. I may cancel prime.. i am still on the fence.. its just a pain with the high minimums, and Amazon in general is kind of shitty without prime.... Which says something i guess

Oh the horror. Now I will actually have to wait for the games to be released and reviewed before purchasing!

maybe we can now bury this idea of pre-ordering for good.
lets return to the sanity of actually getting reviews of games posted and then when they suck horribly and release completely broken, we can then NOT buy them and maybe get back to them releasing finished working products.

yes. i am crazy... why do you ask?

I just went to check and it looks like its already gone.

I was going to preorder RDR2 physical copy and I didn't see any discount. I made sure I was signed into my Prime account. Oh and the physical copy thing, you know, where it comes in a box, never found it.
(I know, preorder... but hey this is rdr2 and 20%)

Amazon keeps making it easier to cancel membership.
They never made it easy to sign up, for the rest of the world. They offer it sans free shipping, sans 1 day shipping, and most of the prime library off limits due to geographic restrictions. It's like they don't want us to sign up. That said, amazon is not the place to buy videogames anyway. There are dedicated sites for that with much better deals.

the 20% off still works, just checked with Fallout 76, but I couldn't find a RDR2 physical copy, all were digital codes.

Hmmm...
I did try to put the digital copy in my basket and saw a screen similar to that one but it definitely didn't offer me the 20% preorder discount.

Has to be physical copy only. digital copies don't get the discount.

Geez first Amazon jacks up prime again and now doing away discounts. Guess I know what I won't be renewing......Greedy Bezos.....

Their balance sheet would indicate the opposite.
Last time I looked (granted this was two years ago), they were losing quite a bit on Prime shipping. The price has risen since then and maybe they make money off Prime now.
They have always made a lot of money in web services which have negated their loses on Prime and turned a profit for the company as a whole.
