Video Games are Sucking You In and Not Letting Go

if video games are really doing this to you, your real life ain't got enough shit to deal with.

Take heart. Eventually everyone has to moves out of your mother's basement. You will realize that gaming; though a good way to pass the time was actually a colossal waste of time.
Also that you are 40 and never kissed a real girl.
Name checks out, but you should post in GenMay if you want to let everyone know you kissed a girl. ;)

F2P mobile games should be forbidden. They play on people's gambling addiction.
This is why I will always support games like WoW. You pay a sub and then everyone's equal, depending on how they play. No $$$$$ whales spending thousands of dollars each month to get the advantage.

I know the feeling very well. Many mobile games rely on the impatience of their players. On a roll but used all your resources and now must wait 12 - 24 hrs to replenish. Ran out of moves from completing a puzzle you've been stuck on for weeks. $1.99 for 5 more moves. (Guilty! Candy Crush), Finish that manufacturing process now instead of waiting 2 days. Some just spend, spend, spend to get the advantage if they have the funds. Others may pay to relieve a moment of frustration (like my candy crush example above) which can build up over time without realizing how much you have spent.
Subscriptions, like WoW, or full upfront payments (without loot box gambling) are the ones I like because it creates an even playing field for everyone.

I'm turning 40 this year..i'm married, 2 kids own my own house and my colossal waste of time is no better or worse than whatever you waste your time on.

I would much rather have the youth of America addicted to video game hookers, e-crack, and shootouts in GTAONLINE9000 than real hookers, real meth, and shooting up my neighborhood for lulz.

its been a while, but from data i saw years ago, violent gun crime dropped around the same time doom came onto the scene...

;)

I'm almost 72 and video games are my hobby. They have been for a long time. I find it amusing in this context, that Morrowind is one of the most addictive games I know of.

Doom finally got cheap enough, I still have Rage, and it should be fun. I have about 10 minutes in it so far, got it set up and almost made the first stage on Ultra Violence. I will keep the shotty for last, next time. ;)

Holy crap, seriously? I need to look that shit up. Sounds interesting.

Yep, 40's through mid 70's pinball was outlawed in New York. I was there at the time and remember when pinball machines came back which was about the same time Atari 2600 came out.

The more videogames do this kind of stuff the less I find myself playing them.

I have very similar feelings and have wasted too much time especially when I was younger on games. I guess we all need some sort of recreation/hobby though. Watching TV for example is just as much of a waste if not worse (since it's totally passive). My real obsessive hobby now is learning guitar, piano, and bass and I know those could be seen as a nonproductive waste of time too but at least at the end of the day I have something to show for it in the real world, not just some steam/xbox/etc achievements/trophies.

I never played Fallout: New Vegas for example and own it but I just can't bring myself to play it having already played Fallout 3 and 4. I know it's a huge time investment but however good it may be I know it's going to basically be the same experience as the other games.

Watching mindless TV is a worse waste of time. "too much time" on anything is probably not healthy, games or otherwise. Learning to play instruments is not nonproductive. You're stimulating other areas of your brain and who knows? If you get good enuff you can make money on the side doing gigs and meet lots of interesting people at 'open mic' nites and such. I used to play and sometimes wonder if I should pick up the axe again and pluck a few notes. Keep it up dude and don't "fret" over it ...

I'm finding it harder to get into games these days. They're no longer crafted to be interesting or fun. They're just soulless empty maps that make you run around a lot with no real purpose or context to anything that happens in the game.

Games used to make you feel like you were a part of the experience, attempt to create an interesting world, and present interesting situations to the player. That seems to have died down in SP games. MP games are going the same way. You watch a level up counter and the games are effortless with no setting or care put into the subject material.

I'm annoyed with the Nvidia GPU price hikes, but with gaming going down the drain maybe I don't need to spend money on a new GPU. Games are fairly terrible these days.

I'm hopelessly Doomed. Been play games since video pong...lets see 2600, Rat Shack color computer, Atari 400, Atari 800XL, Atari 1040 ST, Amd 40mhz build, 20 built computers later, 6700K 1080ti, 16GB, plus xbox, wii, xbox 360, ps 3, xbox one.

Someone plays a lot of Ubisoft games I see :)

Yeah...on the other hand playing a game the other day I was too lazy to walk 500 meters to do something in the game. So either I am super lazy or the game is just really boring...

You're just describing multiplayer games.

Bit of a brief talk about it, but its a good place to start. I could have sworn that I've seen a documentary of some sort on the pinball ban, but I can't find out when, where, or what it was even called.

I'd swear somebody posted it the last time it came up on [H]. It was an alarmist piece that claimed teen girls in Jersey were turning tricks to get more quarters for the arcade.

Man has everyone lost their sense of humor? You cannot deny there is some truth to what I'm saying. Gaming addiction is real. But if you are NOT that person then don't take it personally.
Obviously you are NOT that person. You wouldn't sue your parents because they are making you move out of their basement would you? :D

I wish I had time to waste time. Between a full time job, house projects and maintenance, wife, baby on the way, family being local, etc. etc. I have no time for video games. Some day again in the future maybe.

I wish that were true. Games have been far from fun lately. I find more value in smaller indie titles than big budget AAA games that turn your playtime into a grind fest. I want instant gratification, lots of loot and no micro transactions or bullshit pay/time walls.

This is why I quit gaming myself, for all the above reasons. And me being a PC gamer since 1989 when I got my first PC. I gamed on 8 bit computers before that. I still have the fascinations for gaming but the older I get the more I realize my most valuable thing I have is my time and it is a dwindling asset.

Its a lot more than Ubisoft. I can't really think of the last big AAA game I played that wasn't like it. Zelda Breath of the Wild? Same thing, and that is one of the highest rated games in history. GTA V? Same issue.

I have been hopelessly addicted to games, something that has little to no side effects, for 40 plus years. It's a wise choice, no matter what these expurts say. Use common sense and it's nothing but good clean fun.

I've had to stop playing any games that require maybe more then an hour of time. Kids sucking up valuable me time.
Fuckers

So I stick with Battlefield and GTA V mainly

Once the kids are older and can fend for themselves I'll get back to gaming and ignore them properly

:D
This guy gets it. It's still your choice, until they chain you to the chair or something. Take responsibility, and if the responsible ever get their toys taken away because how the derps have ruined it, look out.

It didn't have a nickname Morrowcrack for no reason. I was hit out of the blue with a serious "gotta play more" cycle way after it's release in 2005 and put the visual upgrades mods (clearly one of the best free mods ever released to make the game look unrecognizable from the initial release*) and could hardly believe the masterpiece I was playing, it was one of the best gaming times for me ever. Played every add-on and was a little sad when it was over!

*You ran a program to generate all the textures and geometry updates, it was like compiling code, took forever and had about 5 million permutations of options to try

Agree, it is good clean fun. I don't believe any of that propaganda that it makes people violent. Studies show it improves coordination and cognitive abilities. There is a video on YouTube; a guy that has never piloted a plane before, schedules a check flight with a instructor. Takes off, does a bit of flying and does a perfect landing. The flight instructor could not believe he learned everything from a "video game". The cautionary tale is one of wisely investing your time. You can spend money and earn more. You can spend your time, cannot get it back no matter what.

I feel like these types of P2W games are especially focused on people that didn't play a lot of games before they got their smartphone. I'm 35 and have been surprised over the years at the number of people my age (and younger) that have very little experience doing anything with computers outside of Word let alone playing games, but suddenly those people have all these mobile games right there with them all day; I guess they just don't know any better.

I honestly don't get how any self-respecting gamer would play any of these P2W games when previously you'd only expect that kind of "pay to keep playing" behavior in an arcade - and that was because the arcade had an experience we couldn't really get at home. Not the case anymore, obviously.

It may sound simplistic, except a good way to avoid this is to not get too far into any game like that, the best thing to do is to have strong will and have a great alternative game to play instead. I avoid any game that gives me a feeling I'm being manipulated, there are too many good games out there to play that you get to play like you want, not like being a pavlov's dog that will pay and pay to win.

Video games are sucking...You got that right. Haven't been interested in a new game since The Witcher 3.

Good advice, seems there were plenty of violent people and violence before video games, and there will be after. It's best to develop ways to stop them instead of taking away freedom.

Most people enjoy escaping for a while in a world where it's less about day to day minutia and more about having an exciting experience, with no real world complications or consequences, it's normal.

GTA has always been an open-world type of game. The last Zelda game I played was Ocarina of Time which was kind of open-world.

That is a damn good game. I remember when I first got it and would casually look out the window and think "jeez the sun's come up, I better turn this off and hit the hay". I'm currently (finally) playing Fallout 4 and its pretty close.

Yeah. Best game I've ever played. As for Fallout 4, IMO its not even on the same planet as W3. Very disappointed with that one.
