looking for a slim laptop for travel and to replace my old ultrabook. Between the Dell XPS 13 9370 and the Huawei Matebook X Pro. Similar specs both i7-8550u 16gb Ram 512 Gb ssd both around $1500.

What would you guys get?

The Dell, only because I have a previous XPS13 that's rock-solid.

[and even though I'm running an ASUS 2-in-1 with the same specs...]

I agree. Get the Dell. The xps 13 line has been solid for quite sometime. If the mate was cheaper, depending how much I would say look at it

What's the support model for a Huawei laptop? I'm going to assume it's much worst than Dell.

Not much. If I do get it its from the Microsoft Store so I am getting the $29 ADH and extended warranty. I hear the Microsoft Store is really good with support.

Make sure that Microsoft is the company that's going to support that laptop. Most times it's the hardware manufacturer. I've dealt with Microsoft hardware support for my Surface Pro and it wasn't that good. Average at best.

Did you do it over the phone? Because I have a few actually B&M Microsoft stores near me that I can bring it to.

Yes, it was over the phone. As usual Microsoft outsources they're phone support to India.

No experience with that MateBook, but I was a MacBook Pro snob for about ten years until trying an XPS 15 two years ago. I sold it for an XPS 13 9370 and am thrilled with this little powerhouse. Great road warrior machine.

Yea I had a surface pro 2 years back and had a lot of issues. The phone and chat support was ass. But I hear going to a B&M is apple store like levels of ease and support.

Just to update this post. I got both and only kept the Matebook X Pro. I had serious reservations about warranty and support but once I started to use the Matebook X Pro I was sold. I really hate Huawei too but the value was just too great to deny.

Pros:
Build Quality (If you love the macbook pros then you will love this laptop)
Screen (not as high pixel count (4k vs 3000x2000) but I love the aspect ratio 3:2, its also brighter)
Performance (Overall the CPU performance for both were equal but the Matebook has a dedicated MX150 as well. Also the Matebook X Pro has a USB 3.0 Type A)
Price (Same exact spec the Matebook X Pro was $1450 and the XPS 13 was $2110 prices include Texas Tax)
Battery Life (a bit bigger than the XPS 13 and in practice usually got 45min to 1 hr more)
weight (a bit heavier than the XPS 13 but not much)
Size (They managed to fit a 13.9" screen in almost the same footprint as dell did with the XPS 13)

Cons:
Webcam placement (I dont need to use the webcam so it really didnt bother me, could be a pro for some)
Keyboard (its good but not as good as the XPS 13)
TB is only 2x vs 4x for XPS 13
Support (microsoft store is your best bet and an extended warranty)

Overall for $650 less if you can deal with the webcam to me the Matebook X Pro is the far superior value, you could also buy a fat extended warranty and still be $500+ dollars under an XPS 13.

TL;DR Matebook X Pro is a Macbook for windows done right and is $650~ less than the XPS 13.

I have used both the Matebook X and the new Gen XPS 13. I would get the XPS 13, just felt overall better. But... If you want to save some coin then the Matebook X is no slouch either.

The matebook x is completely different and is not in the same class as the XPS 13 and the X Pro.

Get the Matebook X Pro. from the Microsoft Store with the PerformanceGuard warranty. They'll take care of you at the store instead of having to deal with phone support or Huawei directly. It's very much like taking an Apple product to the Apple store for support.

Pretty much what I did. Got the Matebook X Pro after I came back from vacation and got the XPS 13 before I left from Costco. I had to use a dongle way more often with the XPS 13 vs the Matebook X Pro and I just found the overall experience superior to the XPS 13 for a lot less. IMHO there is nothing the XPS 13 does better especially not $600 better, while there are many things the Matebook X Pro does better. I hate that I like it so much because I really dont like Huawei and their business practices but they made the perfect Laptop for my needs at the best price on the market.

EDIT: I just wanted to make sure the pricing was still the same, looks like since I bought the XPS 13 there have been some deals that brought it down to $1600 before tax, so if you can get that deal the XPS is only $300 more. Still I personally believe the Matebook X Pro is the better laptop even if the pricing was the same, it being cheaper just makes it superior.

The Matebook X Pro. is great, especially at its price point. To get a XPS13 with 16GB of RAM and an i7 you pay at least $400 more and the only thing it has over the MBX Pro. is Windows Hello via its IR camera and possibly more lanes to its Thunderbolt ports.

The finish is another point. I kind of prefer the carbon fiber palm-rest of the XPS13 over the aluminum of the MBX Pro..

Thats a valid opinion, I did find the carbon fiber palm rest a bit more comfortable than the aluminum of the MXP, the edges are a bit sharp too. I forget about the IR camera because I really dont like to use facial recognition, and I did mention the TB ports. But having a Type A port is a god send. I can keep a logitech unified receiver in and use a mouse on the go without a dongle, also makes using a flash drive much easier, its one of the biggest reasons I chose the MXP over the XPS. Just having the MX150 if I needed is really nice and useful vs no choice.

I just picked up a MateBook X Pro and got it yesterday. I don't have the latest XPS 13, although I've used the previous generation ones at work, and got to play with the newest convertible a few weeks ago.

I'm very happy with the MBXP's build quality. I couldn't care less about the webcam, and happily trade off an occasional nosehair check for the extra screen real estate. I can't speak to battery life yet, but I do like the lack of dongle requirement for day to day use...and the inclusion of the break out box makes the docking station I'm going to use instead an unnecessary purchase. HDMI, USBA, and USB-C passthrough is nice. I can leave that at my desk.

I hate the AC adapter. It falls out of the outlet. I've pinched the prongs and it stays better, but I'd rather have a 3 prong adapter.

Keyboard is nice enough, but it's no Thinkpad. Touchpad has a firm click, and I like that. I disable tap to click, so I'm deliberate with my clicking anyway.

I do like that their software does have an option for running the battery at a lower charge rate. 40-70% for long term life is good enough for what I'm doing, and if I think I'm going to be away from the outlet for a while, I can manually turn it off and give it a full charge.

While I'm unhappy to only get 2 lanes from ThunderBolt, it seems like there's little loss to 4 lanes if using an eGPU and external monitors rather than trying to run it off the internal display according to benchmarks I remember reading back when I had the Aorus 1070.

Doom Eternal's on my list of things to do, but not on this machine. But, the MX150 stands a way better chance at things than the intel-only XPS.

IR camera is a non-issue for me; if anything, I'd rather not have it. I use a limited rights user for my day to day and an admin account as needed. A fingerprint reader is better for me, as I can change my finger more easily than change my face. The Goodix reader used by the MateBook is the same as the one used by the XPS. It's pretty damned amazing, and makes me happy I returned my 7490 with the Broadcom FPR.

As far as peace of mind goes, I'd tell my parents to get the XPS. Dell's support makes me feel way better than the big fat question mark next to Huawei. I don't have an MS store anywhere near me. I picked my MBXP up from Amazon, and got the Square Trade 3 year accidental for it. I'd feel way better with a Dell warranty.
