He most definitely was suicidal.

"Just a broken guy, got a few screws loose I guess. Never really knew it, until now."

His last words were "I think I am going to try out a barrel roll, and if that goes good I'm going to nose down and call it a night."

Ah, I missed that part.

Sounds to me like he maybe turned suicidal as the joyride went on?

Otherwise it makes no sense that he would be so concerned about his fuel levels.

lol maybe he should of played less HAWX and more flight sim X.. he might of actually figured out how to land it. sucks for all the people this guy's retarded stunt effected but glad my tax dollars aren't going to paying for him sitting in jail cell for the next 25 years.
Your tax dollars are being spent on the investigation and now the cleanup of the wreckage
Cost of a 25 year jail sentence:
Prison Term: $30,000/yr * 25yr = $750,000 <paid by taxpayers>

Cost of Depressed Starfox doing a barrel roll:
Aircraft value: $15,000,000 (used) -- $35,000,000 (new) <paid by insurance; passed on to public via ticket prices>
NTSB(/TSA?) investigations: $x00,000 -- $x,000,000 <paid by taxpayers>
Domestic flights becoming even more of a shitshow: priceless.

see thats why I thought it was intentional and re fuel maybe he wanted to make sure he was clear of civilians, only hurt himself?

Back to the main point - they're gonna blame this whole thing on a video game? Fuck, I can learn to make explosives on the internet, I can learn to hide my DNA on the internet, I can learn how to hack on the internet, how to make methamphetamine, print 3D guns, hell I could probably find the answers to any university professor's tests on the internet.

I would hope to god people are smart enough to realize that playing a video game to learn enough about an airplane to get it off the ground is not remarkable.

Listening to the recording, I feel bad for this kid he sounded like he was in a lot of pain. I don't understand what is going on with the youth today.

Well where do you want me to start? A lot of my generation was coddled, insulated from the "harmful" world. Given participation trophies instead of having winners and losers.

Oh then when we get to the real world we find out that no matter how hard we work 99% of the time it goes to enrich someone else and we get paid shit for it. Unless youre one of the super lucky ones to hit it big with some idea oh and you had rich parents to help you fund it...

Waaahhh - if you really are working that hard and that outstanding that your employees is making that much off of your awesome labors then you would be an idiot to not go into business for yourself and keep it all.

If you have the guts. I had my own business for a couple of years. Luckily it was when I was younger, still living at home and had low overhead - it's not as easy as people who have never had to have a significant role in the operations of an enterprise. Which, unsurprisingly, is the majority of Internet keyboard jockeys - business owners are too busy to waste time posting in forums. I no longer have that business because I realized at the time I wasn't ready for it. And I like having paid time off, sick leave, health insurance and all the other benefits that come from helping to enrich someone else who provides those benefits.

And they probably aren't getting as much as you think either.

But you don't have to do that. My parents worked for others but still managed to accumulate significant wealth. My dad got a real estate license and bought and sold land as a second job. My mom's salary went into investments, we lived off of his salary. I didn't have a poor childhood by any stretch, but instead of new cars every 2-4 years and all kinds of useless crap, extravagant trips, eating out on a routine basis (don't think that shit adds up? Keep your receipts and do the math!) that are common in many American households, they instead invested and over the years retired early with millions in assets.

It isn't just hard work, but what you do with your hard work that is going to determine success. How many Hollywood types make 10's if not 100's of millions but go bankrupt on a regular basis? If you send more than you make your going to run out of money. It shouldn't be a complicated equation but it's amazing to me how often people discount stuff like that.

So yeah, stop complaining about others holding you back. Or if you really want to change it - then by god either get a better job or create your own. But enough with blaming other people for lording over you. There's nothing restricting you to your current employer or your current situation. If you don't like it, change it! America still is the land of opportunity - otherwise we wouldn't have such a problem with illegal immigration. There seem to be a lot of people hell bent on destroying that tho, so you better get on it and ditch the pity party.

I own my own business. Until recently owned two aircraft, sold both and now one a different one. Thats all from my side work which is my own business. I have lived like a pauper to be able to start it. So I wasnt complaining about myself.

Yes its possible but you missed the point. Very few of us are that lucky.

Most of us are not so lucky with crippling debt or supporting family members or families. I never married. Probably never will at this point and if I do everyone will probably judge me for marrying a 20 something thats young enough to have kids...

I made trades. I worked my ass off to get where I am. But some of my friends have also worked their asses off and are nowhere near as lucky as I have been. I was lucky to have some opportunities, opportunities not everyone gets.

Imagine if that had happened like 6 months after 9/11.

Most pilots assume that as well. You wouldn't believe how many BFRs I have given where the pilot was shocked when the stall warning horn goes off at 80kts during a turn from base to final...

A stall can occur at any airspeed. I think even Flight Sim Pro could show this. It can even occur in nose low situations. There is an angle of attack called the critical angle of attack at which smooth airflow over the wing ceases (which decreases lift causing the stall). Stall characteristics vary based upon wing design.

Here is a good way to demonstrate a stall at higher airspeeds than normal (we CFI's call this an accelerated stall). CAVEAT: I am providing a generalized procedure for use in a simulator ONLY.

  1. Slow the simulated aircraft to its cruise speed.
  2. Ensure flaps are retracted.
  3. Roll into a 50 degree bank.
  4. Reduce power to idle.
  5. Continually add back pressure to the yoke (pull nose up in non pilot speak) until the aircraft stalls.
  6. Note airspeed at which aircraft stalls. it will be higher than if you did a power off stall. Or a power on one even.
  7. Recover.

Here is a good video showing the stall progression from the inside of the wing to out. Most small aircraft are designed to stall wing root out for increased control effectiveness and recovery during stalls.

Notice how the stall starts at the wing root and progresses outward. Also notice how rapid the onset of the full stall is and how lift immediately decreases and how gravity brings that nose down because nothing is holding it up anymore.

Sorry...CFI...cant resit a teaching moment.

Is the Q400 capable deep stall because of the high elevator? I'm no pilot, but I've read that can get pretty interesting. Probably moreso for an amateur.

For years i was pretty sure i could setup a.b17 for take off. It was a lot of steps.

Well in theory any plane can get into a deep stall...

But typically a t-tail jet with a swept wing is more susceptible to a deep stall. The uneven airflow over the wings during a stall is turbulent and blankets the t-tail causing a reduction in effectiveness of the controls. This can lead to an unrecoverable stall condition due to reduced or eliminated elevator effectiveness. Without sufficient elevator command the only way to recover is to either dip one wing (unlikely due to reduced aileron effectiveness), shift the CG forward, or maybe try something with asymmetrical thrust if that's an option.

Canard based designs are also more susceptible to deep stalls (I haven't flown any personally).

In theory a t-tail turboprop like the Q400 is less susceptible because of the prop wash over the wing. But if he were to have a high enough angle of attack I could see the elevator entering that shade area where you could get a stabilized deep stall.

You know, it sucks for the airline and everything, but I'll take one of these types of suicides over the active shooter / suicide by cop. At least he didn't take anyone else with him. I feel like the guy would have lived to be a legend, you know, had he lived.

This was far better then that German(?) co-pilot that deliberately locked out the pilot then crashed a plane full of people into the Alps a couple years ago because, IIRC, he had depression.

The sad thing for Mr Russell if they could have talked him into landing it, a decent lawyer could likely have gotten him off due to mental illness. He could have spent a few years in an institution and went on with his life.

Was not to far from the crash, flew right over us. I was thinking wtf, is that jet doing so low?
But I do wonder, can we get some kind of 2 factor authtication to start these things?

Its not like anyone can walk in off the street and steal a airliner. There is a ton of security around major airports and you typically wont find these at the smaller ones were security is proportionally less restrictive.

This case was an insider threat just like this guy: https://www.cnn.com/2018/08/13/us/utah-plane-crash/index.html

I think it's unfortunate that they're labeling 'video games' for his flight sim training. Some pc flight sims have been really advanced for some time now. They're far from being just a video game. They can be as simple or complex as you want. I grew up on MS flight sim but was totally blown away when I tried X-Plane. At this point complexity depends more on user and their rig than the actual program.

Oh well, it was probably just a matter of time until someone GTA'd one. I remember the first time I found the airport in V and pretty much did the same except of course parachuting out. Never want to see someone do it real but was pretty hilarious in the game.

Despite playing MS Flight Simulator 2004 for a few years, I gotta admit that I'm pretty bad at the acrobatic flying lessons in Los Santos Flying School.

USAF won't allow it, they're a recruiting tool.
I didn't say they would get banned - I said get ready for the calls to ban them. Of course, only allowed for use by the responsible and appropriate government agencies!

No you wlil need a license first and have to go through a 3 day waiting period before you can buy.

Most untrained people wont experience effects until 4-6Gs.

LOL at 5 1/2, maybe 6 G's max they'll just pass out and die so yea, untrained folks won't feel any geForce effects after they've passed out

Yup. This is why we need legal and publicly available suicide services! Life is not all that great , it contains plenty of suffering and its nice if people can make a quick exit when they want to! It also allows people to vote with their lives if they don't like their government.
