While early hints of a bad port suggested a rocky launch, Monster Hunter: World has managed to release with much success: Steamcharts is currently showing over 250,000 players for the game, making it not only the biggest Japanese game ever released on the service by concurrent players, but also the biggest launch on Steam of any game on the platform this year.

Prior to MHW, the biggest day-one numbers for a new game this year came from Kingdom Come: Deliverance, which pulled in nearly 96,000 players. For comparison's sake, Final Fantasy 15, another big Japanese RPG, had a peak of only 29,729 Steam players on release.

First pc version of MH and had to convince myself not to get it. The PS4 Pro version really isn't that bad, and being hr 450 with 1400 hours is hard to go to the PC version.

So I take it its a great game?
mostly different genre, ppl are tired of playing the same crap over and over, so when they have something different ( and polished ), well they buy it.
monster hunter by concept was a great PC like game, no idea what it took capcom this long to bring it to PC.

Disgraceful DRM, 60fps cap, forced motion blur, console textures, the list goes on. This is my biggest disappointment in recent memory.

It's very subjective. It's a cruel game series that very much rewards a hard worker. Not everyone would like it, but the people who do absolutely adore it. Of all the game series I've ever played, it's the one I love to introduce people to but completely understand if they don't want to play it.

Somethings to take into consideration when playing the MH series

  1. The game has "Hunter" in the name for a reason. You learn the patterns and even nuances of the things you are hunting. I suggest doing solo play for a while to learn how monsters act.
  2. You have to work to get good gear, and there's a lot of grinding. There's a RNG for items also, so be prepared to hunt the same thing 10+times to get pieces for your weapon or armor.
  3. Do all the side little things, it's overwhelming, but learn about the little farm thing, mine a lot, pick all the items up.
  4. Money is EASY to make in the game the later you go on, just sell things
  5. Get ready to be knocked on your ass a lot. You are fighting things that would be over 2 tons or heavier in real life, and the designers take that into consideration. Get ready to be knocked down repeatedly until you learn monsters patterns.
  6. Expect one of the most half ass online systems. I love Capcom, but their lobby/online system sucks donkey balls.

I do hoe you try it, it's a lovely series. But if you try it and don't like it...that could be expected.

I wanted to get this but with BfA launching this week I won't have time to play anything else for a while. I might pick up the game later when on sale if I still feel like it.

There is no forced 60 fps cap. I could do without the DRM. Textures are a strange bird and not unlike an elder scrolls game, some textures are amazingly sharp like meals for instance, and sometimes you have rocks or pieces of wood that are a blurry mess.

To me the only egregious complaint is the negative mouse acceleration, mouse controls really blow, use a controller till they add raw input or something. As far as gameplay goes though this is one of those games you can sink 300 hours into.

It has brilliant gameplay and the different weapons can drastically alter your playstyle which allows for some variation, but at the end of the day, you are just killing the same monsters over and over again, first in Low Rank, then again in High Rank, and then to grind for crafting materials and upgrades while you wait for G-Rank to arrive. It's pretty subjective as to how enjoyable that will be in the long run.

However, my major problem with the game is that your passive "skills" are determined by both the armour pieces you wear and by the gems which you slot into those armour pieces; not by gaining XP and assigning skill points in a tree as you might be used to from other RPGs.

The armour is relatively easy to craft and gets you halfway to the skills you want, but a lot of the most desirable gems are only obtainable as extremely rare drops from killing monsters or through a completely RNG "melding" process where you destroy some crappy gems that you don't want in the hope of getting something better that you do want.

That means your character's "build" is entirely dependent on RNG, and you may never be able to achieve the build you'd like if the necessary gems don't drop, regardless of how much you level up. I've pretty much stopped playing on PS4 purely because of this.

Console players often resort to "save-scumming" which is basically an extremely tedious method of gaming the melding process to get the gems you want by backing up and restoring save files, and it's just fucking stupid.

I actually have to argue that monster has the truest form of experience and levelling in a game . Not upping your stats as a character, but rather upping your skills so much that you don't do the same dumb thing, aim for the toughest spots, and approach problems with different solutions. That's why I love it.

One thing I miss from mhfu2 was you couldn't so all quest online. There was a stupidly hard quest that had to be done solo and it gave a visual reward that acted as a cool "holy shit that guy achieved this" mark.

"Disgraceful DRM"
Arguable

"60fps cap"
Optional

"forced motion blur"
Tied to framerate, but I'll give you this one.

"console textures"
What does this even mean?

"the list goes on"
Well don't stop there, please tell us more.

"Disgraceful DRM"
Arguable *I have to disagree man. Can you make an argument for why this needed additional DRM? It's already on steam.

"60fps cap"
Optional * If this can be unlocked then thats awesome and the first I've heard of it. It's my biggest complaint outside of forced moition blur.

"forced motion blur"
Tied to framerate, but I'll give you this one.

"console textures"
What does this even mean? *I've been reading reports of trash textures. Is this not true?

"the list goes on"
Well don't stop there, please tell us more.

No 21:9 support
No DoF option
Save game delete bug
Shitty mouse support
Network/Multiplayer issues (This is not unheard of actually and almost expected these days)

I didn't purchase the game, so I'm going off reports of others. If this info is not true, good, and if they remove DRM, allow me to disable motion blur, I'm in and will purchase at full price.

The thing that prevented me from getting the game is the atrocious keyboard mapping system. You can't bind certain keys and some keys you can't unbind. I play left handed so WASD doesn't work for me. Its really lazy dev programming to not allow the entire keyboard to be usable or to hard bind keys that you can't change. I spent an hour trying to configure the game and just couldn't do it.
