Speedier Broadband Standards? Pai’s FCC Says 25Mbps Is Fast Enough

I can't stand this guy anymore than the next guy, but I agree that 25Mbps is a decent "base speed". You can still visit any site in an instant and stream HD video.

Our country has a boner the size of a galaxy for proclaiming that we're numero uno and yet we're content to settle on the technology of yesterday

Huh

How did these idiots conflate a "100mbps minimum standard" with "reaching more people"? They have nothing to do with each other.

For all the 'outraged' people. It was your pro-NN companies that ended up being the censor queens, and let me know when the first death from no-NN takes place. Clueless sheep just parroting what they hear.

He's gonna have to stoop lower than that to make US broadband options look good. I'm in a developed neighborhood off of a heavily-trafficked main road within the city limits of a town of ~130,000 people and AT&T can only sell me up to 18 Mbps internet. I can get Comcast 360 Mbps all day long, probably even gigabit, but Comcast is my only option for anything above 18 Mbps and I'd be surprised if I could even get that 18 Mbps consistently since it would be over a POTS line.

I just ran a mobile wireless speed test and it was 12 down / 9 up Mbps with an 80 ms ping 40 miles away! LOL. NOT AN OPTION.

What a tool.

Not to worry friends. These clowns will be out of the White House here in a few years.

In the meantime ... move to Austin for Google Fiber or something. I hear that's a pretty cool spot to live.

I HATE you guys... guess what?? The only thing I can get here is 6Mbps down and 512Kbps up. 25Mbps would make me giggle like a schoolgirl.

Sure, go ahead and raise it. It's not like we can even hit the current target anyway, lets shoot for the moon. We have reached the point where my cell phone, with 4G LTE, is officially faster than my home DSL line. And where I live, DSL is all thats available.

I thought this was America? 100M overkill? If anything we should be aiming for 1G in every home.
Too low...

10Gbit ethernet cards are sub $50 on ebay. Home lan is 10Gbit and I paid about $320 for my switch. I just picked up some Gen3 Mellanox (connectx-3) cards for like $22 a pop, SFPs for under $5 a pop and will be wiring up wife's desktop because I plan to dump my legacy 1G switch. It's only useful really for POE/wifi access points.

35/5 it would be a much better entry point. That would be entirely adequate for the average person. That said 25/3 isn't horrible that what I have now and am pretty satisfied overall, but yeah there are situations where faster would be nice primarily just large game downloads though or anything upload related since that is archaic still by comparison.

The only land line availability i have is 768kb down 128kb up...and att wont replace the phone line

Recently moved to a rural location. Got lucky and can get 12mb down via a rural telco DSL service. Tech said if I was a mile further away from the magic box, would be lucky to get any Internet. Oddly, 12mb is twice the speed AT&T could provide in suburban OKC via DSL. When they replaced the POTS with fiber, speed went to 50mb for the basic service. Faster available. That happened a few months before I finished moving.

12mb seems good for gaming but sucks for updates or downloading new games. Seems most game companies assume you have the same speed they do inside their buildings.

Don't think it really matters who is running the circus in Washington, the ISPs contribute to both major parties. Until laws are passed that punish ISPs that don't meet the minimums, won't matter what the standards are set at. And since both parties are getting money from ISPs, good luck with that.

Same boat, except my city is 30k , but also pretty developed (we have a 20+ roller coaster theme park within walking distance). However my internet choices are...18Mbit DSL or up to 2Gbit/s Comcast....so, it's pretty much "comcast or nothing".

Some of you sound really beat down and meek about your internet speeds. Some of you are even saying people don't need this or that ... wtf? Worry about yourself and keep that attitude under your MAGA hat. Jesus Christ.

Don't settle, aim high. I moved for Google Fiber and would do it again if need be.

American created the Internet ... understand that.

The facts are, big business is playing games with all of you. Give you less, charge you more. If you have friends, Family, etc .... have them cut their cord, get them on Netflix, Hulu and the best Internet option your town has.

Also, some of you might want to consider your digital future. If your young and in the process if seeking a job, even out of state. Maybe some of you are wanting to move, buy a home, new apartment, etc, then put real effort into the consideration of the digital future. It's not going to kill you if you have to drive 3 - 4 hours to see your parents / grandparents. Some of you can even afford to Fly home.

I will never live anywhere that has a data cap or bs internet.

Wiring the rest of my house with CAT6a. I have a Ubiquiti XRouter Infinity and EdgeSwitch 16XG which have SFP+ and Copper 10G ports.

Att doesn't even offer me 25 mb lol 3 up 20 down is the fastest I can get.......and I live 300 feet from their building.

For many people it's not just the crap speeds,, but also the newer and seemingly increasingly more stringent bandwidth caps...

This.

There are people at my office who do not even have internet at home, just the data service they have on their phone.
Others have the slowest/cheapest service that can get, because all they do is email, facebook and the occasional amazon order.

25Mbps is good enough for a couple video streams. Most people are fine with 720p streaming, and think 1080p look amazing.

Cox recently boosted my speeds to 100mbit down, and 10mbit up.
I'd be happy with half that speed if they would drop the price by 30%.
I don't use that much bandwidth 99% of the time.

We have 50 people in my office, yet all we have is 100mbit up/down.
I rarely see it averaging more than 10% usage.
Performance is fine, even when we have several people streaming soccer games last month.

Everyone is going to have diffrent needs but the standard should be 100mb without question.

For as much as we pride our self on our tech advancements we sure do a good job of not getting it into our people's hands.

Personally I have 2 4K televisions, 2 google homes, a bunch of smart devices, 2 external cameras running through an Arlo, 2 tablets for VR, 2 Xbox consoles, 2 desktops and 2 laptops. My watch switches to Wi-Fi when I am home.

I use a TON of data just in updates and remote access. Not to mention my plex when I am out and about.

For me 25mb would be impossible.

On 250 its ok.

I know people with kids who have more crap on their Wi-Fi and they complain 200 isnt enough and for the average American family I can safely say 25 isn't enough.

Comcast Gigabit Pro . . . they waived all fees and paid the over 10k to pull fiber to the demarc and then also in my house to my office as well . . . .

It that service still $300 a month?

They must have had you agree to a certain amount of time to keep the service so they can get a return on that investment.

Nonsense. You're not typical, and even you don't need 100mbps.
Whatever the cost to me is of this "give everyone moah bandwidth to watch pron with" is, I don't want to pay it.

I max out out at 20 mbps 1 mbps up with centurylink because there is no competition here. All the people in big cities foolishly think everything is the same everywhere else.

we are winning... coal jobs are back...and the horse and buggy companies are on the rise too.... BETA MAX is about to launch this fall. we pay RUSSIA billions to get us into space.... WE ARE SO WINNING!!!

30 Down/10 Up as an average.

Up speed was killing us at home when were stuck on 1Mbps. Now we have 20Mbps up and it makes a big difference.

You don't need to move to Austin ($$$$), I live in the county near Texarkana,TX and Comcast has gigabit plans. I don't like caps but I never hit 1TB a month anyway. ;)

I would bet that most if not all parents of [H] members as well as my own mom and or dad (divorced) don't need more than 25 Mbps. I on the other hand, have symmetrical Gigabit Internet via fiber and would not give that up for anything. When/if we sell our house and move, we will only look in area's with gigiabit/fiber only.

I dont know, i have 25mb.down dsl and its perfectly adaquate for us. I can play a game, my wife can steam video and its fine with room to spare.

Sorry, but it isn't fine. Try to download any modern game and see how long it takes. Try having a few people watching Youtube, see how it works. 25mbps is far from enough for today's usage.

300 down (reality it hits over 420) and 30 up (reality 40) and for $50 extra no data cap from Cox

Someone at the FCC's IT department should create some QOS rules for Ajit that limits him to those specific speeds and slower depending on network traffic then you will see him move on raising those limits. It is always easy for the HAVE's to tell the HAVENOT's to be content with what you already receive.

And replaced with what? Look at the options. Either go socialist or whatever else is on the plate. I would go with whatever else.

All these butt hurt "net neutrality" sheep on here love to cry like this changes anything. Seriously. This only affects the verbiage of what can be called one word instead of another. But you guys have that Bernie cock so far down your throat you cant see that. All of you guys with faster internet than 25 mbps, do you have that because some government guy decided what one words definition is? Or, do you have that because that's what your ISP sells you? Does you current internet package exist because some guy with a big coffee cup can tell dictionary.com what a word means or does it exist because your ISP is competing in your market space? Jesus there are some dumb fucks in here. What packages do and dont exist in various markets falls entirely on the ISPs, this has nothing to do with any of that, instead we have 2 pages full of people with TDS getting triggered.

Funny, normally you people would be screaming to get the government out of IT but in this thread it seems everyone is ok with the Gov forcing companies to operate a certain way (which still isn't what this story is about anyways)

This thread is like if the gov came in and said it's only a sports car above 300 HP and suddenly everyone is shitting on the gov for some reason because their v6 mustang isn't a sports car anymore, even though they already have a 900 HP viper in their garage.

Whatever the cost to me is of this "give everyone moah bandwidth to watch pron with" is, I don't want to pay it.

Do you know how much Comcast made in profits during Q2 in 2017? $3.2 billion. The ISP's are simply hoarding their cash so they can continue to merge together, rather then invest in actual services because why would they? When they lack competition, there's no reason to do so.

Even 25mbps is too much, we need to go back... back to the future!

The previous "clown" was doing very well considering he was a lobbyist for the cable industry, weird how that turned out.

but I don't think waiting hours for a game is part of what they care about in the speed that they say is adequate. Again, for most things it is enough. Too many of you are atypical users I think and don't realize that a lot of people just don't care that much. Can they get email? Can they watch a video? can they get to facebook? you can do all that on 25mb many times over at the same time.

I download tons of stuff and updates and you know what, I'm not raging in my chair because I had to wait 4 hours vs 1. Its the internet, i can find any number of things to do while I wait.

Again, I can play a game, download something, do work, and have my wife be watching hulu or something on 25mb and it all works just fine. we can both stream something at one time no problem.

I just don't get the numbers and pricing depending on area.

AT&T in one area can give you Gigabit for $80 a month but in the next state over or even a different town in the same state you can only get 25mb for $65 a month. Like, what??? I get them not being able to get Gigabit but why are they charging anything near that for that speed?

Internet pricing and speeds are something I just don't get in this country...

Jesus Christ people, in a forum where one day a government has an idea of telling companies what to do with their cafeteria people lose their collective minds and start flipping tables "how does government have a right to tell companies what to do". Now we have a thread with people flipping tables because the government is not telling companies to do something

I would like to see the upload increased. I have 20 down / 1.5 up in my area. When CrashPlan discontinued their consumer service and pushed me to switch, it was going to take nearly 2 months to backup my data assuming I didn't use it for anything else. Maybe something more along the lines of 5 mbps upload minimum?
