I have an environment which has a SBS 2008 machine as the primary server, and a brand new Server 2016 which is meant to be the new primary server. It is not a huge environment, around 30 machines or so, but I need to decomission the old one. The hardware is old and redundant - the new server eats it for lunch - and is also pushing tons of GPOs which are messing all Windows 10 installations as soon as they join the domain.

Did anyone here go through that?

If so, care to recommend some reading?

there are SBS breakout articles out there, basically you add new machine to domain, promote to DC (Do not move roles over at this time), just promote.

Migrate your Mail, Files, programs, etc to the new server.

Flip the new server to PDC, the SBS server will go into license violation mode and stay up for like 16 days or something like that.

If everything is good after 10 days or so, demote the SBS (or remove meta data from AD after its off the network)

And done! Its not hard, just a pain in the butt to do.
