I am curious if the ryzen master software will work with the R5 2500U?

I know that laptop bios' are pretty locked down, so I am curious if this software would work in some capacity.

I know OCing a laptop is a bad idea, but there are a lot of possibilities (undervolting etc...)

Maybe some owners can chime in?

Too bad, but it makes sense. I'm looking forward to sharing some of my impressions once mine comes though the mail these next couple of days.

Really just going to be looking for any way to keep mine clocked higher for longer. I played with one at Best Buy and it enjoys hovering around 2.5ghz.

So how are you liking the system? Mines coming in soon too... AMD Overdrive loves APU's so I guess I'd try that... Or MSI Afterburner for the GPU... Have you tried clocking the Vega 8 GPU? How High did you get?

So far so good. Already dropped it a couple of times and I'm happy to report everything still works just fine.

I'm actually in the process of parting out my desktop PC so I'm working on this guy exclusively at the moment. (So I can upgrade my desktop at a later date)

To my knowledge it can't be overclocked or undervolted. However, I have not looked into this too much. I actually think undervolting would help this laptop greatly. The boost clocks rely on temps staying in check.

Temps typically stay under control, but you have to be careful when used off the desk as the bottom air intakes can easily be blocked. At which point I've certainly seen thermal throttling (98 degree spikes). So it is good to be mindful it has proper ventilation.

Under sustained load you will not likely see core frequencies hit speeds above 3ghz. Mid 2ghz range is more likely over an extended period of time (gaming for me).

That said, it never ceases to amaze me how it can game. Granted, you will have to lower your graphical and framerate expectations. That said, the 2500U should allow you to play any game you wish. Meaning if you lower settings and resolution I haven't run into a game that I couldn't get to run at 30FPS.

Also, you will notice a difference between battery mode and when plugged in. CPU clocks are much better when plugged in. (This is pretty normal behavior for laptops)

Battery life will be worse than a comparable Intel laptop. You may want to change windows power modes to help save battery life when you aren't plugged in (clocks will be slower). You just have to experiment a little bit.

As far as drivers, I have heard there is an up to date Adrenalin driver that works with the 2500U.

I recently force installed a Raven Ridge driver to mine and it has worked without any major hicups. Really helped me with some specific game issues.

Fans can be loud I must admit, but it might be something you can mitigate with Windows power profiles.

So far ao good!

Nice man, mines coming in soon. I'm interested in can you overclock the GPU with MSI Afterburner?

I might mod the fan on the laptop to be 100% all the time to reduce throttling, because that will annoy me more than the noise... You do this by carefully removing the "BLUE" wire from the fan header on the laptop fan it's PWM... It might report an error on boot up but can be bypassed by pressing ENTER no big deal & have higher boost clocks & 60C load temps

I also see a Radeon Software 317 MB Adrenalin Edition 18.8.1 Optional 8/6/2018, is that what you force installed? It appears to be only 2 days old now. I can't wait to try mine out specifically on Forza Motorsport 7, have you tried it yet?

Also how is the Relive performance? Do you have a Youtube Channel?

Here's a thread started here that may help with drivers. Link

The OP's instructions are now a bit outdated as the file is no longer available. I went ahead and followed those steps and it worked for me on the older driver first mentioned in that thread. The OP there would probably be able to point you in the right direction as he is updated to a newer driver.

It would be neat if you were able to mod the fan. Opening it up is fairly easy enough thankfully. Went ahead and threw a 960 evo in mine and kept the HDD. I have a feeling using both drives probably had an impact on my battery life, but it works. I will add that a modded bios may not be out of the question for this laptop. May be worth looking into. Risky of course. I would look to the HP forums. In addition, there are other communities out there that specialize in bios modding. Its something that can be done as a fan project or sometimes for a price. At the end of the day, such bios mods would put your system at significant risk if something went wrong.

Not sure about Forza, but I did play Dirt 4 and I was amazed how well it performed.

I will add if you are ok playing with a game controller, it can mask help to mask potential performance issues.

Never tried Crisis on this guy so I shouldn't say it can play ever game, but I really do find it extremely capable for what it is.

Thanks man yeah Ill post more when I get mine, maybe start a 2200/2500U owner's thread on Overclock.net or something

If you figure out how to overclock/ adjust voltage on a u processor, you'll be the first. None of the usual utilities work. On my dell I can't even get control of the fan without disabling driver signing which trips all of the anticheat software in games.

They also all seem to have a gpu throttling bug that's bios based, and it does not appear to be thermal as I can get mine to throttle without ever going over 70C.

That said, performance is pretty outstanding for what it is. I upgraded tim, upgraded to 16gb dual channel ram and added some tim pads to sink heat to the (metal) case. This lets the processor maintain boost for quite a while even if the gpu decides it will only run full speed for 4 minutes and 10 seconds no matter how cool you keep it...

It seems that tdp limit causes a lot of throttling, thats a real pain. Yeah I saw it only hits 74c or so full max speed on cpu & gpu which isn't too high.

I just can't wait to try mine out, on paper the CPU isn't too bad, it's like slower than a 3720QM Intel but on way less TDP.

Notebookcheck shows the Vega 8 being 8 ROP 32 TMU which makes sense, it's a tad bit slower than the RX 550, but thats pretty neat for an APU with 8 ROP which is pretty amazing to compete with 16 ROP Polaris.

Do you know where I can find a working driver for the vega 8 gpu? Thanks
