Google Pixel and Pixel XL 2

I've got it.. But I'm in Australia so may not help you. Went live for me about 3 hours ago? Bought unlocked, not with a particular carrier, direct from google.

Seems working fine so far, no major issues or hiccups.

Cool, thanks. All phones are bought directly from Google (or at least fully unlocked) in the US as well besides most Verizon users since Verizon has their own variant.

After checking manually a few times today, I just got the OTA on my 2 XL on T-Mobile. So fortunately it didn't take more than a day for me to get the update. It's installing now and I might post back later how its been for me. I'm not expecting a big difference from what I've seen of the update so far though.. I'll try the gesture nav, but I'm not sure I'll care for it much. I think it's ridiculous if it's true about Pixel 3 owners being forced to use gesture nav though, as they should have the option for the old nav bar just like current Pixel owners do, regardless of how much more intuitive Google thinks gesture nav is for new users. Software features and options should be the same across all Pixel phones as long as the hardware supports it.

Just checked manually and Pie is ready for me. Downloading now.

EDIT: Running smoothly. Phone seems quicker, snappier. Me likey, so far! (y)

My 2XL was already really smooth. What exactly is smoother now?

Mine was already smooth before the update too, but the animations definitely seem like they've been tweaked somehow to me, like maybe there's less dropped frames now or something.

I'm gonna force myself to use the gesture nav for a day at least to see if I can get used to it. I think I like the swipe right to switch between apps a tad better than the double-tap you had to do before. I don't like how it's more awkward to get to split screen apps now though. You should be able to just hold in on the preview and drag it up/down from there, but it seems like you have to hold down on the icon at the top to open a new menu to do split screen.

Grr, at least two of my apps are incompatible with 9.0

I'm on a Pixel so I get the latest updates but now the app devs are letting me down. Doesn't feel smoother (there weren't any framedrops before anyway) but the animations are quite different

The animations in and out of apps and screens feel smoother. Things just feel smoother.

I noticed that the over usage of my RAM from the beta has been resolved, thank god.

I got Pie yesterday [Pixel 2 128GB]. The volume control page with the 4 volume sliders is horribly buggy. They did not split ring volume into ring and notifications, still a pita that I can't have notification sound without ring (well, I can manually select the silent sound as the ring tone, pita method). Really don't like the new app switcher, so hard to find apps when many are open (the Oreo one worked great, what was the problem??). Finally shows battery charge state on the lock screen like every other phone on the planet. I actually kinda want to revert to Oreo, I can live without the battery %. I hope they fix the VOLUME CONTROL on the PHONE jiminey crickets on a pogo stick basic functionality. I was told it's been broken like that since DP4. Well here's to hoping that 9.1 or Android Quiche is an improvement, I really feel things went sideways and even backwards. Suddenly they are giving Samsung competition in the shitty software dept.

Biggest annoyance for me so far is that you can no longer manage WiFi and Bluetooth devices from the notification shade, forcing you to leave an app to manage them. Why make a clear regression in UI like that?

I don't like the horizontal app switched either, as you can see less previous apps at once while scrolling through them.

What I do like and welcome:

- Text magnification while selecting/highlighting text (iOS has had this since like iOS 5 I think, dafuq lol)
- Default sound control is for media and much better control of it with the vertical scroll bar right next to the volume rocker.
- BT can now connect to multiple (legacy 2.0 even) Bluetooth devices; my phone often can't connect to my car because I forget to turn off my BT headphones. Well it connected to my car anyways today even with my headphones still connected.

Not sure about the gesture nav yet. If it wasn't so awkward to do split screen with it, it would be much better.

I'm with you on the Bluetooth and wifi changing bullshit. It was very convenient to change WiFi networks.

On that note, I have always been able to connect to multiple Bluetooth devices, on Android 7, 8 and now 9. On both my 6p and Pixel 2 XL.

If you don't use the Pixel Launcher, you can have the old vertical app switcher again.

The notification controls thing is definitely another one of those BS things that come from modern UI "designers" who can't see past their noses. Managing BT and WiFi from the shade didn't get in anyone's way at all but for the sake of removing a tiny little triangle in the UI, the sacrifice was made in the name of "simplicity".

Did you guys see MKBHD's video about why he doesn't use the Pixel anymore? I watched it but I don't really notice the lag and framerate drops.

Anyone using a Oneplus 6 to confirm?

I use Nova, but still have the horizontal app switcher. Is there a setting to get the old vertical switcher?

Yeah, I saw that too and dunno wtf he's talking about, as I haven't had any performance issues on my 2 XL at all. I'm sure the OP6 is just as fast or faster though considering it has better hardware while running a lower resolution and pretty stockish Android.

Just got my Pixel 2 XL yesterday. Love how empty/standard it comes and without all the other bullshit i dont need and hate.

Still have my iPhone X as my daily driver as i love the phone but this Pixel 2 is great for work use. Best of both worlds for me :)

BTW, if anyone of my [H} bros need a haircut in the burbank CA ( los angeles ), check out my IG page , @ cut_by_arbi

:)

Hold down on wifi in the notification shade to manage wifi.

Yeah, that's always been there. They removed the drop down menu in the notification tray though so you're forced to leave an app to manage WiFi/BT.

Posted this in another thread...

PIE basically ruined my Pixel.
Messenger is almost unusable. Texts dont send, app crashes.
HOT, my phone never got hot. Now with normal use it does.
Startup is slowwwwww as is app launching.
Terrible experience for me.

I would do a backup, blow the phone away, download the latest rom from Google and sideload it. A fresh install is most likely needed.

Seems like all of the worst problems are exclusive to the XL model. After upgrading my non-XL to Pie, the only problem I have is that buggy 4-slider volume control. Ring and Alarm somehow affect each other randomly.

Anyone else having issues with the fingerprint sensor slowly getting less responsive? Like it'll take 2-3 attempts, if it works at all? I've wiped it down so I don't think it's dirt... I had this issue on my Nexus 6p too, my first one I returned and it was swapped for a refurb that worked great til i dropped it on its face on concrete tiles (nevermind the overheating/signal drop issues...)

Which build are you on right now? I think the May and June Oreo builds had a bug where waking with the fingerprint reading had a lag. July was supposed to fix it and I don't know if they ported the fix to Pie yet.

Custom kernels also have the fix.

I'm running Pie. Latest security update for August. I didn't have any May/June lag though :\.

9to5 Google has been staying current in updating information regarding various degrees of sluggishness being reported by Pixel 2 XL models.
https://9to5google.com/2018/08/16/google-pixel-2-xl-lag-reports/

Artem Russakovskii is the founder of AndroidPolice.com and APKMirror.com. He encountered severe lag on his Pixel 2XL. After receiving a replacement unit a Google PR person and an engineer went to his home to investigate the problematic phone.

My Pixel 2 (regular) has been lagging pretty badly in the past couple of months. Especially when I have around 8+ apps opened and I'm switching to chrome or maps etc. I did just update to Pie when it first came out and it has been a bit better. Still see some lags here and there but nothing horrible yet. The only thing I didn't really like about the Pie is the vol feature now, but will prob. take some getting used to.

I am using Novalauncher since day one. Will have to double check what apps are using most cpu and ram.

Anyone use Trusted Face on Pie? I used it on Oreo all the time, but now on Pie, it will only work for a few minutes after relearning my face again, then will never check for my face again to unlock the phone.

While I haven't experienced any lag on my post-Android Pie Pixel 2, my battery life has suffered a bit. It isn't exactly night and day, but I'd estimate that my battery life has decreased by 15-20% since the update.
The background monitor thing also seems to be a total crapshoot. It names a new program seemingly every day and if you remove them from that list, the same ones rarely reappear. They're also almost never Google-branded apps even though those are the ones supposedly actually using the most juice. I also seem to get repeat notifications here and there as well.
Hopefully subsequent updates clear things up a little. I kinda like the look of things, but it feels like the smallest UI update in a long time.

Battery life has been about the same for me on Pie; I've got 6+ hours SoT in a charge recently just looked I was getting on Oreo at least.

Has anyone been able to pull the September OTA yet? Still nothing on my 2 XL in T-Mobile and it seems not many at all have got it otherwise from what I see in the comments on other tech blogs about the update. Hopefully it fixes the face unlocking issue I just posted about above even though there's nothing in the update notes about it.

Yeah I got the Sep update. Almost nothing changed. Retail Demo Mode and battery charging (affects nobody). Some bluetooth connection improvement, and a car audio volume improvement. Just a ton of security fixes mostly. Volume adjustment panel still buggy af.

Can you test trusted face and see if it stops working after a few unlocks? After posting about it above, I found this post for it on the Pixel community forum and posted there as well. It seems to affect most phone, but not many are complaining about it probably because not many people use it.

Also, what carrier are you on?

I've actually been able to update at will for the last 7-8 months. Hitting the update button actually does something now. I got the Pie update minutes after articles posted it was going to be live that day.

I'm still having weird battery drain issues in spite of the September update. Nothing huge, but definitely enough to notice. At the end of the day my battery is usually in the 40's while it used to be in the upper 50's or 60's. I thought it might be related to Google Fit, but disabling that didn't seem to affect anything. Still seeing random programs showing heavy background use once and then never again, too. For all I know it's just slow planned obsolescence.

It's probably more app related than the OS considering several apps are updated daily as well, but that's always been the hardest thing to pin down on Android.

I've been trying to keep battery wear to a minimum on my phone since my last few phones have needed their battery replaced 18 months or so into ownership. I've been doing this by only charging my battery up to 80% or so when I get to work in the morning (instead of charging to 100% overnight like I did and most others do) and then using it normally, which has always got me through the day and following night just fine. But I accidentally left my phone on the charger yesterday and got it up to 100%, so I ran it totally down to see how it still does:

I'd say 7.5 hours SoT over a 27 hour period is pretty good. Most of that screen time was in Youtube/Youtube TV and the browser, with some light gaming on Clash of Clans for 30 mins or so, and it was on WiFi other than some short trips to the store and to work. I listened to Podcasts (screen off over BT) for about 90 mins total during that charge as well, which is probably what at least half of that "held awake" time is for.

Edit: I just noticed that I beat my max of 7:12 hours SoT from before on Oreo, so I'd say if anything Pie is at least as good if not better than Oreo in terms of battery life in my experience.
