Square Enix is recruiting a VFX designer for the Final Fantasy VII Remake, and a new job listing suggests the title may be moving even further from the RPG roots of the original: “a position that will carry the core of Final Fantasy VII Remake that is being remade as an action game” and “a chance to challenge the world with a new Final Fantasy action.”

…keep in mind that this doesn’t mean it won’t be an action RPG, as “action game” is often used as a general term in Japan. Required skills are VFX experience, MAYA and Photoshop experience, and experience creating 3D game effects. The following skills aren’t required but are welcomed: experience on creating effects with Unreal Engine 4, experience on creating effects for CG movies, and After effects experience.

I'll care when the game actually has a glimmer of being a real game

The game is in development/production, not sure why you're making that statement. Once KH3 ships, it will get full studio support. Until then, it's still getting worked on, just not yet with a 200+ person studio (s) .

So a Crisis Core sequel, essentially?
Crisis core was still more RPG than action unlike FFXV at least. Either way both were enjoyable combat systems and if handled correctly can still do FFVII justice.

More or less worked for XV, that being said I'd prefer a more throw back style. There hasn't been a good high budget turn based JRPG since Lost Odyssey which was what, 10 years ago?

lol, couldn't be any worse than the Advent Chidren movie....or can it?

Any other good unreal action rpgs to compare it to?

This. FF7+8 with better graphics.
May as well just play it with mods but I'm playing 8 on ps2 lol.

I played through VIII again last year, still probably my favourite.

I'm still holding out for a true modernization/remake of FF6. Seeing this I'm not sure i want FF6 to get basterdized.

I hope this game doesn't suck, and I doubt that will be the case.

Que the nerds complaining. No matter how great of a game they make the nerds will bitch.
Yes, I'm sure fans of FFVII will be to blame when the "remake" turns out to be so little like the original that the reason they are fans is made irrelevant. Clearly, it is those fans, not the developers, who made the decision to like something that just can't possibly be made (a game that fans of FFVII will like). It's not like FFVII was an RPG or anything, or a turn-based one.

Slapping the veneer of a franchise onto something doesn't automatically make it good or relevant to fans of the prior products. It doesn't mean the people who liked the product are the ones who are to blame, either. Take a look at the CD-i Zelda games and then explain why those who really liked the NES and SNES Zelda games are to blame for those.

Clearly, also, it is the fans of FFVII who are to blame for Square's sadistic tease routine that has been going on for a ridiculously long amount of time.

Hard pass. It's NOT a remake at this point, especially if its an entirely different genre. Want sales? Give us the same gameplay and battle system with modern graphics, than throw in a few new dungeons and some new items, armor, weapons, and materia. Done.

Oh please, it'll still sell like crazy, still be good. It's fine. It's a remake, not a remaster. Look at the new RE2 coming out. Game needs to be updated anyways, played the original a year ago and it hasn't aged well nor was it nearly as fun as it was new 20 years ago.

I think too many people have the nostalgic colored glasses on and don't realize it. FFXV was a blast and I'm personally looking forward to the new FFVII.

Yes FFXV was a blast and I highly enjoyed it. I also look forward to FFXVI being fairly similar to that. However for something like FFVII or FFVIII all I want is the original game with modern graphics and possibly a little cleanup of some of the more broken things from the original. I don't want a new game just wearing the name. I also don't want a bastardized version that cuts out many of the things that made FFVII what it was because they aren't socially PC today. I will gladly pay $60-$150 depending on what all it comes with for that. I will absolutely not buy a game that is simply using the name of the game and is "loosely based on the events" of the game, has a completely different battle system and is basically a modern piece of overly PC garbage.

I think my major Issue with this remake is probably that 90% of actual people that played the original(and are fans) will hate this as its not really a remake, compared to a completely new game using just the same story(if even that)…...and of course in all probability you will be having people that didn't play the original when it came out like IGN saying "10 out of 10 BESTGAME EVER".
…..
Can this game be made into an amazing action game...….Sure Crisis Core proved that
…..
..but, no one asked for that, all people really wanted was a new graphical engine with modern game production, not a complete genre swap. Its like when Nissan finally remade the Skyline brand originally it was a $30k Japanese Muscle Car that they turned into a $100k supercar, no one really asked for that, all they wanted was a Skyline they could buy let alone afford instead of using home equity in the house for a loan.
…..
Enix(2001) I read an article where they were saying Tactical RPGs and traditional JRPGs are dying or dead and after FF10 there would be little semblance of the system in their modern games. I think its more because they don't hit the astronomical sales of some action games they feel they are losing revenue continuing to make games in the traditional sense, but games like Pillars of Eternity, Divinity Original Sin, and D&D remakes from Beamdog and Overhaul Games, have seemed to do well enough.

Yeah but there is a distinct difference between remaking something and completely rebranding it in a completely separate genre, part of the appeal of the early RE games is they were Horror games and while the later ones are playable they just lose what made them special, at what point do we just say hey this is a completely new game in a different genre using the same story. If you are a car fan it would be like Ford saying they are replacing the F150 with a remake of the Mustang that btw is now a truck...………...You may love it and people new to what a mustang is may love it, but I can bet most would hate it....
.....
Also anything past FF10 sucked monkey balls,
FF10.2 - specifically made for females and commercially made to cater to females.
FF11 - ……….ok never as big as it anted to be.
FF12 - The story was bad, the characters were ridiculously portrayed and overacted, half way through the game no one cared to finish because it didn't matter, In fact I can distinctly remember playing just for L.Ash and the sexbunny, because that was all the game had going for it, GF abilities were a broken mechanic most Espers were useless due to the odd triggers for them, and the leveling tile system was oversimplified. Its only fun was the gambit system.
FF13 - Female pissed off version of Squall, hit the x button and win because players no longer need to think or try, GFs were transformer rip off dumb, acting and reactions were terrible and very unrealistic and uncharacteristic of a human. Can I shoot Snow yet, whinny little bitch.
FF13.2/13.3 - Because they couldn't screw it up any more than they already did, lets keep going
FF14 - God awefull and beyond redemption the state the game was released - they redid it and yes it was passable and good to an extent.
FF15 - Bro, Bro, Bro, Bro, Bro, Bro, Bro, Bro, Bro, Bro, Bro, Bro, Bro, Bro FF, It was OK at best, yes it was fun for what it was, story still sucked and it had its downsides, but yes it was fun.

The Last Remnant was a better FF game than anything that came past 10.

There are Strategic RPGs that are relevant today and have sold extremely well. Take a Game like Diablo 3 as a Diablo game its just terrible there is ZERO RPG in it and its basically a Diablo skinned version of Goldenaxe, Jay Wilson is no longer with Blizzard because he screwed up Diablo and project Titan, If the game would have been something different it would have been fine "A rose by any other name" comes to mind. Taking a game and changing it beyond what it was is not modernizing a game they can modernize the TRPG system without breaking or destroying it, and that is completely their failure if they feel they need to turn it into an action game to make it modern. All this will be is a kingdom hearts battle system with a FF7 skin.

I would also like to remind both of you they are in trouble financially, Tomb Raider, Hitman, Deus Ex is what saved them as well as a few non-FF titles that kept them afloat, The Bouncer, Kingdom Hearts, Life is Strange, Dragon Quest, Sleeping Dogs, Nier, Valkyrie Chronicles, Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger, Just Cause, Drakengard, Fullmetal Alchemist, rereleases exports to different platforms and their mobile series games that are more popular in Asia have saved them, despite the blunders.

Yea, I have no idea why square enix turns their FF series into shit and totally changed the formula but will make b roll games that are in the formula of old FF games. I havent bought any of the new FFs since 13 was a huge bomb for me, but I did buy Bravely Default series and Octopath traveler.
