Sleep deprivation is growing in many developed countries, and researchers from Milan’s Bocconi University believe one contributor is broadband internet. While the team leaned on extensive survey data out of Germany for objectivity, the link doesn’t seem all that farfetched, as higher quality internet could certainly mean increased time spent on devices.

“High-speed Internet makes it very enticing to stay up later to play video games, surf the web and spend time online on social medias,” the researchers concluded. “Given the growing awareness of the importance of sleep quantity and quality for our health and productivity, providing more information on the risks associated with technology use in the evening may promote healthier sleep and have non-negligible effects on individual welfare and well-being.”

Some of knew this 20+ years ago... I mean really, it took researchers on the Internet this long to come to this conclusion? :D

FCC: With the release of a new study showing that broadband internet is causing sleep deprivation, we will be capping all broadband internet to 1mbps speeds to help americans sleep better.

Worst thing you can do is grab your phone when you can't sleep. The blue light from the screen tricks the brain into thinking it's morning. This makes it harder to fall back asleep.

It's too bad that good books, video games, va jayjay and television can't cause sleep deprivation.

I was sleep deprived with 14.4 kbs

Bah. I was sleep deprived before I had internet. As a young teen I'd be up all hours of the night playing whatever video games caught my attention, especially RPGs. My mother worked 3rd shift throughout my entire pre-teen and teenage life so she was never home to make sure I went to bed at a "reasonable" time. I've rarely had more than 5-6 hours of sleep per night since I was 12 or 13.

Well, dial up actually caused sleep deprivation. Because once logged in you had to use the internet for the longest possible time to get the most out it. We had a deal in my country where the telephone company would only bill you for 180 minutes regardless of how long the connection was as long as it started after 6 pm and ended before 4 am the next day. So to get the best value you had to be online from 6 pm to 4 am. And I was, often.

I don't blame it much on the internet but blame it on crappy LCD technology using led lights for backlights I have the same problem with marathon sessions of games.

Pretty sure there's more sleep deprivation with slow internet.. Or is this just talking about twitch?

load of crap. I run out of stuff to surf for sooner ,so get to sleep earlier.

the 33.6-56k era was when I was the most sleep deprived from the internet...

Been experiencing that since about age 13. Those 72 hour gaming binges really did a number on me.

I work two full time jobs.

But we can blame sleep deprivation on internet speed.

It's actually the opposite. Don't have to set the alarm to wake up to babysit my downloads.

Come on, we all know what those people are staying up late looking at, and it isn't social media.
