Anyone send their chips to SL for delidding?

Debating on sending my new 8700k to Silicon Lottery for their delidding and binning service. Comes out to something like 64.99 before shipping.

I figure I'd do this over delidding myself as mainly because

1. I'd have to buy a delid kit (and no way in hell am I doing it with a razor blade or vise grip)
2. Guarantee that I'll be getting back a de-lidded and working chip
3. Cost of a delid kit is still something like 35 dollars + shipping

Anyone ever try it? Good or bad experience?

I know if I had a non-soldered chip, I wouldn't hesitate to sent off the CPU for a delid.

(especially considering the lower CPU prices at Microcenter.. I mean, with the delid-cost it ALMOST breaks even lol)

You're forgetting the cost for the colab ultra/grizzly liquid metal to go on the chip (12-15$) and the permatex gasket maker 5$ (assuming you're relidding it)

I went the kit route, but thats because I was delidding old ivy bridge chips, and I had 4 of them to do, I'm a pro at it now after all the practice so I wouldn't hesitate to go the kit route myself.
Side note: the liquid ultra syringe has enough to delid/relid about 5 chips for that 14$ or so (the permatex tube is probably hundreds, that stuffs cheap).

Yea I forgot about that. I think if you're delidding multiple chips it makes perfect sense to do yourself. I only have one chip. I did buy a kit for the LGA1150 (going to try delidding my own 4770k now that I've upgraded) and I'm not sure if its cost effective along with the associated risks to buy another kit for delidding 1151 chips

If it was me I'd buy the delid tool and do it myself. You get the fun of delidding plus finding out how good it clocks afterwards (binning process).

Bought a delid kit for $45, why pay $65 and mail your cpu around? Used some left over NT-H1 under the lid, AS5 on top, didn't glue lid back down (pita kinda though when clamping the socket), dropped temps from 100C/throttling to 83C max load. Though because the lid isn't glued, the Noctua is actually really smashing the lid on the die, can't get closer than that. I just don't think using the hard to apply thermal goos and glues is worth a couple extra degrees drop. The stock intel "paste" fell out like dirty play doh, I was shocked.

I think my main concern is screwing it up and being out 349 dollars

Right now I've already got my chip pushed to 4.9 comfortably so I may or may not spring for further binning but it'd be interesting to see.

I'm actually going to be going out of town for about a week so I figure mailing it out right before I head out and coming home to a delidded chip would be nice. Again, my main concern is botching it versus having a guarantee. I may go forth and delid my 4770k but even that I'd still have to buy another delid kit for the 1151 chipset from what I understand.

I bought a used i3 7350k on eBay and sent it to SL for delid and binning.

They got it and emailed that they were NOT going to delid it because it had already been delidded using superglue.

Refund enclosed.

They did bin it @ 4.9, observing temps appropriate for a properly delidded k.

Took about a week, and arrived when they originally said it would.

Got what I wanted & paid for.

Worthy.
