US Senator Ron Wyden has penned a letter urging the government to stop deploying new Flash content and replace any existing elements from all workstations and laptops by August 1, 2019. Being that Adobe is ending support in 2020 and security holes will be left unpatched, this would be pretty good advice to follow.

Most of us out here in the real world have stopped using Flash, but government agencies seem to operate in a different layer of spacetime where things move excruciatingly slowly. If no one takes action to kill Flash, it will likely remain active in government for years to come. After all, Windows XP is still in use at some agencies with expensive custom support contracts from Microsoft.
 
Novel idea. How about we stop using U.S. senators instead. If it takes them this long just to propose legislation, then how long after the stake is thru the undead Flash cyber heart should we wait to apply a solution?
 
If a site uses flash, I don't use that site. That's how risky flash is to use. Not worth it.
 
No one is using flash for new development contracts. The issue though is that old stuff is still running it and the money would have to be spent to upgrade it..

It’s not as simple as saying “don’t use it”. No shit.

I very recently had to do homework in a flash site from my textbook's publisher.


The whole thing is an sham. I gotta pay hundreds to buy a new textbook (as opposed to finding a pdf or buying it used) just to get a website license, so I don't fail the course. And THEN I have to do homework on a laggy flash website that deducts points whenever it bugs out.

Yeah well some of my fav porn sites still use flash so guess what, I'ma clickin' "Allow Adobe Flash".
 
How many .gov sites are still using flash is it 1 or is it 10,000. Is this a problem or is it grandstanding? Honestly,I don't know.

I remember many years ago some Senators asked the organizers of the Indy 500 to look into the use of alternative fuels to help America save gas not knowing that Indy cars had been running methanol for close to 50 years at that point in time.

Is this a repeat of that? Or is it a real problem.

I did a quick google search I could find no hard data. Lots of clapping and cheering.

Anybody find a web site with hard data?
 
Politics is about influencing the 99%, they don't care about frivolities like truth or hard data.
Their audience gets their information through mainsteam media.
If you see how mainstream media handles news and facts, you know how little actual facts most people get.
We had our national TV over at our company ones, even of you correct them and point out their mistakes they say something like; it doesn't matter people don't know this.
It's sad really.
I stopped following national TV news, cause every time they handle anything I know something about, they make a total mess of it. So that means they do the same on subjects I know nothing about.

"The fuck" is very likely the agencies in question being denied the budget to upgrade -- probably by the same senator who is now excoriating them for still being on Windows XP. Just sayin'.

Random people have been saying that everyone should stop using Flash for the past several years but people keep using it. Its their own fault if something bad happens to them.
 
is this something similar to a few years ago when folks were saying our computers will be hacked in the not so distant future?
 
Sigh - we have an online training application that was procured a year or so ago and it uses.... you guessed it: Flash!

I don't think it's guidance for what government web sites use, but also for services the government buys from industry - start putting in the requirements that solutions with Flash will not be accepted.

Ron Wyden is against government spending? I've never heard that.

Perhaps not; I have frankly have no idea. But voting to cut the money need to modernize, only to later point to the use of outdated technology as proof of government inefficiency is practically a template for running a Senate campaign at this point.
