Delidding

So I just finished mine. Cool Laboratory Pro for the liquid metal and Permatex 82180 for the glue. Two things really stood out for me during the process;

1. I cannot overstate too much how far the liquid metal goes. A tiny amount goes a very long way. I masked using blue masking tape, and ended up ‘painting’ an area around three times the size of the die using what I thought was an incredibly modest amount of liquid. It also comes out of the nozzle at a very fast rate so don’t apply to the cpu first, do it somewhere harmless to get a feel for it.
2. I used a cocktail stick to apply the silicone and again used tiny amounts to good effect. I suspect that I could delid every processor owned by the users of this forum and still not run out of either liquid.

Overall painless experience. I’ll not get my case until Wednesday evening so unlikely to be able to test this for some time when the build is done.

I'll attempt it once I can order all of the items. But thats good information to know. I look forward to seeing how much your temps drop. My chip isnt too much of a great chip and is really volt hungry so ill keep it at stocks speeds until i can delid it and get the paste on there!

Apparently rockit is now selling replacement milled copper IHS for a better fit/performance after delidding. (accounts for lost z-height from removing the layer of gunk)

I picked up 3 along with the relid guide for their tool, seem pretty well made. If you're going to go to the trouble might as well go all the way ;)

I just went to buy one and they charge another 2x the price almost for shipping to the UK.
Nope.
I decided to see if the NCore kickstarter comes through (already pledged).

I wish they had those a year ago, so I could have done both at the same time.

I just ordered it all from rockit, including the copper ihs. Will post comparison when it all comes in.

The copper IHS makes me drool, but not enough to warrant another $20 spent. From everything I've seen it MIGHT knock off a degree or two under load versus the stock IHS....

So I'm thinking about finally taking the plunge with my 7700K. I can't find a Der Bauer 2 tool in stock (at a reasonable price, I'm not paying $140 on Amazon), so I was planning on getting the Rockit 88.

Has anybody used Liquid Electric Tape to relid? I don't have that or RTV, and I'll likely never find any use for RTV, so I'd like to just buy one thing if possible. I'm going to liquid electric tape over the exposed traces on the surface of the substrate, so I'd have that handy anyway.

I thought Copper didn't do well with liquid metal long term? I like the idea, but I also don't want to have to redo the application every 6-12 months after the Gallium absorbs into the heat spreader. If they can make these nickel plated, then I'm in for one.
