Star Ruler 2 is a massive scale 4X/RTS set in space that supports both the Windows and Linux operating systems (OS). Blind Mind Studios has announced that they are making the entire game and assets open source. The source code files for both OS can be found here, but you're going to have to compile them. I can't wait to see what the modding community comes up with in the coming months and years.

Hi everyone! It's been a few years now since Blind Mind Studios went inactive, so we figured if we're not doing anything with the code to SR2 we should just release it under an open source license. If anyone is interested in seeing how the engine works, or tweaking whatever, the code for SR2's StarFlare engine is now fully available. The repository includes build instructions for windows and linux, but no prebuilt binaries, this does mean everyone can play the game for free, but you will have to put in some extra effort to build it first.

Nice! I love it when companies do this. It usually leads to really neat community developments. Like dark places!

This has the potential to be huge. This much framework already in place is no small feat to make public/free.

Pretty cool but my hopes are muted. Whenever company's release source code there's a bunch of excitement but then years later a whole lotta not much is actually done with it. Turns out making games is really hard.

People have been making mods for this game for a long time. Tons of junk on Steam. The MOD called "Shores of Infinity" totally changes the game to make it OMFG huge 4X type game. Its a pretty new mod so you might want to try it out, but be ready to spend several hours playing the game goes slow.

I wonder what the game can run like on a Threadripper 2990WX, given its extremely threaded nature.

I can imagine such a CPU would allow for 3,000-star galaxies?
