DDR5 memory? When?

I need to upgrade this year, but I just read about DDR5, which promises real improvements over DDR4. So I'm wondering, how long before the major motherboard vendors have boards supporting DDR5 and the major memory vendors start selling DDR5?

OK. I can't wait that long. :( Of course, with the tariffs on Chinese-made computer parts, I may have to put off this upgrade until sanity returns. :confused:

Those tariffs aren’t affecting RAM prices yet. If they ever even do. RAMs been expensive for the last year due to crypto mining and other factors. The tariffs are not to blame in the slightest.
 
When people are still hanging onto ddr3 due to the prices, I don't think even the demand for ddr5 will come before 2020.
 
I do wonder what happens when/if Intel adopts Optane as a proprietary replacement for traditional DRAM. (Assuming 2nd and 3rd gen Optane makes significant advancements to compete with DRAM)

What happens to AMD at that point? And prices. I suppose the mobile markets would still demand DRAM so prices wouldn't be terrible.
 
I hope it would come with some sort of radical upgrade in technology, like Sandy Bridge...

prices won't really effect cpu manufactures, both intel and amd have fabs in the US.

as far as ddr5 goes, 2020 will be when they hit the consumer market since that's when AMD plans to release zen 3 with a new socket to support DDR5. we'll probably see ddr5 in 2019 for the commercial market. we'll also likely see pcie 4.0 in 2019(maybe) for intel if they figure out their 10nm process and 2020 for AMD.
