Reuters is reporting that sources within Blue Origin told them tickets for suborbital flights will cost at least $200,000 each. The New Sheppard capsule will carry 6 passengers and travel to an altitude of more than 62 miles for this low ticket price. However, Blue Origin won't say how much it costs them for each flight, but one analyst believes the number is $10M per flight. This means Blue Origin is losing millions per flight. Also, sources claim the first passengers are going to be company employees and they haven't been selected yet. Mandatory guinea pigs anyone? Good luck!

Blue Origin has completed eight test flights of the vertical take-off and landing New Shepard from its launch pad in Texas, but none with passengers aboard. Two flights have included a test dummy the company calls “Mannequin Skywalker.”

It wouldn't be at a loss if you didn't bring them back. ;)
one launch failure would probably clean outBezos bank account

In line with Virgin Galactic. Time to update my Space Travel Agent cert.

Not too bad, time for that gofundme program to send flat earthers up there so we can put that nonsense to bed

Nah, that nonsense is already known nonsense. No use wasting amazing experiences on nutjobs and trolls. Use the gofundme to send some kids up who would likely otherwise never have that amazing of an opportunity.

hmmm, so is this a way to reward good employees.. or a method to remove those they cant legally fire without lots of issues...

:D

It's wasted on kids. Let's use that gofundme to send Kyle, so he can write a review of the experience for us.
(But Bezos has to bring him back, no matter how big a bribe Nvidia's marketing team offers him.)

If I win the lottery, this is something I would do, just to have the experience. I wouldn't go anywhere else in the world, just into space.

I'm sure with all the contracts from various conglomerayes to carry testing/measuring equipment up each flight, they'll make way more than it costs...

Yeah. Something like that. Even if this is a PoC test the first few flights and they get it down to 1 million a launch later it would still take a long time to recoup costs before making profit.

Like Bezos or not, he is a good business man. He's not throwing money away.

$10m/flight

I doubt that. It might be $10m for the rocket+capsule, which would be in the ballpark of the Falcon 9's (very roughly comparable) second stage. But it's a reusable system, so that'll then be amortized over a number of launches.

At $200k-300k/person, 6 per flight, that'll pay off the hardware in 5-8 launches. Fuel cost should be negligible -- ballpark it at $50k/launch? So, it's just a question of maintenance/refurbishment costs and launch costs.

I could see this at least breaking even.

Also this is really only barely into the 60mi/100km height of accepted space. It'll be awesome for sure, but space-station-esque views people might expect will be lacking. I doubt you'll even orbit the planet once. It'll be a ballistic up and down shot.

Still cheaper than chartering some mega yachts for a week. The difficult decisions these rich people have to make...

Sending the 1% into space at a loss because you can't figure out what else to do with the money. America!
Saying you wouldn't want an opportunity? I would hate it, even after plenty of international flights I still don't trust the pilot or mechanics on that A330 or 777... and there isn't pulling over.

You are hoping death upon those that are better to do than you are? Sad really.

That's what one side on the political spectrum believes these days. Because if they killed the rich, they think their lives would improve.

But wait, I thought the rich were the job creators? What is it, what is it!? ;)

Yeah, last time I heard the poor weren't building hospitals or schools.

$200K is pretty steep. I wonder how well this "Space Capsule" will deal with Solar radiation?

It only even touches the boundary of space. The ISS is somewhere like 3-4x as high up. No worries there.

You're the one thinking about death for people. I'm thinking about people staying in space. Big difference.
Lol! What an asinine defense! Congrats tho for the most obvious asinine defense while trying to backtrack twisting words award!! Wtf is wrong with people?

You have no sense of humor, do you? Sheesh.
