New trademarks discovered by fan blog Japanese Nintendo suggest a GameCube Classic could be on the way. While Nintendo recently revealed that GameCube controller support would be coming to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, these are multiple trademarks, all of which “specifically pertain to video game software and video game machines.”

Unsurprisingly, the news of the trademarks has sent rumors flying in the Nintendo fan community. One popular theory is that Nintendo is preparing a GameCube Classic Edition for release. Like the company did with the NES Classic and SNES Classic Edition consoles, Nintendo could potentially release a miniaturized GameCube with a selection of much-loved games.

What the GC over the N64? The GC was one of their worst performing systems.

The GC was already a pretty cute system, so making it even smaller would be unbearably cute.

You've got to imagine they'd still put out a mini-N64 before a mini-GC.

Ohh great and I guess a Wii classic after that? I think they're milking nostalgia a bit.

I understand they likely won't get the license to do goldeneye64 or perfect dark but the game cube was a joke.

Just stop after the snes then

They think they have a cash cow now with these mini releases. A N64 one can still be good but proabably can forget anything past that. Licenses for newer games proabably will cost to much for them. Honestly after the SNES Nintendo's 3rd party support has been greatly lacking.

Wait, wait, wait. After the snes they had 3rd party support? ;)

Not only that nes and snes games hold up ok for what they are worth. Once you get to N64 and GC they will look like shit and won’t hold up without the games being remastered.

Pretty dumb. Everyone still has a wii somewhere. Just release GC controllers and the games again.

Yeah. I know the N64 actually sold pretty poorly compared to the PS1, but it was very iconic. It had some very defining video games like Mario 64, Star Fox 64, Golden Eye, and more. Game Cube is old, but not that old. System was still in production 11 years ago. N64 is a lot more "retro" like and worthy of a classic system. Otherwise IMO you're getting so close that it is better to remaster and release on a new console.

Emulators already do N64 well, but getting an official licensed controller would be cool. For those that want the experience and cool factor a new N64 would be cool. Game Cube? Meh.

I never got into Nintendo stuff when it was new. I'm an old fart that does like retro-gaming. I'm curious on the GameCube.
I do remember when it was being sold. I believe I was using a Pentium or maybe Pentium 2 processor at the time. Beyond a brief memory, I don't know anything about this device at all.

How about a DreamCast reboot? I did own one of these and had a few games my buddies used to play. Shame this device didn't last...

Step 1: Buy a Wii
Step 2: Buy gamecube games
Step 3: ?????
Step 4: You now have a NES/SNES/Gamecube "classic" & Wii

Wouldn't mind if they just made a retro hub instead. Network downloads with access to NES/SNES/N64/Gamecube/(Wii but meh..) with the option of running the games at wider aspect ratio, resolution, refresh rate perhaps include an official workshop of some kind.

But the chances of that happening..

You could say that about either of the classic consoles. Thing is, buying a GC classic will be MUCH cheaper than buying a Wii + individual Gamecube games. Retro game prices have gotten a bit nuts the last few years, especially for some of the really big games. Also, you can't get virtual console games on the Wii anymore, Nintendo closed the Wii eShop.

Mario Sunshine was pretty good. I enjoyed it, anyway.

We also had:

Pikmin 1 & 2
Eternal Darkness
Metroid Prime 1 & 2
Zelda: Wind Waker
Mario Kart: Double Dash
Smash Bros. Melee
Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door
Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles
Adding Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes to that list

Just feel like they could have done so much more with that hardware. *shrugs*

N64 is a terrible system. At least 90% of the games haven't aged that well. It's only popular was it was because of the first 3D Mario and Goldeneye.

I'll take a cute mini GC.

Luigi's Manson was a great game.
Zelda: Twilight Princess
Viewtiful Joe

Rogue Squadron 2 was a launch title and a lot of fun.
And it was an awesome looking game for it's time.

Luigi's Manson was a great game.
Zelda: Twilight Princess
Viewtiful Joe
I played Viewtiful Joe for the first time in a LOOOOOOOOONG time and played it on Adult mode in front of the kids. The first thngs the kids saw was the billboard with the naked lady...

I didn't count Twilight Princess because it was cross-platform, but yeah, totally. Viewtiful Joe was awesome, I own both of them on the GC. Didn't play Luigi's Mansion but it looked good.

I included it because the forced Wii-mote controls are terrible on Wii's Zelda: TP. I'll take the GC version even if it doesn't have widescreen.

Fair enough, I was just trying to avoid the "it's not really a GC game because it came out on the Wii" argument that seems to inevitably happen. ;)

Maybe, but it had the best library, in my opinion. Gamecube is my favorite console of all time because of its library.

The Gamecube had a custom PowerPC CPU and AMD GPU that made it the most powerful console at the time. Its combined power was about 13 GFLOP/s compared to the PS2's 6 and the Xbox's 9. It was also notable that it was the first console to fully support 480p at launch, which Nintendo unfortunately took away with the first revision of the console. Consoles with the digital A/V output are a hot commodity, along with the hard-to-find component cable.

The Gamecube version of Twilight Princess was superior to the Wii version in both graphics and having Link still be left handed. Still salty that they think having the sword in Link's left had is an impediment for players swinging the Nunchuk with their right hand. And they did it the cheap way by mirroring the entire game instead of just doing it to Link. Link has been right handed ever since.

There were also other classic RPGs exclusive to the Gamecube at the time like Tales of Symphonia and Baten Kaitos. Resident Evil Zero and Resident Evil 4 were also exclusive to the platform. It was also the first to bring over the classic SHMUP Ikaruga.

Aside from that, many multiplatform titles were best on the Gamecube due to its superior hardware compared to the Xbox and PlayStation 2. X-Men: Legends, Spider-Man 2, and Medal of Honor: Rising Sun come to mind.

Twilight Princess was developed for the Gamecube, though. But Nintendo wanted it for the Wii launch, so they held it back and didn't print as many copies. As I mention above, it's notable that the Wii version is mirrored to the Gamecube version due to the misconception that people swinging the controller with their right hand needed the character they're controlling to also be right handed.

I agree but it has far more Nostalgia to people then the GC ever had.

I get that. I know people who would get it just to have it and never even plug it up. I'll just be lucky to come up with 5 games that I'd want to play on the N64 and I mean really want to play.

Does Nintendo even have any right to Rare games? MS owns the company now.

Pretty sure MS owns all the rights.

Pretty sure MS owns all the rights.

They own most of the rights. Anything that was Nintendo property such as Donkey Kong and Star Fox stuck with Nintendo. Nintendo did not actually own Rare 100%, they owned about 49% of the company. So Rare was still only ever a 2nd party developer who was making games for Nintendo, so they wouldn't have owned any rights to those characters to keep those games. Most of the other games though would have went with them to MS, which were already all released as part of the Rare reply bundle that had like 30 of their games. Which is where I released they were around longer than I had though as didn't realize as a kid that snake-rattle and roll was a Rare game.

If I'm not mistaken, Nintendo are the ones who put a stop to the Xbox 360 remake of GoldenEye 007. Supposedly NOA put together the publishing deal with Microsoft, but the corporate office in Japan didn't like the idea and killed it.

..snip...

You don't say? I've got the HD component cable as I wanted the best output on my then-new 1080i (not 'p'!) rear-projection TV. The damned thing must have shipped from Japan as it took bloody forever to arrive. Between that and the surround sound it made Rogue Squadron really fun (and my wife nauseous when jinking:angelic:) Might be time to dust it off and play some retro-games!
